Insane $100,000 trail of destruction left behind after driver allegedly leads police on wild pursuit

Daily Maila day ago

A driver has faced court after allegedly ramming shopfronts and causing $100,000 worth of damage during a meth-fuelled rampage that ended after a police pursuit.
Daniel Young, a 47-year-old from Rosemeadow, fronted Downing Local Court on Wednesday following the alleged pursuit from Campbelltown, southwest Sydney, to Sydney International Airport, in the city's inner-south.
NSW Police allege Young mounted the footpath on Queen Street, Cambelltown, in a Ford ute at about 1.50am on Wednesday.
Officers saw the ute enter the carpark of Campbelltown Police Station a short time later, but the driver took off.
Police attempted to stop the ute when it returned to Queen Street and a pursuit was initiated when it failed to pull over.
Young allegedly sped down the Hume Highway and M5 Motorway for 50km until he reached the airport in Mascot.
'The vehicle has then allegedly entered a restricted Sydney International Airport area controlled by a boom gate before the driver allegedly rammed the gate - causing significant damage,' NSW Police said in a statement.
'The vehicle stopped and the driver was arrested by officers attached to Highway Patrol - assisted by the dog squad.
'He was subject to a roadside drug test, allegedly returning a positive detection to methamphetamine.'
Methamphetamine was also allegedly found inside Young's phone.
Young was taken to Mascot Police Station and underwent a secondary oral fluid test, which has been sent for further testing.
He fronted court later on Wednesday where he was charged with police pursuit - not stop - drive dangerously, enter/remain on major facility cause damage to facility, exceed speed greater than 45 km/h, destroy or damage property greater than $15000, possess prohibited drug, and breach of bail.
It's understood about 20 stores were damaged in Campbelltown with the bill expected tor each $100,000.
Hannah Moy, owner of the newly-opened Enchanted Trove, shared photos of her damaged store and asked customers to be patient as online orders may be delayed.
'I will handle this with humour, but please send love because we are pretty gutted,' she wrote.
Eat Shop Love also sustained massive damage to its storefront after its owners had recently repaired its glass doors following a robbery last week.
Young's lawyer, Tia Marlo, sought bail for her client.
She argued he had a limited criminal history and needed urgent rehabilitation for an alleged drug addiction.
The application was denied with the magistrate noting Young was already on bail at the time of the alleged offence and allegedly cam close to driving on airport grounds.
Young is expected to return to court on June 17.

Australian Olympian suspended after video of horse whipping emerges

SYDNEY, June 13 (Reuters) - Dressage rider Heath Ryan, who competed for Australia at the 2008 Olympics, has been suspended by Equestrian Australia after video of him whipping a horse during training was posted on social media. In echoes of the incident that resulted in six-times Olympic medallist Charlotte Dujardin being barred from the Paris Games last year, the two-year-old video showed Ryan whipping the horse repeatedly. "Equestrian Australia is extremely alarmed and concerned by the treatment of the horse shown in this footage," the governing body said in a statement. "Equestrian Australia has imposed a provisional suspension of this person's membership (which) means they may take no part in competitions or events as competitor or Official or in the organisation of, or participation in, any event under (our) jurisdiction." The 66-year-old rider will remain suspended until an investigation into the video is completed, Equestrian Australia added. Ryan released a lengthy statement on social media defending his actions, saying he had saved the six-year-old horse from being destroyed after it had attacked its owner. "The most awful video of me on a young horse has just surfaced. This horse was dropped off at my place on his way to the knackery," he wrote. "I felt obliged to the horse to just have a look and see if it was possibly salvageable. Well did I get a shock and so the video. I have never ridden anything like it. I am so sad this was caught on video." Ryan said the video had been placed online by an "unhappy ex-employee" and posted another which he said showed the horse thriving in a new home. "If you think I did that flippantly you are wrong. I hated reaching out in those moments to (it) and asking the hard questions," he added. "All I can say is that this awful video was collateral damage of me from the bottom of my heart launching a rescue mission." After last year's Dujardin ban, the global governing body for showjumping and dressage pledged it would be uncompromising in enforcing animal welfare. "Equestrian Australia takes matters of animal welfare very seriously," the local governing body added in its statement.

Pheobe Bishop's mum's incredible act of kindness after her daughter's tragic death

A fundraiser backed by Pheobe's family has been organised to support local volunteer groups in what they hope creates a fitting legacy for the 17-year-old. Pheobe went missing on her way to Bundaberg airport in southern Queensland on May 15. Her housemates James Wood, 34, and Tanika Bromley, 33, were charged with her murder on June 6, more than three weeks after Pheobe disappeared. Officers discovered what were believed to be the teenager's remains later that day near a national park, an hour's drive from Bundaberg airport. The community rallied around Pheobe's family, with hundreds attending two emotional candlelight vigils. Family friend Tracey Berends hoped the fundraiser would help return the love. She organised the GoFundMe campaign that has received the family's backing, with money to be raised for local volunteer and not-for-profit groups. More than $7,000 had been donated by Friday morning, with the local SES volunteer group and Pheobe's former school set to benefit. 'The GoFundMe was created after speaking with Pheobe's family with the sole purpose of supporting local charities and volunteer organisations that were involved in the search for her, particularly the SES,' Ms Berends told AAP. 'These volunteers worked tirelessly on their hands and knees through difficult terrain and did so without expecting anything in return. 'It's important to the family that these selfless efforts are acknowledged and supported in Pheobe's name.' Pheobe's former school - the not-for-profit learning centre Y School in Bundaberg that is assisted by volunteers - has also been targeted for the fundraiser. 'There is absolutely no financial gain being taken by the family,' Ms Berends said. 'Their only hope is to create something beautiful and lasting in remembrance of Pheobe, a way to honour her kind, gentle spirit and the impact she had on so many lives.' Pheobe's mother Kylie Johnson said the fundraiser was a way to acknowledge a school where her daughter thrived as well as the SES volunteers who helped 'bring our baby home'. 'I've even had a few (SES volunteers) approach me with hugs and sorrys that they couldn't get her home sooner to us. They didn't give up and they got her back to us!' she posted on Facebook.

Tragic update after Finn Coyle vanishes without a trace near Perth

The body of 21-year-old Finn Coyle has been found a week after he vanished without a trace in Perth. Coyle, who lived with autism, disappeared from his family home in Carmel, 25km from the Perth CBD last Friday. His body was located on Thursday morning at a property in Carmel on Thursday. Close to 50 police officers, SES volunteers and loved ones spent days searching rugged bushland in the Perth Hills. The search involved efforts, including a drone broadcasting a heartfelt message from Finn's mother. Nearly 50 police officers, SES volunteers, and loved ones searched the rugged bushland in the Perth Hills over several days to try and find him. The effort included a drone broadcasting a heartfelt message from Finn's mother flying over the search area. 'It's mum here. The police and volunteers are looking for you,' she said. 'You're not in any trouble. If you hear or see the drone, please walk towards it.' Finn's brother, Connor, said Finn had been struggling with mental health issues in the lead-up to his disappearance. 'I think he's very resourceful, and he's a great young man, but he's suffering a lot of mental health. 'We're losing a generation of young people to mental health.' A report is being prepared for the coroner.
