Man dupes spiritual guide followers of Rs 9 crore, arrested
NEW DELHI: A 44-year-old man, Mohit Wadhwa, was arrested for allegedly duping devotees of a spiritual guide by promising high returns on investment, police said on Wednesday.
Wadhwa, a resident of Rajouri Garden, was arrested following complaints from Gurpreet Kaur Rai and three other families, totaling 14 victims.
Wadhwa and his associates, all followers of a spiritual guide, convinced the victims to invest in various schemes in Dubai, claiming significant returns. Between September 2017 and September 2020, the victims collectively invested Rs 9 crore in multiple tranches. However, after the investments, they neither received returns nor any documents regarding their investments. During the probe, bank account statements of the victims and Wadhwa corroborated part of the transactions. Victims confirmed that they had been cheated by Wadhwa and his associates.
DCP (EOW) Amit Verma said, 'Wadhwa started organising Satsangs at his residence, where he gained the confidence of many devotees by making false promises.' Verma further revealed that some of the money was invested in cryptocurrency, while the rest was used for personal luxury. Wadhwa was arrested on May 9.

Kumaraswamy describes suspension of police officers as political ploy
Bengaluru, June 6 (UNI) Former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Friday sharply criticised the Karnataka government for its handling of the recent Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) felicitation event, describing the suspension of Police Commissioner B Dayanand as a political ploy to deflect responsibility. Speaking to the media in a joint BJP JDS press conference, Kumaraswamy said the government was distancing itself from the event, claiming it was not the organiser, but the sincerity of this claim was questionable. 'This is an attempt to manipulate public perception and protect political positions. There is no clear evidence that the government authorised or adequately managed the event,' he said. Kumaraswamy expressed serious concern over the confusion caused by dual arrangements for the event — one at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium and another on the Karnataka Legislative Assembly steps — which led to chaotic scenes and loss of lives. He emphasised that poor planning and lack of coordination by the government contributed directly to the tragedy. 'The government's vague permissions and conflicting communication created an unsafe environment for the public. This is not a failure of the police but a failure of the government's leadership and management,' he added. He also highlighted the inadequacy of compensation for victims of the accident, pointing out a stark disparity. 'In other states, victims receive good amount of compensation for serious accidents, whereas here only Rs 10 lakh is offered. While money cannot replace life, better humanitarian support is the least the families deserve,' Kumaraswamy said. On the suspension of police officials, he argued that merely suspending a few officers was a superficial response. 'Suspending two or four officers and damaging their reputations won't solve the deeper problems. The government must take full responsibility for the mismanagement,' he asserted. Kumaraswamy urged the government to stop blaming police personnel and focus on delivering justice and support to the victims and their families. 'There is no room for political games in tragedies. The people of Karnataka deserve transparency, accountability, and humane governance,' he concluded.

Day after Naxal leader Sudhakar's death, encounter breaks out in same area in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur
BIJAPUR: A day after top Naxal leader Sudhakar was eliminated by security forces in Indravati National Park area in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district, an encounter broke out in the same area on Friday, an official said. The encounter is part of the same anti-Naxal operation underway since Wednesday by personnel from the state police's Special Task Force (STF) and District Reserve Guard (DRG) as well as the CRPF's specialised unit CoBRA, he added. Intermittent firing between security forces and the Maoist ultras is underway, the official said, adding further details were awaited. Senior Maoist leader Narasimha Chalam alias Sudhakar, who had a bounty of Rs 40 lakh on his head, was killed in an encounter with security forces in Bijapur district on Thursday. Originally hailing from Andhra Pradesh, the 67-year-old Sudhakar was involved in indoctrination and radicalization of youth and also responsible for numerous Naxal attacks in Chhattisgarh, resulting in the death of civilians and security personnel, police said. The killing of Sudhakar, a member of the Maoists' Central Committee, comes a fortnight after CPI (Maoist) general secretary Nambala Keshav Rao alias Basavaraju (70) was neutralised by security forces in the Bastar region. Basavaraju was gunned down in Narayanpur on May 21.
