South Korea votes for new President: Liberal frontrunner Lee Jae-myung headed for easy win
South Korea on Tuesday, June 3, votes to elect their new President months in a snap election after months of turmoil triggered by the ouster of Yoon Suk Yeol following the imposition of a martial law in December 2024.
After his martial law debacle, Yoon Suk Yeol was impeached by South Korean Parliament and then removed by the Constitutional court on April 4, paving way for the snap elections for the election of a new President.
A high voter turnout is anticipated, with polls open from 6 am to 8 pm following early voting on Thursday and Friday, during which over a third of the 44.39 million eligible voters had already cast their ballots.
As of 7 am, 1.08 million people, or 2.4 per cent of the electorate, had voted at 14,295 polling stations around the country, according to the National Election Commission. Around 2.5 million people had cast their ballots nationwide as of 8 am.
The National Election Commission will certify the result of South Korea elections on Wednesday, June 4. Observers say the winner could emerge as early as midnight.
The winning candidate will immediately be sworn in as President on Wednesday for a single, full term of five years without the typical two-month transition period.
No Presidential transition is expected as Yoon was removed in April and the office lies vacant.
According to the opinion polls and pre-election surveys, Yoon Suk Yeol's arch rival Lee Jae-myung, who had lost the last Presidential polls to Yoon by slimmest margin, is headed for an easy win this time.
According to polls released a week before the vote, Lee is leading Kim by 14 percentage points with 49 per cent public support in a Gallup Korea survey, although Kim had narrowed an even wider gap at the start of the campaign on May 12.
Lee Jae-myung had spearheaded the opposition-controlled Parliament's impeachment of Yoon over the imposition of martial law in December.
During the six hours of martial law, Lee Jae-myung scaled the walls of the National Assembly to bypass the security cordons and called on his supporters to protest the orders by Yoon.
The main conservative candidate, Kim Moon Soo, has struggled to win over moderate, swing voters as his People Power Party remains in a quagmire of internal feuding over how to view Yoon's actions.

Opp says Govt scared, Pahalgam will be in focus in monsoon session too
A day after INDIA bloc parties wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding a special session of Parliament to discuss the developments following the terror attack in Pahalgam, the Opposition parties Wednesday hit out at the government for announcing the dates of the Monsoon session 'so much in advance' and alleged that it was done to dilute the demand for the special session. Barring AAP and NCP (SP) led by Sharad Pawar, all other INDIA bloc parties had signed the letter. The AAP is learnt to have sent a separate letter raising the same demand. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju Wednesday announced that the Monsoon session of the Parliament will commence on July 21 and conclude on August 12. Criticising the government action, Congress communication in-charge Jairam Ramesh said that 'usually the dates of the Parliament session are announced a few days in advance'. 'But this time, the dates were announced 47 days before the session began — this has never happened before,' Ramesh said. He alleged that the decision was taken by the government only to avoid the demand of the India alliance to convene an urgent special session of Parliament. 'Serious issues including the failure of the government to bring to justice the terrorists responsible for the Pahalgam attack, impact of Operation Sindoor and the situation that arose thereafter and blatant politicisation of Operation Sindoor should be discussed in Parliament,' the Congress MP said. 'All these issues, which are of supreme national interest, will remain the focus of discussion during the monsoon session as well. After six weeks, the Prime Minister will have to answer some difficult questions,' said Ramesh. Samajwadi Party MP Javed Ali Khan said the government 'wants to dilute the Opposition's demand for a special session'. 'This is unprecedented,' he said. TMC Parliamentary Leader in Rajya Sabha Derek O'Brien said 'the government is scared'. 'Usually, a Parliament session is announced around 19 days ahead. This time, they announced it 47 days ahead. So scared,' said O'Brien. AIMIM chief and MP Asadduddin Owaisi said that during the Monsoon session, there must be a debate on the Pahalgam attack, the alleged security lapse, and those accountable for it. AAP Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh said that the Monsoon session is a regular session, and the government was not doing any favours by announcing it now. 'We will continue our demand for a discussion in (Parliament) on the issues related to Pakistan,' said Singh. RSP MP N K Premchandran also criticised the government action.

Withdraw tender inviting private CA firms to assist CAG: MP
1 2 3 Madurai: Madurai MP Su Venkatesan has sought the withdrawal of a tender issued by the comptroller and auditor general (CAG) of India, inviting private chartered accountant (CA) firms to assist the CAG in the audit of public sector companies and local bodies. In a letter to President of India Droupadi Murmu on June 3, Venkatesan urged her immediate intervention to withdraw the tender. He argued that the decision of the CAG to invite private CA firms to assist in the audit would dilute the independence of the CAG and the principles envisaged by the Constitution. He stated that private CA firms are expected to work alongside the audit officers carrying out the audit. He emphasised that the CAG is the highest auditing authority in the country, established by the Constitution, and is only accountable to Parliament. The audit conducted by private CA firms is not the same. He further mentioned that the CAG was granted independent status to ensure that the audit work is done without any political interference. The distinct and independent nature of the CAG should be protected, as the move to issue the tender is dangerous. He also expressed concern that confidential and sensitive information of private sector companies and local bodies may fall into private hands.

Congress questions Centre over monsoon session announced ‘47 days' in advance
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Wednesday accused the Centre of diverting attention from the demand for a special Parliament session on Operation Sindoor by suddenly announcing the monsoon session 47 days in advance, which he said was a first in India's history. He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi can run away from a special session, but he cannot run away from the monsoon session. 'The Parliament session is always announced a few days in advance, maybe up to one week or ten days in advance. This session has been announced 47 days in advance. Never before in India's parliamentary history has a session been announced 47 days in advance,' Jairam Ramesh told ANI. He said Congress and the INDIA alliance demand a special Parliament session to discuss key issues like the Pahalgam attack, growing China-Pakistan ties, and India's alleged foreign policy failures. 'There is a continuing demand from the Indian National Congress, INDIA alliance parties for a special session of Parliament to discuss the Pahalgam terror attack, the fact that the terrorists have not been brought to justice, the repeated claims of President Trump, 'Narender ka surrender' to Trump,' said Jairam Ramesh. The Congress leader said that the opposition parties also want answers on why Operation Sindoor was abruptly stopped after four days, emphasising that these matters deeply concern the people of India. 'The hyphenation of India and Pakistan, the growing nexus between China and Pakistan, and the failure of our diplomacy and our foreign policy. These are the real issues and the revelations of the Chief of Defence Staff that has been made in Singapore and not in our own country. We are demanding a discussion on these issues now because these are the issues that are agitating the people of India. Why was Operation Sindoor stopped suddenly after four days?,' he added. He alleged that the Prime Minister is trying to avoid questions by diverting attention from the demand for a special Parliament session, and accused the government of announcing the Monsoon session suddenly to shift focus. 'So these are the issues the Prime Minister does not want to answer. We've been demanding a special session of Parliament. In order to divert attention from the special session, the government suddenly announces the monsoon session of Parliament. The Prime Minister can run away from a special session, but he cannot run away from the Monsoon session,' said Jairam Ramesh
