Top-seed Southern Miss avoids elimination with 6-5 victory over Alabama in Hattiesburg Regional

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) — Nick Monistere led off the eighth inning with his second home run and Tucker Stockman delivered a two-out, two-run single to rally Southern Mississippi to a 6-5 victory over Alabama on Saturday in an elimination game of the Hattiesburg Regional.
Top-seeded host Southern Miss (45-15) will play the loser of the nightcap between No. 4 seed Columbia and the third-seeded Miami Hurricanes in a Sunday elimination game.
The Golden Eagles rallied after Bryce Fowler's two-out two-run homer in the seventh gave No. 2 seed Alabama (41-18) a 5-3 lead. Fowler went 3 for 5 from the leadoff spot.
Will Plattner homered off Southern Miss starter JB Middleton in the third to put Alabama up 1-0. Monistere answered in the bottom of the inning with a two-out two-run shot to give the Golden Eagles the lead.
Will Hodo hit a two-run homer in the fourth to put the Crimson Tide up 3-2. Ben Higdon homered leading off the bottom of the inning to tie it for Southern Miss.
Middleton allowed five runs on seven hits in seven innings with eight strikeouts. Colby Allen (7-4) allowed two hits and three walks in two scoreless innings for the win.
Crimson Tide starter Tyler Fay allowed three runs on six hits in six innings. Braylon Myers was tagged for a run in the seventh. Carson Ozmer (4-2), who came in after Monistere's leadoff homer in the eighth, allowed two runs on a hit and two walks in one inning.

Associated Press CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Blackhawks have hired Mike Vellucci as an assistant coach for Jeff Blashill's first staff with his new team. The Blackhawks announced the addition of Vellucci on Monday. He joins Michael Peca and Anders Sorensen as Blashill's assistants. Goaltending coach Jimmy Waite, video coach Matt Meacham and assistant video coach Adam Gill round out the staff. Vellucci, 58, spent the previous five seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He was an assistant general manager and director of hockey operations for the Carolina Hurricanes from 2014-19. Vellucci also was an assistant coach for the U.S. when it won the world championship last month. Blackhawks forward Frank Nazar and defenseman Alex Vlasic were part of the winning American team. 'Serving as an assistant coach at the world championship this summer and winning a gold medal for our country alongside Frank Nazar and Alex Vlasic will bring such valuable experience to this group," Blashill said in a release. "That kind of championship-caliber background only makes our team better and I'm excited to get to work.' Blashill, 51, took over as Chicago's head coach last month. From May 29 to June 22, it is a quiet period, meaning in-person recruiting contacts are permitted if they occur on the team's campus. UGA head coach Kirby Smart is reportedly using every tactic at his disposal in the pursuit of five-star wide receiver Cederian Morgan. The country's No. 15 player and No. 2 wide receiver, per On3, has been considered an Alabama lean. But Georgia has been trying to shift his recruitment in their favor, according to DawgsHQ's Rusty Mansell. Georgia wide receiver coach James Coley has been making a lot of visits with Morgan this offseason.
