Sports Seriously
One of Maryland's best seasons in the past decade ended on a sour note Thursday and with uncertainty surrounding the future of its head coach.
Kevin Willard revived the hype in Maryland. After a disappointing 16-win season in 2023-24, the Terrapins went 24-7 in the regular season with the "Crab Five" lineup that was one of the best offensive units in the Big Ten — and nationwide. A buzzer-beating shot by Derik Queen got the Terrapins into the Sweet 16, and Maryland looked like it could give No. 1 seed Florida trouble in the first half Thursday. Willard could continue this spectacular season with the team's first Elite Eight trip since 2002, the same season the Terrapins won their lone national championship.
However, the Gators chomped down in the second half en route to their ninth straight victory, and Maryland exited stage left.
Soon, it could be Willard doing the same thing out of College Park.
"I don't know what I'm doing," he said after the 87-71 loss. "I haven't talked to my agent. I haven't talked to my wife. I made a promise to this team that I was gonna just focus on this team, and that's all I've done. So, I haven't talked to anybody."
Willard has been rumored to be a strong candidate for the Villanova job. For all we know, a deal could already be in place or be done hours from now. It also could all have been a ruse to get a better deal to stay with Maryland or generate more NIL funds.
He said he has no idea if Villanova has made an offer for him. His agent may have been talking to people, but Willard added he doesn't know anything about any possible conversations.
The mess all started before Maryland played its first game of the tournament. Willard called out former boss Damon Evans, who bolted to Southern Methodist, and then the head coach blamed the media for the speculation over whether his time in College Park was coming to a close.
Willard said one of his "biggest concerns in life right now" is he doesn't know who his next boss will be, with the athletic director position open.
Fans sure haven't been happy with their head coach, and it was evident when the team left its hotel to head to Chase Center on Thursday. In a moment where loyal supporters should be cheering on their squad to victory, some booed as Willard made his way through the crowd. Other videos on social media showed fans at bars shouting some NSFW chants when the head coach was shown on the big screen.
Willard said he understands the displeasure because he's in "limbo," but he said he feels the same way.
"I'm kind of pissed, to be honest with you, because I didn't expect to be in this situation," he said.
The No. 4 seed Maryland earned this season was its best since 2015, and the 27 wins it finished with were the most since the 2015-16 season. That season was also the last time the Terrapins went to the Sweet 16.
Maryland was trending in the right direction. Now, it may have to start all over.
"This is going to be a family decision," Willard said. "I love College Park. I love Maryland.
"But when you're at this point in your career and you're looking at things, I have to take everything into consideration about what's going on moving forward."

Maryland center Derik Queen praised in 2025 NBA draft by ESPN analyst

Maryland center Derik Queen praised in 2025 NBA draft by ESPN analyst Derik Queen is a potential lottery pick in the 2025 NBA draft because of his skill set, and the former Maryland center recently earned high praise from ESPN analyst Paul Biancardi. Queen was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, averaging 16.5 points, nine rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.1 blocks in 36 games on 52.6% shooting from the field. He helped lead the Terrapins to their first Sweet 16 appearance since 2016. The 6-foot-10 standout is highly touted for his versatility on offense and ability to score in various ways. He is a tremendous competitor and demonstrated throughout the year his ability to impact games on defense, traits that earned him a high distinction from Biancardi. Queen, also an AP All-American honorable mention, set the program freshman scoring record (594 points) after registering 12 20-point games and 15 double-doubles, which led all first-year players. He ranked sixth in scoring average among Power Four freshmen. The 20-year-old competed in the combine last month, registering a 7-foot wingspan in the anthropometric measurement testing. He dazzled with that length with the Terrapins, another key trait that makes him an intriguing prospect at the next level. Queen had a tremendous rise up draft boards throughout the season and is on the verge of becoming a first-round pick, as a result. He projects to have a bright future ahead and should fit in well with teams drafting in the lottery on June 25.

Alabama's opponent for 2025 SEC-ACC Basketball Challenge revealed

Alabama's opponent for 2025 SEC-ACC Basketball Challenge revealed Alabama basketball has reportedly learned its opponent for the annual SEC-ACC Challenge. CBS Sports college basketball insider Jon Rothstein reported Wednesday that Nate Oats' Crimson Tide will take on coach Brad Brownell and the Clemson Tigers at Coleman Coliseum in the 2025 SEC-ACC Challenge. An official date and start time were not announced. The matchup between Alabama and Clemson will be a rematch of teams who met twice during the 2023-24 season, most notably in the West Region final of the Elite Eight in Los Angeles. The Crimson Tide punched their first-ever ticket to the Final Four with an 89-82 win over the Tigers at Arena (Staples Center) on March 30, 2024. Alabama made 16 3-pointers in the victory, getting a game-high 23 points from Mark Sears, who made 7-of-14 shots from beyond the arc, and 19 points off the bench from Jarin Stevenson. Alabama and Clemson previously met in the 2023-24 regular season on Nov. 28 in Coleman Coliseum, an 85-77 Tigers victory in that year's SEC-ACC Challenge. One of Tigers' star players from their 2024 run to the Elite Eight, forward Ian Schieffelin, recently joined Dabo Swinney and the Clemson football team as a tight end. Last year, Alabama defeated North Carolina in the SEC-ACC Challenge, 94-79 in Chapel Hill behind 20 points from Sears and 15 apiece from Labaron Philon and Aden Holloway. Philon recently announced his decision to withdraw from the 2025 NBA draft and return to Tuscaloosa for his sophomore season. As part of their 2024-25 schedule, the Crimson Tide will also face Illinois in Chicago, Purdue at Coleman Coliseum, Rick Pitino's St. John's Red Storm at Madison Square Garden, and the Arizona Wildcats at Legacy Arena in Birmingham among other nonconference foes. Alabama finished 28-9 last season and reached the Elite Eight before falling to Duke in the East Region final in Newark. The Crimson Tide were ranked No. 6 in the final USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll. Clemson went 27-7 overall and 18-2 in ACC play and was a No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers fell to McNeese State, 69-67, in a first-round upset in Providence, Rhode Island. Clemson was ranked No. 23 in the final Coaches Poll. Contact/Follow us @RollTideWire on X, and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Alabama news, notes and opinions.

Where did LSU ace Kade Anderson go in USA TODAY Sports' recent mock draft?

Where did LSU ace Kade Anderson go in USA TODAY Sports' recent mock draft? Ahead of the College World Series, LSU baseball star Kade Anderson continues to receive hype in MLB mock drafts. USA TODAY Sports released a mock earlier this week, slotting Anderson to the St. Louis Cardinals with the No. 5 pick. Anderson is emerging as a consensus top-five pick, with some mocks even putting the LSU starter at No. 1. "The Cardinals are almost guaranteed to get one of the elite college lefties and in this universe, it's Anderson, who has sparred with Doyle for the NCAA strikeout lead all year and will take his 163 punchouts in 103 innings into at least one more start, in Omaha," wrote USA TODAY's Gabe Lacques. Anderson worked as a reliever as a true freshman in 2024, but took over LSU's ace role in 2025. He's thrown 103 innings and owns a 3.76 ERA. In his last appearance vs. West Virginia in the super regional, the Mountaineers tagged Anderson for some runs, but the LSU ace made it through seven innings. LSU will begin its 2025 College World Series on Saturday vs. Arkansas. Anderson is likely to get the nod. If LSU wants an eighth national title, it needs Anderson to be dynamite in Omaha.
