Long Island swimmer ‘most likely' bitten by shark at popular beach: authorities
A 20-year-old woman was 'most likely' bit by a juvenile shark at a popular Long Island beach while trying to beat the blistering heat this week, park officials revealed on Friday.
The swimmer was wading in waist deep water at the Central Mall beachfront at Jones Beach State Park on Wednesday when something chomped on her foot and leg just after 4 p.m., according to a release from Parks, Recreation and Historic preservation.
The woman couldn't see what attacked her, but parks officials determined it was most likely a juvenile sand tiger shark, according to an investigation from the Department of Environmental Conservation.

The 20-year-old woman was waist-deep at the Central Mall beachfront when she was bitten by something that officials believe is a juvenile shark.

Lifeguards sprung into action and treated the woman who suffered minor, non-life-threatening lacerations to her lower extremity and was treated at Nassau County University Medical Center Hospital.
Swimming was shut down at Central Mall following the presumptive shark bite, but resumed Thursday morning.

Park officials suggest the best way to avoid shark encounters is to keep out of the water at night, steer clear of murky water, stay away from appetizing schools of fish, and always follow instructions of lifeguards.
The toothsome aquatic terrors have been spotted several times as folks make their seasonal return to Atlantic Coast beaches.
Sharks have been sighted at several locations across the Atlantic Coast since the summer weather started to turn.

The prosecution claimed the rapper transported both women across state lines and then forced them to have sex with male escorts while he watched. 'On cross-examination, both Cassie and Jane admitted to willingly participating in some of the 'freak offs,' which could cause the jurors to wonder if all of the romantic encounters may have been consensual,' Faddis noted. 'Both Cassie and Jane admitted to voluntarily ingesting drugs before the 'freak offs,' which may undercut the prosecution's coercion argument.' The criminal defense attorney did note that Cassie and Jane both gave 'compelling, evocative testimony detailing physical abuse and financial coercion.'

Ukrainian F-16 pilot killed defending against biggest Russian barrage yet: ‘He died like a hero'
A Ukrainian Air Force pilot flying an American-made F-16 jet was shot out of the sky overnight as he defended his nation from the largest Russian drone and missile barrage of the war so far. Lt. Col. Maksym Ustimenko, 31, took off early Sunday after Russia fired a record 537 aerial weapons, including 477 drones and 60 missiles, Ukraine's air force said. Ustimenko was able to intercept seven targets before his F-16 Falcon was struck, leaving him with no time to eject, but just enough to aim the jet away from a residential area, officials said. This is the third F-16 to be downed since Ukraine took delivery of the warplanes in February. One jet was shot down last month, and another in April 2024 when repelling major Russian airstrikes. As least 35,000 Ukrainian children are believed to be missing – abducted by Russian troops and forced into indoctrination programs since the start of the Kremlin's brutal three-year invasion. The children all had the misfortune to live behind what are now Russian lines — the regions of Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson in the southeast of Ukraine. 7 These children from an orphanage in the Donetsk region of Ukraine were brought to a camp in Russia.
