London park festivals to go ahead as planned after court ruling, organisers say
None of the several planned music festivals due to take place in a London park will be cancelled following a High Court ruling over planning permission, a spokesperson for the events has said.
Brockwell Park in Lambeth hosts a series of events called Brockwell Live, attracting hundreds of thousands of people to six festivals, including Mighty Hoopla, with artists including Kesha and former Little Mix singer Jade Thirlwall due to perform this year.
Last week, Rebekah Shaman, a resident in the area and a member of the Protect Brockwell Park group, successfully brought legal action against Lambeth Council over the use of parts of the park for the festivals, which this year are due to begin on May 23.
In a ruling on Friday, Mr Justice Mould said that the authority's decision to certify the planned use of the land as lawful was 'irrational'.
Lawyers for Ms Shaman and the Protect Brockwell Park group wrote to the council following the ruling, asking it to 'confirm that the event has been cancelled' and to clear any fencing or infrastructure, and stating that Brockwell Live did not have planning permission.
But on Monday, a spokesperson for Brockwell Live said that no events would be cancelled, with Lambeth Council confirming that the event's organisers, Summer Events Limited, had reapplied for planning permission.
The Brockwell Live spokesperson said: 'Brockwell Live can confirm that all events in the series will go ahead as planned, including the Lambeth Country Show.
'Friday's High Court ruling dealt with a particular point of law and whether an administrative process had been carried out correctly.
'We wish to make it clear that no event will be cancelled as a result of the High Court's decision.
'We take our stewardship of Brockwell Park seriously. As we prepare to deliver these much-loved, culturally significant events, we remain fully committed to its care, upkeep, and long-term wellbeing.
'With set-up nearly complete, we look forward to opening the gates and welcoming festival-goers later this week.'
Lambeth Council said: 'Summer Events Limited has applied to Lambeth Council for a new certificate of lawfulness, for 24 days, following the High Court ruling last week on the previous certificate.
'The council is urgently considering that application. That consideration does not stop the events proceeding.'
Before the hearing last week, Protect Brockwell Park said they are 'not anti-festival, we support well-run inclusive events', but that the festivals cause damage, including to the grassland and trees.
Mr Justice Mould said that his decision was only about 'the lawfulness of the decision to grant the certificate', after previously telling lawyers that 'what is happening on the ground' would be a question for Lambeth Council as the planning authority to decide.
Lawyers for the council and Summer Events Limited both asked the judge for the go-ahead to challenge his decision, but this was refused.
The council and organisers can still ask the Court of Appeal for permission to challenge the decision directly.
The ruling was welcomed by Protect Brockwell Park campaigners as well as Dunkirk actor Sir Mark Rylance, who said in a statement issued by the group that it was 'wonderful news' and that 'every small victory for nature makes a difference'.

Kitty Scott-Claus, who appeared in the third series of RuPaul's Drag Race UK, has lost eight pounds after making some radical lifestyle changes Pride month is in full swing, and drag queens, the so-called 'ambassadors' of the LGBTQIA+ community, are already busy entertaining crowds. In fact, today, I'm sitting with Kitty Scott-Claus who has just spent the weekend 'shouting in a mic' at Mighty Hoopla. 'I love to be the loudest person in the room,' Kitty jokes. She adds: "It's so annoying, I hate myself.' Being an entertainer is just one of the many hats Kitty wears. She was a finalist on 2022's Celebrity MasterChef and is now gearing up for a return to the West End this summer with her upcoming role in The Diana Mixtape, embodying once again Lady Di, a character with which she won the notably difficult 'snatch game' challenge on RuPaul's Drag Race. With her honest humour and infectious charisma, it didn't take long for Kitty to earn her place as one of the UK's most beloved Drag Queens. But her journey started from 'real humble beginnings', she reveals. Kitty says: 'I feel like, especially this year, this pride month, I feel so reflective of my journey, and how far I've come, and thinking 'oh my god' from where I started. 'I started doing drag at a bar in Camden and we were playing to like three people.' Kitty has since put her Bachelor's Degree from the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, in musical theater to good use. Keeping herself booked and busy, the media personality has not tired yet from the wigs and make up. 'Drag gives you the opportunity to be beautiful on the days where you don't necessarily feel beautiful,' she reveals. She further shares: 'Drag for me, I feel like I'm Barbie and I feel like it doesn't matter what the situation is, I just put on the outfit, and then I become that thing. So when I was in Masterchef, I put on my Masterchef's outfit, I feel like it's a good analogy for life.' And while many drag artists keep their art completely separate from their real lives, Kitty embodies her real personality in and out of her work attire. 'I don't really have a drag persona, I'm the same in drag or out of drag, it doesn't matter if I've got a wig on or not, I'm always going to be an attention seeker,' she says. Nevertheless, Kitty also enjoys being able to enter public spaces as herself, or rather, himself - Louie Westwood, even though 'the gays know'. She explains: 'It's fabulous, because you get to do that double life thing. 'In the words of Hannah Montana, you get the best of both worlds.' While being confident and admitting to always being happy with their appearance, Kitty also acknowledges the pressure of being scrutinised by TV views. But that wasn't the motivation for Kitty to lose an impressive eight stone. She recalls: 'I was so happy with the size I was and I never thought, because I'd grown up being a bigger individual, I'd grown up being plus size, I never thought in a million years I could be the size I am now, that just never crossed my mind. 'I'd grown up being bigger, I just didn't think that it was possible.' Upon starting working out with a personal trainer suggested by her Drag Race castmate, Ella Vaday, Kitty got a taste for a healthier lifestyle. Kitty further shared her weight loss journey, revealing how she achieved her transformation: 'The biggest thing for me was finding an exercise routine that works for you and that you enjoy. I think if you enjoy it, you don't feel like 'all right, I've got go and work out now'.' The drag artist admitted that going to the gym has become her 'zen time', a place where she can be by herself and listen to her music. In addition to the gym, Kitty also goes swimming. 'I really love swimming and that's completely disconnected from everything, I don't have a phone, I don't have music with me, I don't have any distractions,' Kitty says. 'It's me and the pool.' Diet and making radical changes to her lifestyle have also contributed to Kitty's transformation. She further debunked rumours accusing her of relying on diabetes medications that have been made popular by celebrities in recent years. 'A lot of it is diet, and I feel like especially losing weight in 2025, the world is so hot on Ozempic and Mounjaro, and everyone is so quick to say you've just done Ozempic, you're in the public eye, you have a blue tick, this is how you've done it,' Kitty admits. 'And it's like no, I'm in the gym every single day, and I love it, and I've changed my diet, I don't drink anymore, I'm sober.' She adds: 'Completely 180 of what my life was and I'm eight stone down and I've never been happier. I've never felt more confident.' Running is another activity Kitty 'absolutely loves' doing. In fact, she loved it so much, she ran this year's London Marathon, dedicating the 26.2 mile race to the late The Vivienne. 'Vive has left such a lasting legacy and it's such a powerful message that she's left behind, and it's going to inspire queens from now for generations to come,' Kitty says. 'She's so missed by everyone and I love her.' James Lee Williams, known professionally as The Vivienne, was the winner of the first series of RuPaul's Drag Race UK. She tragically passed in January at the age of 32 from a cardiac arrest. Despite the joy and colour brought by a month promising rainbows and acceptance, the versatile drag artist acknowledges more unfortunate events that have impacted the community this year. This includes the UK Supreme Court ruling that the legal definition of "woman" under the Equality Act 2010 is based on biological sex, excluding transgender women. 'It just reiterates how important it is to have pride and to have pride month,' Kitty reacts. 'And I mean, I'm coming to this speaking as a cisgender man about the legislation rules about trans and what is a woman. 'I think it's ridiculous and it's so stupid, like, mind your own business let live, let people live their truth, protect the dolls, that's what the most important thing is.' Kitty competed on the third series of RuPaul's Drag Race UK, in addition to competing on RuPaul's Drag Race Global All Stars. She is now set to set to star in the world premiere of The Diana Mixtape from 28 th July at HERE at Outernet alongside an equally star-studded cast.

Every year, the Lambeth Country Show hosts a hilarious, and frankly iconic, vegetable sculpture competition, where veg-loving artists create weird and wonderful scenes out of only the finest produce. In 2025 the competition saw Donald Trump, Chappell Roan and Mark Rylance recreated in veggie form. But who squashed the competition? And whose leaves were a major flop? Here are our favourite veggie sculptures from this year's country show. WINNER: 'Not In My Broc-Yard' It was the topic of the year: the battle for Brockwell Park. This artwork depicting a very angry broccolli alongside a grimacing 'Mark Pak-Choi-Lance' poked fun at the campaigners trying to stop festivals in the park, which help fund the free to attend Lambeth Country show. 'Not In My Broc-Yard' was one of three entries on this topic, but this feisty broccoli winning took the title with 704 likes on Instagram. Rebekah Vardy puts luxury £9.7m holiday home on the market after 'tough decision'
Rebekah Vardy and her husband Jamie have made the 'tough decision' to sell their sprawling holiday home in Portugal, which they refer to as their 'sanctuary'. Rebekah Vardy is listing her luxurious Portuguese villa, described by her and husband Jamie as their 'sanctuary', for an ambitious £9.7million. Last month saw Rebekah, 43, ordered by a judge to pay £1.2m towards Coleen Rooney's legal fees, on top of her own costs surpassing £2million from her ill-fated libel lawsuit initiated in 2022. The High Court battle tarnished her public image and inflicted similar damage on her marketability to potential sponsors. Jamie, 38, continues to be among the Premier League's high fliers, having pocketed around £7.3 million from Leicester City last season. He is also enticingly linked with a Manchester United move. Despite this, it has been suggested that the Vardys are offloading their property due to monetary setbacks stemming from the notorious Wagatha debacle and its consequences. The couple have previously rented out their beloved abode, situated in the privileged enclave of Quinta do Lago, fetching up to £30,000 weekly. Yet, they have lately made the reluctant decision to sell, reports the Mirror. A confidant relayed to the Mirror: "They are selling the Portuguese pad - and are looking at different holiday places now. They had some great times there, but just decided it was time for a change. It's actually laughable for anyone to think it has anything to do with the court case. Nothing could be further from the truth. And that's shown by the fact that they are looking for a new holiday pad." The property, now on the market through upscale realtors Knight Frank, boasts a hefty £9.7 million asking price. Despite the recent surge in Algarve property values, with increases of up to 16 per cent according to some reports, the Vardys' villa is considered ambitiously priced, as one anonymous agent told MailOnline. "It's undoubtedly a stunning and very modern property, but there are many more traditionally-styled places in that area which some people might prefer, of similar size, but priced a lot more competitively," he said. The luxurious villa features three swimming pools, a gym, a steam room, and six bedrooms, all overlooking the 18th green of the North course at the resort. Knight Frank has extolled the virtues of the villa, saying: "This magnificent property, built over four levels, showcases meticulous attention to lifestyle details." The grand four-storey home also includes a cinema room, roof terrace, and sauna, set on roughly 0.64 acres. The listing details add: 'In addition to the three external pools, which epitomise a contemporary lifestyle, the villa includes a central electro-chromic glass lift accessing each floor. "The impressively landscaped gardens complement the property's style, creating a true haven for modern living. The villa is conveniently located within walking distance of the golf course and other renowned amenities within the Quinta do Lago resort." In 2022, the couple had a scare when their plush villa came under threat from nearby wildfires. A family source revealed to The Sun at the time: "It's been horrifying. Their neighbours have all been evacuated, and one by one, residents are being told to leave their homes. "Becky can see smoke everywhere, and she's terrified about the kids breathing it in. The water is also down, so she's relying on bottled water, which, obviously, there is only a finite amount of at home. "Jamie and their friends and family back home have all been really worried. Things are developing by the hour, but she's praying the fire brigades, who have been brilliant, can get things back under control. She's genuinely worried. Vardy suffered a defeat in a High Court case against the I'm A Celeb star in 2022 after being accused of leaking stories about her to the press. The notorious Wagatha Christie affair was ignited by a sensational open letter penned by Mrs Rooney and posted on social media in October 2019, where she claimed to have sleuthed out who was behind the leaks to the newspapers. Rooney publicly claimed that Mrs Vardy's account was the source of three newspaper stories featuring false details she had posted on her private Instagram profile - her trip to Mexico for a 'gender selection' procedure, her plans to return to TV, and the flooding in her home's basement. Rebekah vehemently denied the allegation and tried to sue Coleen, initiating a libel case that escalated all the way to the High Court.
