Elliotte Friedman Gets Painfully Honest About Possible Player-Coach Role for Sidney Crosby
Elliotte Friedman Gets Painfully Honest About Possible Player-Coach Role for Sidney Crosby originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Pittsburgh Penguins officially named Dan Muse as their next head coach this week, replacing Mike Sullivan after three straight seasons without a playoff berth.

Muse, 42, enters the role with experience as an assistant coach with the Nashville Predators and most recently with the New York Rangers, where he specialized in managing penalty killing and special teams.
Muse will now take over a team still anchored by a Penguins core of veterans featuring Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang, all of them under contract for at least one more season.
While the appointment signals a new direction for the franchise, Sportsnet's Kyle Bukauskas brought an interesting idea to the table on Thursday.
The analyst asked fellow NHL insider Elliotte Friedman on Thursday's episode of the "32 Thoughts" podcast whether Crosby might take on more than just an on-ice role given his experience and legendary stature within the franchise.

Bukauskas raised the idea of Crosby acting in an unofficial player-coach role next season, something Friedman doesn't see happening.
"The only reason I'm going to say no, Kyle, is that I think if you went to Sidney Crosby and said, 'I see you more as a player-coach than anything else right now,'" Friedman said. "You might get stuffed into a trash can."

Despite his age and 20 seasons of NHL experience, Friedman thinks Crosby remains focused on competing and is only interested in playing the game, not coaching it.
"I can't think of Crosby as a player-coach," Friedman said. "I still think of him as an incredibly driven guy who wants to win more."

Friedman added that the hiring of Muse will likely draw more attention to Crosby's opinion and influence within the team's evolving structure, given that this is the first head coaching job taken by Muse throughout his professional career.

QB Power Rankings Spark Mocking Reaction from Bears WR Luther Burden III
QB Power Rankings Spark Mocking Reaction from Bears WR Luther Burden III originally appeared on Athlon Sports. In the heart of NFL offseason debates, media outlets and analysts are publishing their updated rankings—and not everyone is thrilled with what they're seeing. One recent list in particular has drawn a mix of raised eyebrows and rolling eyes from fans and players alike. A new QB ranking from a national outlet didn't just spark conversation—it prompted a reaction from one of the Bears' most prized rookies. Advertisement FOX Sports' Henry McKenna released his latest QB Stock Market column, an outlook ranking all 32 starting quarterbacks. The post, which was reshared by the Caleb Williams Fan Club account, featured notable names like Jalen Hurts at #5 and Jaden Daniels at #6. Quarterback Caleb WilliamsGetty Images But what stood out was the inclusion of Vikings second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy at #12—well ahead of Bears QB Caleb Williams, who landed at #21. That detail didn't go unnoticed by Bears rookie wide receiver Luther Burden III, who reacted with a single laughing emoji. While Burden didn't add any words, the implication was clear—and he wasn't alone. Fan responses piled on quickly: 'I don't know how you rank McCarthy at all considering he didn't play a snap last year.' 'J.J. MCCARTHY even being on the LIST higher than 32!' 'JJ McCarthy hasn't played a single snap in the league and yet he's top 15???? Yeah Ok lol.' Advertisement McKenna defended the placement: 'You could put just about anyone in the Vikings' QB slot, and I'd get excited about him. But McCarthy was a top-10 pick in what's shaping up to be an incredible QB class. This year, McCarthy might look like 2023 Brock Purdy — an athletic point guard with an idyllic supporting cast.' Burden's subtle jab likely stems from belief in what he's seen from Caleb Williams throughout camp. As offseason workouts continue, it's clear that inside the locker room, confidence in the Bears' new franchise quarterback is already taking root. Red Wings Have Pieces to Make Offer for Stars' Robertson
Detroit Red Wings may have building blocks for a trade involving Dallas Stars' Jason Robertson. Image Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman recently addressed swirling speculation around the Dallas Stars and star forward Jason Robertson. Advertisement On 32 Thoughts, he emphasized that the team is not actively shopping Robertson, who is entering the final year of his contract with two more years under team control, but is instead trying to gauge his true market value ahead of a complex summer. B/R Open Ice (@BR_OpenIce) on X B/R Open Ice (@BR_OpenIce) on X Several NHL insiders are reporting that Jason Robertson's name is on the trade market... What would you want your team to give up for J-Rob? With the 2025–26 season poised to bring a wave of free agents for Dallas like team leader in points Matt Duchene as well as captain Jamie Benn, Mikael Granlund, Cody Ceci, and Evgenii Dadonov. Advertisement The Stars must carefully balance cap space and roster talent or they could run into some serious problems which may leave a struggling Robertson on the outside. Bookmark The Hockey News Detroit Red Wings team site to stay connected to the latest news, game-day coverage, and player features. Friedman added that if Dallas were to entertain serious trade discussions involving Robertson, they would almost certainly seek a return that is close to what they gave up in March for Mikko Rantanen. That blockbuster Rantanen deal cost Dallas a blue chip prospect in center Logan Stankoven, two conditional first-round picks (2026 and 2028), and two third-rounders (2026 and 2027). Advertisement To envision what a Robertson trade might look like, Detroit often comes up in conversation. The Red Wings own a very deep prospect pool, with promising talents like Nate Danielson, Simon Edvinsson and the NHL-ready Marco Kasper, plus they hold four first-round picks over the next three seasons. More Red Wings: Golden Knights' Nic Hague Linked to Red Wings in Trade Rumors The assets closely resemble what Dallas has spent and could give the Detroit front office, a leg up on the rest of the pack. Still, the narrative edges toward the Stars keeping Robertson. The more likely scenario remains extension discussions, with Robertson's market value becoming a key component at the negotiating table. Should a trade eventually be on the table, the benchmark has been set. Dallas would be targeting a least one of the Red Wings top prospects as well as two firsts and two future thirds, which may be a enticing offer for a Detroit team that could get a 90-110 point scorer and has room to grow at 25 years old. Advertisement Robertson posted a career-best 109 points in the 2022–23 season with 46 goals and 63 assists over 82 games, establishing himself as one of the league's elite forwards. He followed it up with back-to-back 80-point campaigns over the last two seasons. Never miss a story by adding us to your Google News favorites.
