Seoul shares open tad lower on battery, auto losses
South Korean stocks opened slightly lower Friday, as investors continued to cash in recent gains.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index shed 7.84 points, or 0.25 percent, to 3,071.72 in the first 15 minutes of trading.
The overall losses were led by battery and automotive shares, with top battery manufacturer LG Energy Solution down 1.01 percent and leading automaker Hyundai Motor falling 0.95 percent.
Internet portal operators and refiners also extended their losses. Top portal firm Naver slid 0.96 percent, and leading refiner SK Innovation tumbled 1.2 percent.
Chip shares traded mixed, with Samsung Electronics up 0.33 percent and rival SK hynix falling 1.54 percent.
The local currency was trading at 1,355.15 won against the greenback at 9:15 a.m., down 1.75 won from the previous session. (Yonhap)

Justice Ministry to add over 22,000 foreign seasonal workers in 2nd half
The South Korean government announced Friday plans to allocate some 22,700 foreign seasonal workers in the second half of this year, supporting rural farming and fishing communities experiencing labor shortages during the harvest season. The Ministry of Justice, which held a council meeting to review the allocation of overseas seasonal workers with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries on Tuesday, announced it would assign 22,731 foreign workers to 100 local governments nationwide. The ministry stated that the decision reflects the urgent labor demands of farms and fisheries ahead of the upcoming harvest season. With the addition, a total of 95,700 foreign seasonal workers will be hired to work at South Korean farms or fisheries this year nationwide. Among them, 86,633 employees will work in agriculture, while 8,876 will be allocated to fisheries. Seoul has earlier announced plans to employ 72,684 of such workers in the first half. The 2025 figure for foreign seasonal workers represents a 41 percent increase compared to last year's 66,778. The government is also aiming to enhance language support services to minimize language barriers between foreign workers and local employers. Though the ministry previously assigned one interpreter when more than 100 workers with the same nationality were employed and up to two interpreters for more than 300, it decided to assign more interpreters for each language based on specific demand from the respective local governments. The measure was made to reduce misunderstandings and miscommunication, while improving work efficiency and the retention rate of workers.

The average South Korean worker earned 3.97 million won ($2,900) before taxes and worked 165.6 hours in April, according to data released Thursday by the Ministry of Employment and Labor. Nominal wages rose 2.7 percent compared to the same month last year. Real wages, which reflect purchasing power after adjusting for inflation, increased 0.6 percent to 3.41 million won. By industry, the highest average earnings were in finance and insurance, where workers made an average of 7.44 million won, a 6.1 percent increase from a year earlier. This was followed by the energy sector, with an average wage of 5.89 million won. At the bottom was the accommodation and food services sector, where workers earned just 2.18 million won on average. Working hours also increased. The average of 165.6 hours that employees worked in April was 6.1 hours more than the same month last year. But the ministry attributed the uptick to the calendar. April 2024 had one more working day than the previous year, due to the Election Day for the 22nd National Assembly falling in April 2023. Also, as of May, 20.29 million people were employed at businesses with at least one employee, roughly the same as a year earlier. However, hiring activity slowed. A total of 826,000 new hires were recorded, down 61,000 from a year ago. The construction sector saw the sharpest drop, with 46,000 fewer hires.

Hyundai Motor triples Ioniq 9 exports in May, shifts focus to Europe amid US tariffs
Exports of Hyundai Motor's Ioniq 9, a large-sized fully-electric SUV, tripled in May, driven by European sales as part of a strategy to counter US automotive tariffs. According to reports Friday, the Korean auto giant exported 1,482 units of the Ioniq 9 last month, marking a 275 percent increase from 539 units in April. Most of the SUVs reportedly headed to Europe, world's third-largest electric vehicle market following China and the US. Hyundai Motor's increase in Ioniq 9 exports to Europe is interpreted as a strategic move to mitigate the 25 percent auto tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump. The company recently started sales of the SUV in major European countries, holding a launch event in Copenhagen, Denmark. The starting price in Sweden is 759,900 kronor ($79,900). In the meantime, the sales demand of the Ioniq 9 in the US is handled by Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America in Georgia. Last month, HMGMA produced and sold 2,382 units of the Ioniq 9 within the US, nearly tripling the domestic sales of 867 units for the same period. 'Hyundai Motor is driving its efforts to navigate the geopolitical uncertainties in global markets, particularly in the US,' said an industry source on condition of anonymity. 'The Ioniq 9, Hyundai's first large-sized electric SUV, expands the company's diverse range of EV offerings and is expected to aggressively push its sales in the European market.' First exported in April, the Ioniq 9 boasts the largest wheelbase in its segment, offering enough space in both the second and third rows and achieves over 500 kilometers of driving range on a single charge. The vehicle boosts cabin quietness with features like an active noise control system and sound-absorbing tires. It also optimizes aerodynamic efficiency with advanced technologies, including the dual motion active air flaps.
