India urges Iran and Israel to avoid escalation, emphasises dialogue and diplomacy
New Delhi [India], June 13 (ANI): India on Friday expressed deep concern over the recent developments between Iran and Israel and called for restraint from both sides, according to a statement by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
'We are deeply concerned at the recent developments between Iran and Israel,' the MEA said.
The ministry added, 'We are closely monitoring the evolving situation, including reports related to attacks on nuclear sites.'
India urged both countries to avoid escalation and instead use established diplomatic channels.
'India urges both sides to avoid any escalatory steps. Existing channels of dialogue and diplomacy should be utilised to work towards a de-escalation of the situation and resolving underlying issues. India enjoys close and friendly relations with both the countries and stands ready to extend all possible support,' the statement noted.
'Our Missions in both countries are in contact with the Indian community. All Indian nationals in the region are advised to exercise caution, stay safe and follow local security advisories,' the MEA added.
The statement comes as Israel launched a preemptive strike against Iran on Friday, according to Israel Defence Minister Israel Katz, The Times of Israel reported.
Katz declared an emergency situation across the country due to Israel's action in Iran.
'Following the State of Israel's preemptive strike against Iran, a missile and drone attack against the State of Israel and its civilian population is expected in the immediate future,' The Times of Israel quoted Katz as saying.
Katz said that he signed 'a special order, according to which a special state of emergency will be imposed in the home front throughout the entire State of Israel.'
'You must obey the instructions of the Home Front Command and the authorities and remain in the protected areas,' Katz added, as per The Times of Israel.
Sirens wailed across Israel as the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened his security cabinet, as Israel began the airstrikes.
As per the Times of Israel, the IDF Home Front Command clarified that the sirens that wailed across Israel were intended to convey to Israelis that the country is entering 'a new situation,' the Home Front Command's Tzvika Tessler clarified. There has been no attack launched at Israel at this time, he said.
Tessler said that, in the coming few hours, Israel could experience 'a significant attack from the east.'
These could be 'heavy missiles' that could reach anywhere in the country. 'We will give far-reaching warnings,' he said.
The IDF confirmed that it launched an aerial campaign against Iran's nuclear program, as per the Times of Israel.
Dozens of targets across Iran related to the nuclear programme and other military facilities are being struck by the Israeli Air Force, it said. The operation is dubbed 'Nation of Lions.'
The IDF said that Iran has enough enriched uranium to build several bombs within days, and it needs to act against this 'imminent threat.'
Sirens that sounded across Israel a short while ago were a preemptive warning issued by the IDF, ahead of a possible reaction by Iran. (ANI)

Alcohol industry asks Maharashtra govt to rethink excise duty hike, calls for deliberations
Expressing concern over the increase in the excise duty on Indian made foreign liquor (IMFL) by up to 50 per cent by the Maharashtra government, the Confederation of Indian Alcoholic Beverage Companies (CIABC), the apex body of the Indian Alcoholic Beverage Industry, has urged the state government to reconsider the hike and hold deliberations with all stakeholders immediately. Sources in the excise department said the industry body was trying to protect its interest, but declined to comment on any possibility of a rollback. The state cabinet on Tuesday approved a hike in excise duty on IMFL, country liquor, and imported alcohol. The decision is expected to raise the state's annual excise collection by approximately Rs 14,000 crore as the prices of IMFL and premium foreign liquor brands are likely to increase by 50-80 per cent. The CIABC claimed that while the intent behind the proposed hike may be to enhance revenue collections by Rs 14,000 crore, the actual outcome may be contrary–driven by declining sales, rising illicit trade, and border leakages. The long-term impact could be deeply detrimental, not only for industry and employment, but also for public safety and overall state revenues. Stating that the CIABC had already written to the Maharashtra government urging it to start a consultative process with all stakeholders before releasing any final gazette notification, Anant S Iyer, Director-General, CIABC, said the hike in excise duty was projected to push maximum retail prices up by as much as 85 per cent, a step that could severely disrupt the market, erode the competitiveness of national brands, and jeopardise the availability of legitimate alcoholic beverages in the state. 'Such an unprecedented escalation in duties poses a serious deterrence to consumer access of established and reputed brands, compelling a shift toward lower-category products. This poses a serious threat to the stability of the IMFL industry in the state…such a move will have a far-reaching adverse impact,' Iyer said. He warned that higher MRPs often create a vacuum filled by illegal operators. The IMFL industry contributes approximately 60 per cent of the total excise revenue of the state.

'Israel's attack completely caught the leadership by surprise, especially the killing of the top military figures and nuclear scientists," said Hamid Hosseini, a member of Iran's Chamber of Commerce's energy committee, in a phone call with the NYT from Iran. 'It also exposed our lack of proper air defense and their ability to bombard our critical sites and military bases with no resistance," he added. Hosseini confessed that the Iranian officials were shocked by Israel's ability to infiltrate Iran's military and security apparatus. What Did Khamenei Say On Attack? The report also mentioned two Iranian officials who were aware of the discussions that took place after the attacks, led by Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In those talks, Khamenei said he wanted revenge against Israel but didn't want to rush into action. According to the officials, there were disagreements among Iran's leadership about how to respond. Some were concerned about whether Iran could handle a long war with Israel, especially if the US got involved and given the damage Israel had already done to Iran's missile systems and defense capabilities. An official at the meeting reportedly said that if Israel launched an attack on Iran's energy or water infrastructure, it may lead to riots in the country. An IRGC member who was informed about the meeting told The NYT that the officials realised Ayatollah Khamenei was facing a tough choice: either go for an all-out war, which could put his decades-long rule at risk, or pull back, which would be seen as a sign of defeat both inside Iran and on the global stage.
