UK Foreign Office gives new travel advice for Belgium due to nationwide strikes
The UK's Foreign Office has updated its travel advice in light of nationwide strikes in Belgium that are severely disrupting transport across the country.
With the Easter school holidays now in full swing and bank holiday weekends ahead, April provides ample time for short spring city breaks in Europe.
However, the UK government has given a warning to anyone planning to travel to Belgium of national strike action.
'Unions plan to hold nationwide strikes on the 13th of every month until further notice,' the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said in an update published on Wednesday, 15 April.
'A general strike is planned for 29 April and may cause severe travel disruption across the entire country.
'Monitor local news and check with your travel provider regarding potential delays.'
The Foreign Office adds that strike action is an 'ongoing issue' in Belgium that can affect international travel as well as cause severe disruption across the country.
It adds that strike action may be announced at short notice, and planned strike action may be extended at short notice. Strikes can coincide with demonstrations and protests.
'For regular updates on any disruption, check local news and follow advice given by your travel provider,' the Foreign Office says.
'If you are in areas where large gatherings are taking place, remain vigilant and move away quickly if there are signs of disorder. Avoid protests, expect delays on some major roads and follow the advice of the authorities.'
The Foreign Office advises travellers to seek further domestic travel information by visiting the websites of Belgian Railways, regional public transport, as well as Brussels, Charleroi and Antwerp airports for international travel information.
In February, tens of thousands of Belgians took to the streets to protest the new government's planned pension reforms, part of a multi-day strike that halted air traffic in the country.
Protesters clashed with police outside the headquarters of liberal centre-right party MR, with police using tear gas and a water cannon, while similar clashes also happened outside the headquarters of political party Les Engages, Reuters reported.
Brussels airport cancelled 430 flights on 13 February, while the strikes also disrupted public transport.
A similar incident happened again on 31 March, when a national strike kept flights grounded and caused some public transport disruptions as people protested against the Belgian government's austerity plans.
The strike on 31 March saw less than half of the planned buses and trams operating in Flanders, while national railway service operated a minimal service, with less than half of all trains running, Euronews reported.

Gatwick strike action poses threat to start of summer holidays
British holidaymakers may face disruption ahead of summer as staff at the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) are to stage fresh strikes in a dispute over pay and conditions. Members of the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union based at sites including Gatwick airport will walk out on June 3, 4, 10, 11, 17 and 18, following stoppages in January and March. Pay negotiations for 2025-26 are under way, but PCS warned the gap between the two sides was 'significant'. Fran Heathcote, PCS general secretary, said: 'We're frustrated and disappointed after management imposed a 2024 pay offer without engaging in meaningful negotiations. 'The current offer – a one-off, non-consolidated payment of £1,150 – has been rejected by union members as inadequate amid rising living costs and concerns about long-term pay erosion. 'Our members deserve a fair pay rise that reflects the cost of living, restores the value of their salaries and recognises the value of their work. Instead, CAA has chosen to bypass negotiations and impose a deal, which is unacceptable to us.' A spokesman for the UK Civil Aviation Authority, said: 'We continue to engage with our PCS trade union colleagues, and after prolonged discussions it is disappointing that PCS trade union members are taking industrial action in June. 'PCS trade union members make up approximately 5 per cent of the CAA's employees and we do not anticipate any disruption to the aviation sector, or any impact on our regulatory oversight activities or other safety and security critical work, as a result of this action.' Previously in April, Unite, the union, warned of 'flight delays, cancellations, long queues at check-in and baggage delays', in Gatwick. All the Clues & Easter Eggs You Might Have Missed in the Destination X Premiere
Do you have what it takes to suss out Destination X? In the premiere episode of Destination X, hosted by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, 10 players were tasked with sussing out where the X they were based on a series of hints and challenges — but it's not as simple as it seems. In this bold new travel competition series from NBC, Europe is turned into a real-life gameboard as complete strangers are invited to participate in the trip of a lifetime and the ultimate geo-guessing contest. These adventurous players will traverse Europe in a blacked-out Destination X bus to figure out where the "X" they are each week. In each episode, the players disembark the bus to visit unique and unfamiliar tourist attractions that have been gamified into experiential challenges. They'll rely on their knowledge of pop culture, history, geography, and observational skills to win clues to their current location and earn an all-important advantage. Contestants must tap into their own personal expertise, identify hidden clues that are disguised as artifacts, and discern intentional misdirects from competitors to ultimately determine their whereabouts. The player clues were the most obvious, but there were a lot of them, so let's do a full rundown before we get to the more advanced ones: Mack and Ally were gifted a brief look outside the bus at the Roman ruins at Volterra, an arena that resembled the Colosseum in miniature. While racing through the cobblestone streets of Orvieto, Italy, Mack and Biggy solved a series of riddles, which involved Pinocchio, Olives, and Roman Numerals, all of which could have clued them in on their general locale in Italy. While Mack and Biggy were busy at street-level in Orvieto, their teams were deep in St. Patrick's Well, sussing out riddles that freed their above-ground counterparts from their black-out goggles. The two riddles the teams had to figure out led them to coins depicting Romeo & Juliet (get it? ROME-eo...? Yeah, you get it. Not to mention that the classic Shakespearean tale takes place in Italy) and Wine (a major export of Italy). RELATED: Throughout their challenge, Mack and Biggy earned more coins every time they figured out a riddle first. Mack killed it, earning four gold coins that had images of Ninja Turtle Weapons (all four of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are named after Italian artists: Donatello, Raphael, Leonardo, and Michelangelo), "1492" with an Outline of Christopher Colombus (Christopher Colombus was Italian, and sailed to the Americas in 1492), Thumbs Up/Down (a hint to the famous scene in Gladiator, in which Joaquin Phoenix's ruthless Roman Emperor Commodus determined gladiators' fates with a thumbs up or thumbs down in the Colosseum), and Swords Crossed with Swiss Cheese (a hint at the Swiss Guard, who protect the Pope in Vatican City, which is located within Rome). Meanwhile, Biggy managed to get just one coin, which showed Ballet Slippers (ballet originated in the courts of Italy). Our host Jeffrey provided the audience with a big clue at the end of the episode's second challenge, saying in his voiceover: "The ancient hilltop town of Orvieto, to be exact, renowned for its stunning cathedral, rich olive oil, and of course, St Patrick's Well, built in the 1500s by Pope Clement VII, who fled to Orvieto from a city 90 miles away, a city which also happens to be our first Destination X." Pope Clement VII fled from Rome to Orvieto in the 1500s. By episode's end, several players had correctly guessed that the challenges and clues had all hinted at one final location: Rome, Italy — specifically, the famous Roman Colosseum. However, Josh Martinez placed his X in the Map Room in Milan, resulting in his excommunication from Destination X. "Destination X, you got me!" Josh said in his final moments. "Wildest, craziest game I've ever played. This bus was insanity." New episodes of Destination X premiere on Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on NBC, and are available to stream the next day on Peacock.
