Gopashtami 2024: The Story Behind Gopashtami, Rituals And Significance
The festival is dedicated to worshipping and offering prayers to the cows. It is a well-known fact that members of the Hindu community believe cows to be the reincarnation of God. And so, on this day, people pray to cows and show gratitude and respect to these animals, who are regarded as life-givers.
Gopashtami Significance
In the Hindu culture, cows are referred to as 'Gau Mata' and are worshipped like a Goddess. For Hindus, cows are regarded as the soul of their religion. They believe that cows are pure and sacred beings who are to be revered like deities. According to Hindu mythology, it is believed that several divine deities reside inside a cow, which is why they occupy such an exceptional place in the heart of Hindus.
This sacred animal is believed to be the keeper of spiritual and divine qualities and is even considered a manifestation of Goddess Earth. Therefore, it is commonly believed that those who worship Gau Mata on the eve of Gopashtami will be blessed with a happy, harmonious, prosperous, and fortunate life.

The Story Behind Gopashtami
While there are several stories associated with the celebration of Gopashtami, the most famous legend is linked to Lord Krishna. According to the legend, on the specific day of Gopashtami, Nanda Maharaja sent his sons, Lord Krishna and Lord Balaram, to herd the cows for the first time since they had both entered into the Pauganda age, i.e. ages between 6 to 10 years. Therefore, from this day onwards, they would both be in charge of herding the cows.
According to another legend, it is believed that Lord Krishna suggested the people of Braj stop their annual offerings that were made to Lord Indra. This angered Lord Indra, and because of his ego, he wanted to show his might and power to all the people in Vrindavan. He decided to flood the region of Brij so that the people bowed before him. This resulted in seven days of prolonged torrential and unrelenting rain in the village.
When Lord Krishna realised that the people were in danger, he lifted the Govardhan Parvat on his little finger to save and shelter all the beings from Lord Indra's wrath. On the eighth day, when Lord Indra realised his mistake and accepted his defeat, he stopped the rain and sought forgiveness from Lord Krishna. The cow, Surbhi, showered milk on both Lord Indra and Lord Krishna. She then declared Lord Krishna as Govinda, i.e. the Lord of Cows. This is how the eighth day, called Ashtami, came to be celebrated as Gopashtami.

Gopashtami: Celebrations And Rituals
On Gopashtami, devotees wake up early in the morning to clean the cows and bathe them. The horns of the cows are also painted brightly with colours. The cows are decorated with clothes and jewellery. The cows are also fed special fodder for their good health.
As part of the rituals, it is customary to offer prayers and worship the calves and cows on this day.
The cows who symbolise Gau Mata are worshipped with water, rice, clothes, fragrance, jaggery, rangoli, flowers, roli, sweets, and incense sticks. Aarti is also performed on this day. In many regions and temples, specific pujas are also performed for Gopashtami by the pandits.
The ritual of worshipping cows and calves is similar to Govatsa Dwadashi in the state of Maharashtra. The cows are worshipped to seek blessings for a happy, harmonious, and prosperous life. If there are no cows in the house, devotees should go to a cowshed and serve the cows.

JENNIE: It's OK to be Different Day celebrates children with autism and their parents
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) — The inaugural 'It's Okay To Be Different Day' event is coming up June 21st. The day is also about Autism and Downs Syndrome Awareness. Vivian Butler is the owner of Kings and Queens Christian Academy, which is a daycare that serves special needs children. The event is her brainchild! Shaun Harris is a special needs teacher and founder of B Mighty Enterprises. Vivian Butler: Well, Jennie, I was sitting in my office at a daycare, and I've noticed a lot of my babies come in and they have special need problems. And with that being said, dealing with my granddaughter, also this has special needs. She's autistic. The Lord gave me, is okay to be different and allow these babies to be just who they are. A lot of them come in non-verbal and the Lord told me to look into their eyes and speak to their soul and pull out their voice. You know, a lot of times people talk about autism and they do 'autistic' things for the for the people. But it's never involving the children. I know, we do the autistic this, we do the autistic that. But we never include the child. This particular event, the Lord said include the babies. Don't leave them out because it's okay for them to be different. I called my son-in-law, Raymond Webber, and said, 'Son, this is what the Lord told me to do' and with that being said, he told me that we can use his gym, MTAG.' The day will include bouncy houses and face painting, the fire department is going to bring the fire trucks, and there will be lots of volunteers so the children can play and their parents won't worry. Shaun Harris: 'They can stand, they can run, they can jump — Whatever they want to do and have a good time. But also, this will also give the parents an opportunity to see how to interact in a different way, because sometimes they get burned out and they don't know. They get frustrated. So when they see someone, you know, reaching out or interacting with their child in a different way, I've learned that the parents learn from me.' Vivian Butler: 'We're looking forward to this day. We're so excited. The parents can get facials. They're going to have a private chef on the inside. The children are going to have food on the outside. We're going to have grills going. We've got a special deejay coming for them. So we're going to put our boots on the ground and we're going to make it happen.' Shaun Harris: 'We're grateful they are because they are – I always say that they are the magic. So to me, they are just the essence of love. And they're just what makes my heart beat. And all the things that are happening in this world, when there's sadness, a sickness, or devastation, those kids, when I look into their faces, everything is okay, even if it's just for a moment.' Once again, the inaugural 'It's Okay To Be Different Day' is coming up on Saturday, June 21st from1PM – 5PM. It's open to the public and it's going to be at 1610 Hunter Street in Augusta. Christianity saw ‘steep drop' in US over past decade, study finds. Here's why
Christianity declined more than any other religious group in the United States in the past decade, but remains the majority, according to a new analysis. The share of Christians making up the country's population decreased by 14.3 percentage points between 2010 and 2020, according to a Pew Research Center study released June 9 describing changes in the world's religious makeup. The analysis covers 201 countries and territories with populations of at least 100,000 people and is based on more than 2,700 data sources — including censuses, demographic surveys, population surveys and registers — collected over the past decade, researchers said. Christianity was also the only religion in North America — including the U.S. and Canada — that declined in that time period, falling 11%, the analysis found. The decline can be attributed to a large number of Christians leaving their religious identity, a form of 'religious switching,' researchers said, adding that surveys since 2020 show that the decline may have plateaued. North America saw 'a steep drop in Christians as a percentage of the region's overall population, and a corresponding rise in the percentage of the population that is religiously unaffiliated,' researchers said. The number of religious 'nones' in the U.S. grew by more than 90% in the past decade, according to the analysis. What is religious switching? Religious switching is when a person leaves the religious group they were a part of during their childhood for a different religious identity, according to researchers who said a majority of people stick with the religion in which they were raised. The growth of religious 'nones' is largely due to religious switching from people who grew up as Christians, the analysis found. Which other religious groups grew in North America? Many religious groups grew faster than the religion's population overall, with people in the 'other religions' category experiencing the highest percentage of growth at 62% in North America, according to the study. Hindus and Muslims in North America experienced the second highest percentage of growth, up 55% and 52%, respectively, the study found. Buddhists in the region grew by 27%, according to the analysis. The region's share of Jewish population grew the smallest amount, less than 1%, researchers said, attributing it to 'a relatively old age structure, low fertility rates and the absence of any major, new wave of Jewish immigration.' What drives religious change? In the past decade four main elements — age structure, fertility, life expectancy and religious switching — drove religious change, the study found. 'Younger groups with relatively high fertility and longer life expectancies have a demographic advantage because of their greater potential for 'natural increase,'' researchers said. For example, Muslims — the religious group that experienced the highest growth rate globally — did so because of their young age structure and high fertility rate, according to researchers.
