The Year's Most Addictive Mobile Game Is Delightfully Absurd

In the year's most addictive, fast-paced mobile game, a jolly, round-bellied character with a hand for a head uses a green, flopping fish as a table tennis ball. It later shoots arrows at a bull's-eye that pops up from a toaster like an Eggo waffle.
Humorous absurdity fuels the fun in What the Clash?, an Apple Arcade exclusive inspired by Nintendo's irreverent WarioWare microgames.
Initially, I was terrible at the first three games available in this silly endeavor: twisted table tennis, racing and archery. (Five more games can be unlocked for free.) Yes, there are tutorials, sometimes obtuse. But they do not prepare you for the strange mash-ups that are to come, which seem like they were created by a mad scientist. The result is more Mel Brooks than Mary Shelley.
At the start of each round, three game cartridges are presented at a poker table seen from a bird's-eye perspective by two online players. A green wine bottle spins and randomly chooses, say, the racing game, which is placed into a console that looks suspiciously like something Nintendo made in the 1980s.
Each player is then dealt a selection of cards, putting forth the one that may lead to victory — and almost certainly to chaos. The combination of cards is what provides the game's ingenuity. In one daunting fusion, mini slot-car racers are blocked at times by the paws of insouciant black cats. Getting to the finish line requires a sense of timing that must come naturally to some. But not to me.
Twisted humor is everywhere in What the Clash?, a sequel to What the Golf? and What the Car? At every milestone, a tortured 'Happy Birthday' is squeezed out on a concertina. I imagined it was played by Clash Handicoot, an older stock character who is a nod to a popular 1996 PlayStation game.
What the Clash? keeps your attention by keeping things moving. It's possible to win a best-of-five match during a commercial break, and one game may take 30 frantic seconds. The tense battles are about balanced play and sanguine oddness.
There is also strange customization. I rarely enjoy dressing up a game character, with the exception of placing Astro Bot in retro hero costumes. The items in the store here, though, are fun enough to pique engagement. Using coins earned by winning matches, I bought a bear finger puppet to place atop my middle digit as well as a David Bowie-inspired lightning tattoo.
The store sorely needs more humorous pop-culture-inspired options, however, and I'm not sure why a ruby ring costs a mammoth 500 crowns, the in-game currency. Items don't offer extra power or agility. But I still purchased the ring, perhaps to flaunt a luxury item at opponents.
One snippet from the lo-fi soundtrack amplified the way I felt about playing to the point of tendinitis. It's a six-note whistling ditty signifying the laid-back comfort of a win.
That's how I felt when I emerged as a victor — on top of the world. There can also be a haunting loneliness to the tune. After losing a close match, I felt the lowest of lows. My flexors throbbed in pain. It was time to quit.
But then a new card combination appeared, asking me to launch giraffes from a bow to keep away a threatening rolling barrel. It was important to continue at all costs.

When Apple announces the new software updates for the iPhone at the keynote for next Monday's World Wide Developers Conference, there will be iOS nuggets which will be relevant for the AirPods, a new report says. Most are new, though some have been rumored before. You'll know already that on AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4, you can nod or shake your head to accept or decline a call, for instance. Very handy in a crowded elevator, for instance, even if it does make you look a bit weird. It's reported that new head gestures will include extending the volume adjustment during Conversation Awareness. It's not clear what the gesture might be — there are only so many ways you can tip, twist or move your head. If you haven't tried Audio Mix on the iPhone, it's great. When you record a video, the iPhone can separate different sections of the audio so you can boost voices or create discrete audio effects. It looks like the AirPods could create a microphone mode that's studio quality. We'll have to see what this means. If you fall asleep while listening to something, a new feature can spot this and pause playback, it's claimed. This is especially useful if you're listening to an audiobook and you wake up to hear the AirPods revealing the denouement of a novel when you fell asleep ages ago. Clicking an AirPod stem could trigger the iPhone camera, it's thought. This is good. It's something that was possible years ago with EarPods when you could squeeze the control on the cable. Finally, the report claims that the pairing experience for AirPods when connecting to shared iPads could be improved. Despite the report, I'm not sure all the above will be announced. AirPods tend to get their moment in the sun during the iPhone event in the fall. Even so, it's possible some of them will feature in the keynote or those screens showing 'all the features we haven't had time to show you,' for analysts to spot later.

Dance Aerobics is So Deeply Uncool…And That's Why I Love It

There are people out there who will tell you that you should never do any form of physical activity that you don't enjoy. While I respect and admire their commitment to approaching exercise with zeal, I have to ask: how? I genuinely love various forms of exercise (which, at the moment, include mat Pilates, swimming laps, going for long walks with my dog, and weeding crabgrass at the community garden), but I've come to think of them as a kind of deposit in my future-happiness account; I know movement will eventually make me feel great, especially now that I'm no longer working out in a constant quest to lose weight, but in the actual moment of moving—and, even more so, the moment before a workout class when I have to squeeze myself into a sports bra and actually get out the door—I'm often full of dread. This was true, at least, until I attended my first 'fiercely noncompetitive dance aerobics' class at Pony Sweat, a studio based in my hometown of L.A.'s Frogtown neighborhood that describes its practice as feeling like 'dancing in your bedroom to music from a favorite mixtape.' Terrible dancer that I am (unless I've had two to four martinis, in which case all bets are off), I felt nervous and typically dread-filled even stepping through the door of the Pony Sweat studio, but the moment the lights dimmed and the music started, something weird happened: I forgot to feel stupid. I don't know exactly what it was about Pony Sweat that got me out of my shell and happily dancing around to combinations I'd never seen or tried before, but I'm guessing it was a combination of the gloriously retro '80s soundtrack, the unbridled enthusiasm of the dancers around me (many of whom, like me, weren't perfectly on-beat and didn't seem to have any prior familiarity with the workout), and the instructor, Emilia, shouting what I'm now turning into a kind of exercise mantra: 'Fuck the moves.' I ended the hour-long class with sore calves and an exhausted glow, driving home as fast as I could to gush about Pony Sweat to my boyfriend and pre-book my best friend to attend the next week's class with me—and although I might have expected to feel good after the class, what really surprised me was how much fun I had during and how little clock-watching I did as I bopped around. There are definitely workouts I've enjoyed in which knowing exactly what you're doing matters—weight lifting, for instance, sort of depends on your ability to listen to instructions and not accidentally injure yourself with something heavy—but the loosey-goosey, 'do what feels fun' approach of Pony Sweat really speaks to me right now as a 31-year-old doing my best to get comfortable being bad at things. I've always resented the aspects of life that are hard for me (math, cleaning, driving, the list goes on), but exercise is a low-key, low-stakes way to lean into the question of what my time and my life would look like if I reframed my idea of perfection and focused instead on trying to have genuine fun while also meeting my bodily movement goals.
