Man suspected of killing worshipper at French mosque has surrendered to police in Italy

The Hindu28-04-2025

A man suspected of killing a Muslim worshipper, Aboubakar, in a French mosque has turned himself in to police in Italy, authorities said on Monday (April 28, 2025).
French police began searching for the suspect after the attack on Friday (April 25) in the former mining town of La Grande Combe in southern France. The assailant recorded the attack on his phone, and security camera footage showed him shouting insults at God, local media said.
The French Interior Minister's office said on Monday (April 25) that the suspect had surrendered to police in Italy, without elaborating.
Local prosecutor Abdelkrim Grini said on Sunday (April 27) that investigators are taking into account 'the possibility that this was an Islamophobic act'. 'It's the one we're working on first, but it's not the only one,' he said.
The suspect is a man born in France in 2004, who lived in the area and did not have a criminal record, the prosecutor said.
'Racism and hatred based on religion will never have a place in France,' French President Emmanuel Macron said. 'Religious freedom is inviolable.' The Grand Mosque of Paris condemned the attack in a statement and said the victim, a young man identified only as Aboubakar in French media, had just finished cleaning the mosque when he was killed.
A march was held on Sunday (April 27) at La Grand Combe in support of the victim and a gathering against anti-Islam crimes was held in Paris.

Dale's Donuts in LA permanently closed due to riot-linked car fire? Here's the truth

Amid the Los Angeles riots, social media posts have claimed that the iconic Dale's Donuts in the city has permanently closed. An X post shared a video of a car on fire in front of Dale's Donuts. The caption reads, 'The iconic American-owned Dale's Donuts in Los Angeles has permanently closed after a group of illegals set a car on fire in front of their business during anti-ICE protest and the LAPD did nothing.' Several X users fact-checked the claim, saying the iconic shop actually shuttered in 2021. One user wrote, 'Once again, this shi*** 'News' account spreads lies and nonsense. Dale's Donuts in Compton (at 15904 S. Atlantic Ave) permanently closed in October 2021. That's when the iconic 'Big Donut' drive-in shut its doors after more than 70 years in operation.. NOT BECAUSE OF 'Anti-ICE Protests' Clown.' Another X user slammed those 'spreading lies and nonsense' about the store closure. It does appear that Dale's Donut in Compton, Los Angeles, has not been operating since 2021. Yelp reviews from this year show that the shop is out of business. Even though the restaurant was featured in the Super Bowl Halftime show in 2022, it had been closed for some time prior to that, according to the Los Angeles Times. Meanwhile, protests have flared up in Los Angeles, with Donald Trump suggesting that the troops be brought in. In another Truth Social post, the President stated that Los Angeles 'has been invaded and occupied by Illegal Aliens and Criminals.' 'Now violent, insurrectionist mobs are swarming and attacking our Federal Agents to try and stop our deportation operations — But these lawless riots only strengthen our resolve. I am directing Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, and Attorney General Pam Bondi, in coordination with all other relevant Departments and Agencies, to take all such action necessary to liberate Los Angeles from the Migrant Invasion, and put an end to these Migrant riots. Order will be restored, the Illegals will be expelled, and Los Angeles will be set free. Thank you for your attention to this matter!' Trump wrote.

Manish Sisodia skips ACB summons in corruption case linked to classroom construction

NEW DELHI: Former Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia skipped the questioning by the Delhi government's ACB in connection with a case of alleged corruption in the construction of classrooms in government schools that was to be held on Monday, official sources said. The Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) had summoned AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and former PWD minister Satyendar Jain for questioning. While Jain appeared before ACB on Friday, Sisodia was supposed to appear on Monday. Jain was questioned for over five hours by the ACB. "Manish Sisodia's counsel informed us that he won't be able to come today. He will be called again," an ACB source said. According to AAP sources, Sisodia had a pre-planned engagement and was not able to appear before the ACB. His lawyer has sent a reply to the ACB, party sources said. The summons came after the ACB registered an FIR in the matter on April 30 based on allegations of financial irregularities to the tune of Rs 2,000 crore in the construction of over 12,000 classrooms or semi-permanent structures in Delhi government schools.

Jaishankar to step up diplomatic push on visit to France, Belgium

On his third visit to Europe in the past few months, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar left on Sunday (June 8, 2025) for a week-long visit to France and Belgium. He is expected to meet with his counterparts in both governments, and in the European Commission and European Parliament in Brussels. This visit is part of the government's efforts to step up its diplomatic engagement post Operation Sindoor to garner support for India's fight against terrorism. 'The visit of EAM is expected to further deepen India's friendly relations with the European Union, France and Belgium and give renewed momentum to ongoing cooperation in diverse areas,' the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said, announcing the visit from June 8 to 14. In March, Mr. Jaishankar had travelled to the U.K. and Ireland, and in May, he had visited the Netherlands, Denmark and Germany. In France, Mr. Jaishankar is scheduled to visit Paris for bilateral talks with French Foreign Minister Jean Noel Barrot, and to Marseille to address the 'Mediterranean Raisina Dialogue', a conference of the Ministry and Observer Research Foundation (ORF). This is significant because Marseille is one of the European ports along with Trieste, Italy, and Piraeus, Greece that are in the running for the India-Middle East-Europe-Economic Corridor (IMEC) route, and although ambitions for the project launched in 2023 have been dimmed due to the Israel-Gaza conflict, New Delhi is keen to keep discussions on it alive. In Brussels, he will hold a 'Strategic Dialogue' with EU High Representative and Vice-President Kaja Kallas, the Ministry said. Mr. Jaishankar is also expected to raise India's request for the repatriation of diamond merchant Mehul Choksi, who is under arrest pending a trial for extradition to India to face charges of fraud and embezzlement. Mr. Jaishankar will end his tour in time for the G-7 summit in Canada, although it is unclear whether he will attend. He is also scheduled to travel to Washington for the Quad Foreign Ministers' Meeting in early July and could accompany PM Modi to the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro on July 5-6.
