Scottish town with unique attractions named country's top spot for family travel
Falkirk has been named Scotland's top family destination in a new LNER study of 71 UK towns and cities
Falkirk has been named the best place to visit in Scotland for families, topping a new league table compiled by rail operator LNER. The central belt town clinched the top spot based on its unbeatable offering of kid-friendly activities, green spaces and family-focused accommodation.
The research, which examined 71 towns and cities across Scotland and England, analysed destinations across five categories: family-friendliness, sustainability, culture, outdoor experiences and food.
Each location was scored out of 100, with data drawn from sources such as the Office for National Statistics, Yelp, and Hotels.com. All figures were adjusted for population and weighted to ensure a fair comparison.
Falkirk outshone other Scottish destinations for families thanks to an impressive 511 kid-friendly activities, more per capita than anywhere else in the country.
The town is also home to 11 public parks and themed attractions, giving it one of the highest concentrations of green space designed with families in mind.
Accommodation options scored highly too, with Falkirk boasting 159 family-friendly hotels per 100,000 people, the top result in Scotland.
Dining out is also made easier, with a wide selection of child-friendly restaurants available for visiting families.
David Flesher, Commercial Director at LNER, said: 'When you're choosing where to go, it's not always easy to know what a city is really best at, especially if you're trying to plan something special. This research helps take out the guesswork and shows what different places have to offer.
'We hope this guide helps people make more informed choices, whether they're planning a day trip or a longer summer break. There are so many brilliant destinations on our route, and this is just one more way to celebrate them.'
The study also spotlighted standout destinations in other travel categories across Scotland. Aberdeen was recognised as the country's most sustainable destination.
The coastal city earned praise for its clean air, ranking lowest for air pollution, and a high number of second-hand shops per capita. It also boasts walkable streets and a compact layout ideal for low-impact tourism.
Stirling, meanwhile, was hailed as Scotland's cultural gem.

Despite its small size, it punches well above its weight in cultural offerings, with a high number of museums, bookshops, historic sites and events.
Nature lovers were pointed toward Inverness, which was named Scotland's best outdoor destination. Nestled between the Highlands and the famous Loch Ness, the city offers hiking, wildlife spotting, and even dolphin sightings in the nearby Moray Firth.
And when it comes to food, it was no surprise that Edinburgh topped the charts.
The capital was praised for its vibrant culinary scene, including the highest number of Michelin-starred restaurants in Scotland and recognition from the Good Food Guide as the 'Most Exciting Food Destination of 2025'.

A statement from easyJet reads: "We can confirm that flight EZY2902 from Paphos to Bristol diverted to Izmir due to a technical issue which resulted in a smoke smell onboard. "The aircraft landed safely in Izmir and was met by emergency services as a routine and precautionary measure only. "All passengers disembarked as normal into the terminal and were provided with hotel accommodation and meals where required. "Passengers will continue to Bristol on a replacement aircraft later today. "The safety of our customers and crew is easyJet's highest priority and easyJet operates its fleet of aircraft in strict compliance with all manufacturers' guidelines. "We would like to thank customers for their understanding and apologise for the inconvenience caused.' The mid-air drama comes after 270 were confirmed dead in the terrifying Air India crash in Ahmedabad, India. The plane failed to gain altitude after takeoff and crashed into a densely populated part of the city. A heartbreaking vigil was held in London today to honour the victims – including two young sisters now orphaned after their father died in the crash while on a pilgrimage to scatter his late wife's ashes. The airline confirmed that 241 of the 242 people on board sadly died in the horrifying crash near Ahmedabad Airport in western India on Thursday - and today hospital officials vastly increased that toll. More names of those who tragically died have emerged. British passenger Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, 40, was the sole survivor - and has told of how he watched people near him die in front of his eyes.

Kenny Logan leads celebrity team on 555-mile Ireland cycle in memory of Doddie Weir
A team of celebrities and rugby players are preparing for a 555-mile cycle challenge around the island of Ireland to raise funds for research into motor neurone disease (MND) in memory of the late Doddie Weir. Weir died of MND aged 52 in November 2022, after years of campaigning to raise awareness of the condition and funds into research. Scottish rugby legend Kenny Logan and his television presenter wife Gabby are among those preparing to take part in Doddie'5 Lions Challenge, cycling around 100 miles a day for six days, departing from Belfast on Sunday. The team will cycle through counties including Galway, Limerick and Cork, to arrive in Dublin on June 20 and deliver the match ball to the Aviva Stadium for the British and Irish Lions' 1888 Cup clash with Argentina. Some participants have had to pull out due to injury, including Weir's son Hamish, who will instead drive a support vehicle, while Scotland rugby stars Bryan Redpath and Hugo Southwell, and ex-Lions and Ireland international Rob Henderson, will also no longer be able to take part. Football legend Ally McCoist, actor Jamie Bamber, former Harlequins player Mel Deane, and cancer campaigner Iain Ward will all take part alongside the Logans. The challenge has raised more than £300,000 for My Name'5 Doddie Foundation and the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association so far, with hopes of reaching £500,000 before Sunday. Kenny Logan will lead the team, and he has been doing intensive hill sessions on an exercise bike twice a week ahead of his second endurance fundraiser for MND research. He joined the Edinburgh to Paris cycle in 2023 which raised almost £1 million. He said: 'We've lost a few to injury, and it just shows how demanding this is going to be. I've had my own aches and pains. No major injuries thankfully but I've definitely been reminded why I probably shouldn't be moving this much at my age. 'I'm most nervous about the hills. I convinced myself Ireland was flat – it's definitely not. But nerves are good. I've always had them before a big challenge. 'The support's been incredible. We've still got time to push, and every penny counts. 'Since Doddie died, awareness has grown massively – but we still need to fund research. The foundation has committed nearly £20 million already, which is phenomenal, but it's only the beginning. 'Doddie would be proud – but he'd be telling us to go further and faster. That's why we're doing this.' He joked that McCoist needed some help with bike maintenance. Logan said: 'Ally's been out and about, but his bike broke down the other day. I told him not to trust himself to check the batteries on his fancy gears – someone else needs to do that for him.'
