Russell on pole in Canada, Verstappen second
George Russell put Mercedes on pole position in Canada for the second year in a row on Saturday with Formula One champion Max Verstappen alongside for Red Bull two weeks after they clashed in Spain.
McLaren's Formula One championship leader Oscar Piastri qualified third with Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli in fourth place.
Lando Norris, Piastri's British teammate and closest title rival only 10 points behind the Australian after nine of 24 rounds, qualified seventh at Montreal's Circuit Gilles Villeneuve after an error-filled session.
The clash between Russell and Verstappen in Spain remained a talking point going into the weekend, with the Red Bull driver on the brink of a ban as he chases an unprecedented fourth successive Canadian victory.
Verstappen, 0.160 slower than the pole time of 1:10.899 seconds, is only a penalty point away from suspension and Russell will try to turn that to his advantage on the short run down to turn one from the start.

Kubica steers Ferrari to third consecutive 24 Hours of Le Mans
LE MANS - Former Formula One driver Robert Kubica took the chequered flag in his bright yellow "privateer" Ferrari to give the Italian marque a third consecutive win in the 24 Hours of Le Mans on Sunday. In a thrilling race, which saw the top four separated by just over 20 seconds going into the final 15 minutes, Kubica and his co-drivers Philip Hanson and Ye Yifei (#83) finished just 15sec ahead of a Porsche driven by Kevin Estre, Matt Campbell and Laurens Vanthoor. All three drivers of #83 are first-time winners with Kubica becoming the first Polish winner and Ye the first from China. Two more Ferraris crossed the line for third and fourth, thwarted in their bid for a clean sweep of the podium, something they had achieved twice before in 1961 and 1965. It was still a great day for the tifosi although joy will not be unconfined in Maranello. As the winning car was not entered directly by the manufacturer, but by the AF Corse team, Ferrari will not take the points for victory in the World Endurance Championship.

Ferrari win Le Mans for third year in a row
The #51 factory Ferrari of 2023 winners Alessandro Pier Guidi, Antonio Giovinazzi and James Calado completed the podium with last year's winners Antonio Fuoco, Nicklas Nielsen and Miguel Molina fourth in the #50 Ferrari. Kubica's triumph came on the same weekend as the Canadian Grand Prix at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, scene of his only Formula One win with BMW Sauber in 2008 after a huge crash at the same track in 2007. It also capped an astonishing racing redemption story for the 40-year-old whose Formula One career ended after a near-fatal rally crash in Italy in 2011 that partially severed his right forearm.
