Memorial For Unmarked Graves ‘Place Of Healing And Unity'

Families and loved ones of those resting in unmarked graves at a south Auckland cemetery want a memorial to be a place of peace, reflection and love – where all are welcome.
The unmarked graves at Pukekohe Cemetery, many of them Māori babies, have long been a source of pain to many in the rural south Auckland community.
The decision to build a memorial came in the wake of the publication of Dr Robert Bartholomew's 2020 book No Māori Allowed, which detailed historic racism in Pukekohe, and the subsequent Reikura Kahi documentary of the same name.
In the documentary, it revealed that Māori were barred from public toilets, segregated at the cinema and swimming baths, forced to stand for white bus passengers and barred from schools from 1920 until the early 1960s.
Children, who died from measles, diphtheria, whooping cough and tuberculosis, were buried in unmarked graves.
Pukekohe Cemetery Committee Manu Taiiko and chair, Makere Rika-Heke, said multiple hui have been held, starting with the whānau of those resting at the unmarked graves, seeking views on the memorial.
'The over-riding message was that despite the graves marking a bleak time in our history, a memorial should be a place of healing and unity,' Rika-Heke said.
She said whānau with loved ones in the urupā were struck by the recurring calls for any memorial to be for everyone.
All hui were centred on sharing whānau stories and histories, and how families wanted to feel and connect during visits to place, space and site.
Rika-Heke said participants recognised the grief associated with having whānau in unmarked graves, recollecting a strong relationship between their stories and the market gardens – so prominent in the area at the time, and where many of the families involved worked and lived.
'Many questions and requests arose. Some, like putting signs up to tell people about the project, were simple, but others remain more complex, such as balancing differing perspectives around naming those resting in the urupā, how to collectively acknowledge them, and how to respectfully address information access.
'These are sensitive issues that underline why it is important to consider all views, and to treat them with respect.'
A Facebook page and a website will be launched soon to keep people informed about the kaupapa/project, so those living outside the area are included and can engage, she said.
'Hearing from whānau that they heard only snippets from their own parents and elders, because it was too painful for them to talk about, was deeply moving.
'We want others to have the chance to share.'
She said people told them the lack of sharing from their parents and grandparents was to protect them.
'They wanted them to dream big, do anything they wanted, and live lives unburdened by the past, but there are still feelings of trauma and harm left behind.'
Rika-Heke said calls for a memorial to be inclusive suggested a desire to recognise what happened.
'This kaupapa is about acknowledging the past but doing better in the now and for our future – our children and grandchildren, about advancing together on common ground and finding an accord so that all our communities can flourish.'
The committee will soon focus on the development of a concept design for a memorial, for feedback.

The Māori community at a Dunedin secondary school says its looming enrolment zone will diminish the roots of an important cultural partnership. Queen's High School has turned its roll around so drastically, the Ministry of Education is proposing an enrolment zone to limit its growth. One of the reasons for that growth has been the success of the combined Queen's and King's High Schools' kapa haka group, He Waka Kōtuia, which has drawn Māori students from across Dunedin. Now, group leaders Komene Cassidy, Cherie Ford, Angelina Kiore and Paulette Tamati-Elliffe fear Māori students outside the enrolment zone will miss out on a cultural experience they cannot experience elsewhere. Mr Cassidy said no other school could presently provide the culturally informed experience the group offered. Queen's had a strong connection with Ōtākou Marae and a lot of Māori peninsula whānau wanted to send their children to the school. If the proposed home zone came into effect, it would take away an option Ōtākou Rūnaka whānau had had for years, Mr Cassidy said. "That then becomes an issue for mana whenua and for us, and our ability to continue to support." There was a concern that the relationship between the Ōtākou Rūnaka and the school was being overlooked and not valued as it deserved. A line had been drawn in the sand that did not fit with the existing relationships between the school and its community, Mr Cassidy said. "There's a lack of forethought about what the effects are going to be." Mrs Ford said North Dunedin Māori whānau were also concerned their children would not be able to continue their learning down a te ao Māori pathway in a mainstream setting. She had two sons who had grown up attending the bilingual classes at North East Valley School and Dunedin North Intermediate School. "[Families] are very concerned that the students have had eight years in a te ao Māori-focused setting and then where do they send them from there. "For many of them, they already have connections to He Waka Kotuia and they would like their students to come out this way." Photo: Peter McIntosh The support from the school for the He Waka Kotuia programme had enabled it to grow and be successful, she said. The school had one of the biggest Māori rolls in Dunedin, with 142 enrolled Māori students in 2024. Queen's High School Māori prefects Jade Taani, 17, and Mahinārangi Maihi, 18, both chose to go to Queen's because of He Waka Kōtuia. Mahinārangi said growing up, it had been a goal for her to go to Queen's and be a part of the group. "If it didn't work out I would be like extremely upset." The connections the students in the group made with each other were different from the ones they made in class, she said. "It's more than just a kapa haka group. "It's a safe space to be Māori." During her time at Queen's the group had grown into a big family, Mahinārangi said. "If I didn't have this I wouldn't be who I am today." Jade said the group had helped her stay in school and stay connected to her culture. She used to attend a bilingual class with Mr Cassidy every Tuesday and he helped her develop a passion for kapa haka. The group helped her understand what was happening in politics from a Māori perspective, she said. It would be a lot harder for her to connect with the Māori side of her identity without being a part of the group.

Instructor Diane Perkins had a full house at her beginners' line dancing class last Wednesday morning, teaching festival-goers and visiting group The Harmonic Resonators some country moves. Ms Perkins' students, with varying levels of skill, danced the "cab driver" to the band's song Kaitaraiwa — Māori for driver. The morning class, held at the Gore Town & Country Club, and the Resonators' later show at the St James Theatre were both part of the Bayleys Tussock Country music festival, which finished on Sunday. Band member and ukulele player Ryan McIntyre said his group all had a country music background, mostly centred around the Morrinsville Country Music Club in the Waikato. Two of his fellow musicians had competed in the festival's Gold Guitar Awards and Mr McIntyre said frontman Jeremy Hantler competed again this year, winning the traditional section. McIntyre also sings in another band and line dances while performing country classic Achy Breaky Heart. He said he was always looking for new dances and often filmed his feet doing the steps, because they were so easy to forget. The group also danced to Ron Mitchell's I'll Be Country and Ms Perkins said Mitchell's songs were great to dance to. There were more than a few giggles as learners stepped or turned the wrong way, but Ms Perkins said there was endless room for mistakes and it was about having fun.
