CPI cautions Andhra Pradesh govt. against taking unilateral decision on Banakacherla project

The Hindu5 hours ago

CPI State secretary K. Ramakrishna says it is not correct on the part of the government to decide on the Godavari-Banakacherla project unilaterally.
Andhra Pradesh would face disastrous consequences like Telangana's Kaleshwaram project if it went ahead without a proper plan, and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu should immediately convene an all-party meeting regarding the pending irrigation projects and new proposals, Mr. Ramakrishna said while addressing the media in Vijayawada on Sunday.
Mr. Ramakrishna said the government was not focusing on completion of pending irrigation projects. Instead, it was rushing ahead with new proposals such as the ₹82,000 crore Godavari-Banakacharla project. He recalled how, under BRS chief K. Chandrasekhar Rao's rule, the Kaleshwaram project in Telangana was initiated with a ₹81,911 crore estimate. Already, ₹1.03 lakh crore had been spent on it and yet it remained incomplete, the CPI leader said.
'Engineers bypassed'
Mr. Naidu should consult all political parties before proceeding with such a massive project. Reports suggest that Mr. Naidu was bypassing irrigation engineers and directly negotiating with a big contractor, Mr. Ramakrishna said.
'The government is risking its credibility by unnecessarily burdening itself with the Banakacharla project and focusing entirely on contract-based politics. The government should involve farmers' associations, irrigation experts, and political parties before going ahead,' he said.

Eatala defends role in Kaleshwaram decisions, challenges Cong to reveal Ghose report or seek CBI probe

Hyderabad: BJP MP Eatala Rajender on Sunday clarified his appearance before the commission probing irregularities in the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project, stating that he had only explained the decisions taken during his tenure as finance minister and his specific role in them. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He asserted that he was under no obligation to shield former chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, and took aim at Congress ministers for making what he called "misleading and politically motivated" statements aimed at confusing the public. Addressing the media, Rajender said, "I did not go before the commission to make political statements. I went to explain facts. The Kaleshwaram project wouldn't have taken shape without the cabinet sub-committee, which recommended redesigning several components. All related govt orders, sub-committee decisions, and recommendations will soon be made public." He took strong exception to minister Tummala Nageswara Rao's claim that the Kaleshwaram decisions were not discussed in the cabinet. "Nothing happens without cabinet discussion and approval. Every decision bore the signatures of ministers, including Tummala himself, Jupally Krishna Rao, and Kadiyam Srihari," Rajender pointed out. He challenged the Congress govt to release the PC Ghose Committee report, which is examining the alleged irregularities in the project. "If they are serious about accountability, let them act on the Ghose report. If they can't, hand it over to the CBI," Rajender said, adding that transparency, not political mudslinging, was the need of the hour.

Bharat Mata cannot be made a topic of debate: Guv

Thiruvananthapuram: Governor Rajendra Arlekar said that the concept of Bharat Mata should not be made controversial. "Indians grow up reciting the pledge as brothers and sisters, and children of one mother. The concept of Bharat Mata should be seen above any ideology or politics one believes in. Making Bharat Mata a subject of dispute is most unfortunate," the governor said. While speaking at a function organized to distribute the awards to students who won the Mann Ki Baat-based quiz on Sunday, the governor said, "It is happy to note that now those who were hesitant to chant Bharat Mata ki Jai have started chanting the same. Bharat Mata cannot be made a topic of debate or discussion. Can our mother be made a topic of discussion?" The governor's statement came in the wake of the boycott by agriculture minister P Prasad from a function organized at Raj Bhavan on the occasion of environment day. The minister boycotted the event citing the reason that a picture of Bharat Mata used by the Sangh Parivar was kept at the official function of the govt. The Raj Bhavan went ahead with the event and offered floral tributes before the picture of Bharat Mata by the Governor. The minister later inaugurated a related event at the govt secretariat. The CPI organized an event on Saturday in all districts by hoisting the national flag and planting trees as a mark of protest against the governor. In the event held at the state headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram, the CPI leaders raised Bharat Mata ki jai slogans.

If used properly, Waqf Amendment Act is pro-Muslim: Chandrababu Naidu

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu reiterated his party's support to the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, saying that if used properly, this law is pro-Muslim. Naidu's Telugu Desam Party (TDP) voted in Parliament in support of the contentious law enacted by the Modi government, which got the President's nod in April. The TDP is part of the ruling NDA alliance in the Centre, alongside Nitish Kumar's JDU, Chirag Paswan's LJP and Jayant Chaudhary's RLD, among others. Speaking exclusively to India Today TV on Sunday, the TDP chief recalled the work done by his previous governments for Muslim minorities in the state and said that his party is fully committed to the welfare of all religions and communities. "If used properly, the Waqf law is pro-Muslim," Naidu said. The Amendment to the 1995 law was challenged by several opposition parties in the Supreme Court, who, after hearing all sides, has the verdict reserved. Naidu also touched upon a range of issues of national significance as well as those concerning Andhra Pradesh. Watch the full interview.
