Former council leader charged over fraud offences
Former Glasgow City Council leader and ex-Labour MSP Frank McAveety has been arrested and charged over fraud offences.
Police Scotland confirmed the allegations were related to incidents in Glasgow between 2022 and 2024.
A force spokesperson said: "A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal in due course."
Scottish Labour and Glasgow City Council have been contacted for comment.
Mr McAveety, 62, was council leader from 1997 until 1999, when he was elected to the Scottish Parliament.
He served as deputy minister for local government, deputy minister for health and community care and minister for tourism, culture and sport in the early years of devolution.
Mr McAveety lost the Glasgow Shettleston seat to the SNP in 2011 and was re-elected to Glasgow City council in 2012.
He became the local authority's leader for a second time in 2015 but was succeeded by the SNP's Susan Aitken in 2017.

Trump plans memorial to his mother on new Scottish golf course
Donald Trump is creating a memorial garden to his Scottish mother on the site of his new golf course in Aberdeenshire. The main feature of the garden will be a tribute carved in stone imported from Mary Anne Trump's birthplace, the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. The announcement of Mr Trump's tribute to his mother came as Trump International Scotland unveiled the layout for a new course alongside the existing links course on his Menie estate. It is set to formally open this summer. Known officially as the Old and the New, the courses will combine to create what the company describes as ' the greatest 36 holes in golf' on the Aberdeenshire coast. The US president's mother was born Mary Anne MacLeod on Lewis, but emigrated to New York in 1930 when she was 18. She was one of tens of thousands of Scots who travelled to the US and Canada in the early years of the last century looking to escape economic hardship at home. She was hired as a domestic servant at the Carnegie Mansion on New York's Fifth Avenue and six years later married Frederick Trump, the successful property developer son of German migrants, and one of the most eligible men in New York. The US president was the fourth of the couple's five children. Mr Trump has spoken fondly of his mother, who died in 2000, aged 88. He said in an interview last year: 'The Scottish very great people, they're tough people. They're good fighters. [My mother] was funny, she had a great sense of humour.' Sarah Malone, the executive vice-president of Trump International, said: 'With the New course opening now fast approaching, we are delighted to share the final layout of this extraordinary links and the completion of The Greatest 36 Holes. 'It has been a phenomenal journey to create two truly exceptional world-class championship golf courses, across this magnificent stretch of North Sea coastline. 'The Trump family has a deep affection for Scotland, not only as the home of golf, but as the ancestral home of President Trump's beloved mother, Mary Anne MacLeod.' The plans for the second course were approved in 2019 alongside proposals for 550 new homes, shops, offices and restaurants. Planners received 2,921 valid representations from the public about the plan, 2,918 of which were objections and just 3 supported the Trump Organisation application. Drugs campaigner Peter Krykant dies, aged 48
A prominent Scottish drugs campaigner who set up a safe consumption bus has died. Peter Krykant, a former heroin addict, became a public figure after he set up an unofficial supervised facility in a van which he took around Glasgow. Krykant often talked about his own battles with addiction, admitting he started taking drugs when he was just 11 and speaking out about a relapse in 2021. Police confirmed the 48-year-old's death was being treated as unexplained and a post-mortem examination will be carried out in due course. A Police Scotland Sotland spokesperson said: "Around 5.15pm on Monday, 9 June 2025, police attended an address in Graham Avenue, Larbert following a report of a concern for person. "The body of a 48-year-old man was found within. His next of kin has been informed." Mr Krykant started taking drugs when he was 11 and began to inject heroin at the age of 17, but stopped using drugs for 11 years. He went on to open a mobile unit in a converted van with the aim of preventing overdoses and the spread of blood-borne viruses among users in Scotland. He was arrested in 2020 after launching his "safe space" where users could take their own drugs under medical supervision. Charges against him were later dropped. Earlier this year The Thistle, the UK's first and only drug consumption room opened in the East End of Glasgow in an effort to reduce drug deaths. Krykant ran for election as an independent candidate in the 2021 Scottish Parliament election, campaigning on drug policy issues.
