Al Gharafa and Al Rayyan secure spots in Amir Cup 2025 semifinals
On 14 May 2025, the final set of quarterfinal matches took place. Al Gharafa faced Al Sadd at Al Thumama Stadium, while Al Rayyan took on Al Duhail at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium.
Al Gharafa vs Al Sadd
Al Gharafa has advanced to the semi-finals of the 2025 Amir Cup after defeating Al Sadd, the defending champions, 5-4 on penalties, following a 2-2 draw in both regular and extra time. The quarter-final match was held on 14 May 2025 at Al Thumama Stadium.
Al Gharafa will now face Umm Salal in the semi-final. Umm Salal had also advanced after beating Al-Shamal on penalties (3-2) yesterday, following a 1-1 draw in regulation and extra time.
For Al Gharafa, Joselu (Spain) and Yacine Brahimi (Algeria) both scored from the penalty spot in the 45+2 and 53rd minutes. Al Sadd's goals came from an own goal by Al-Gharafa defender Aron Gunnarsson (Iceland) in the 67th minute and a last-gasp equalizer by Boualem Khoukhi in the 90+9th minute.
The match began with both sides exchanging attacking opportunities. Al Gharafa's Brahimi fired a powerful shot in the 6th minute that was saved by the goalkeeper, and Al Sadd responded with a long-range effort from Claudinho that went over the bar in the 11th.
Joselu nearly scored with a header from a Brahimi cross in the 15th minute, but shortly after, the match was interrupted for about 25 minutes due to a technical issue, resulting in a long stretch of stoppage time.
After play resumed, Al Gharafa dominated possession. Rodrigo Moreno had a header go over the bar in the 36th minute, and Joselu had a strong shot blocked in the 41st. A handball by Brazilian defender Paulo Otavio gave Al Gharafa a penalty, which Joselu converted in the 45+2 minute, putting his side ahead.
Joselu nearly doubled the lead after receiving another pass from Brahimi, but his shot narrowly missed the post in the 45+10 minute.
Al Sadd responded strongly, and Youcef Atal nearly equalized with a powerful shot, but Khalifa Abubakr, Al-Gharafa's goalkeeper, made an impressive save in the 45+16 minute, preserving the 1-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Al Sadd pressed forward while Al Gharafa relied on a structured defense and swift counterattacks. This led to another penalty after Otأ،vio once again handled the ball in the box. Brahimi calmly converted in the 53rd minute to make it 2-0.
Al Sadd missed a key chance to reduce the deficit when Claudinho’s shot was spilled by the keeper, and Rafa Mujica missed the rebound from close range in the 58th minute.
Al Sadd finally pulled one back when Claudinho's free kick was inadvertently deflected into his own net by Gunnarsson in the 67th minute.
With momentum on their side, Al Sadd pushed for an equalizer. Akram Afif came close in the 72nd minute, firing just over the crossbar, and a header from Mohamed Kamara missed narrowly in the 80th.
Al Gharafa still threatened on the counter, and Ahmed Al-Janahi missed a golden opportunity in the 84th minute after going one-on-one with the keeper but shooting too weakly.
Gunnarsson redeemed himself by clearing the ball off the line in the 90+2 minute, denying Rafa Mujica a certain goal. But in the 90+9 minute, Al Sadd finally equalized when Hassan Al-Haydos sent in a cross that Boualem Khoukhi headed into the net, forcing extra time with the score tied 2-2.
Despite Al Sadd's superiority in extra time, Al Gharafa held firm defensively, and the match went to penalties. Al Gharafa emerged victorious 5-4, securing their place in the semi-finals.

Arsenal in talks over Partey deal as Jorginho and Tierney depart
LondoncTypeface:> Arsenal remain in discussions with Thomas Partey over a new contract but have confirmed the expected exits of Jorginho and Kieran Tierney. Partey's contract is set to expire on June 30, and the defensive midfielder has been linked with Barcelona and Juventus. The news on Partey's future came in an update shared by the Premier League runners-up thanking the out-of-contract men's and women's players who will be leaving the club at the end of the month. Italy midfielder Jorginho, who is expected to join Brazilian outfit Flamengo, had already confirmed his exit in a farewell video posted to his Instagram last week, while Tierney is returning to former club Celtic. The Scotland left-back, who featured 144 times for Arsenal, told the club website: 'Just thank you for everything from day one. They supported us through the good times and the bad, and they supported me through some hard times as well. 'I feel so lucky that I've played for this club and the love that the supporters have given me has been amazing. I've loved every day here and I've learned so much, I've improved so much and I just feel very lucky.' (PA Media/dpa)

Man Utd close in on Cunha after meeting Wolves release clause
PA Media/dpa London Manchester United have been granted permission by Wolves to finalize a deal to sign Matheus Cunha, the PA news agency understands. The 26-year-old has been a key target for the Red Devils as Ruben Amorim looks to reshape the team on the back of the club's worst season in 51 years. United had sought to negotiate with Wolves over the terms of Cunha's deal but have now met the Brazil international's £62.5 million ($84.5 million) release clause and been given permission to start a medical. The forward thanked Wolves fans after the 'best season' of his life in an Instagram post, having scored 17 times in all competitions and equalled the record for the most goals by a Brazilian in a Premier League campaign with 15. Cunha celebrated turned 26 on Tuesday, when his birthday will have been made all the sweeter by that evening's development. It will be welcome news to United boss Amorim when he wakes up in Kuala Lumpur, where the club play a friendly on Wednesday before playing another game in Hong Kong two days later as part of a money-spinning post-season tour. Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo and Ipswich striker Liam Delap are among other players of interest to United, but business has been made harder by the fact they failed to qualify for the Champions League, worth an estimated £100 million. Amorim said in Malaysia on Tuesday: 'Omar (Berrada, chief executive) can explain (the ramifications) better than me, but I think we always prepared two plans - one with Champions League, one without Champions League. 'Without Champions League, we also don't need a big squad. We can control the squad in a better way. 'Then we have a plan that is to bring some new players, of course, but our big plan is to improve the team that we have, it's to improve our academy because I think that is the future. It was the past, so it can be the future. 'It's not going to change so much because we have the fair play financial rules. We are not allowed to do much in this summer, even with Champions League, so we are prepared for that. 'Important thing is to stick together, like I said on Sunday. We are going to struggle, it's not going to be everything right away, but I have the feeling and I see the team improving, so that is the most important thing.' As United look to make summer improvements within their financial restrictions, Amorim stressed the importance of keeping key building block Bruno Fernandes. The 30-year-old was a rare shining light in United's worst league season since suffering relegation in 1973-74, which was compounded by last week's Europa League final loss to fellow strugglers Tottenham. Fernandes admitted the club could end up cashing in on him after that loss cost them Champions League football, with Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia keen to sign the Portugal international. 'You can see by the performance, you can see by the leadership, the passion that he has for the game, so he's really important,' Amorim said. 'You could see that in the last game (Sunday's 2-0 win against Aston Villa). I felt that the team was without pressure and they performed quite well, everybody wants the ball. 'But we had some difficult moments and in those difficult moments you can see that Bruno is the guy that takes that responsibility. 'He should be because he's the captain, he's experienced, so he's really important for us, and really important for what we want to build with this team.'
