Sister act: Whoopi Goldberg gives Super Netball a boost with global broadcast deal

The Guardian5 hours ago

Hollywood icon Whoopi Goldberg is taking Australian netball to the world with her new global sport television network dedicated exclusively to women's sport.
Netball Australia and the All Women's Sport Network (AWSN) announced on Monday a multi-year broadcast deal to show Super Netball matches to more than 65 new countries.
Goldberg said she was 'so proud' to see the Super Netball competition join AWSN.
'I think y'all are terrific,' she said in an Instagram video. 'I just watched you play and I see that your fans are really loving you, so we want to make sure that we put you everywhere in the world so that everybody knows about you.'
Goldberg and AWSN co-founder George Chung launched the network at the end of 2024, with Goldberg saying her motivation for the project was sparked by seeing women's sport not receive the same coverage as their male counterparts.
'I knew that if I couldn't find these sports and watch the amazing female athletes playing them, others weren't finding them either,' she told Forbes at the time. 'I really hope shining a light on women's sports will help elevate female athletes around the world.'

Netball Australia's chief executive, Stacey West, acknowledged the opportunities the new partnership would bring the league and netball more broadly.
'This breakthrough deal puts netball on screens across the globe and cements our place at the forefront of women's sport,' West said. 'AWSN shares our vision of taking women's sport to new heights. Together, we're creating a platform for our athletes and game to shine like never before.'
The response to the announcement was swift and positive, with former Diamond and AFLW player Sharni Layton commenting on Goldberg's video saying: 'This is next level. Netball is going [up].'
Netball Australia chair and former Diamond Liz Ellis shared the video, adding that Super Netball was 'going places'.
The partnership is inked through to 2027 and will result in 41 Super Netball matches being broadcast to the network's 900m-strong global audience. Other leagues featured on the network includes Australia's WNBL, as well as the WTA, Uefa Women's Nations League, Sweden's Damallsvenskan, European cricket, roller derby and softball.
The WNBL joined the AWSN in November 2024, with then league boss, Christy Collier-Hill, saying: 'Reaching fans globally and showcasing our incredible athletes, clubs, and competition is a major milestone for the league.'
It's a much needed win for Super Netball and Netball Australia, which have faced extensive off-court dramas in recent years, and will help to solidify the revival the sport is undergoing in Australia.
The partnership also points to the continued growth of women's sport, and the business opportunities it offers.

England v India: first men's cricket Test, day one

Update: Date: 2025-06-20T08:53:41.000Z Title: Ladies and Gentlemen of the class of '22 Content: (With apologies to Baz Lurhmann… and Baz McCullum) Wear suncream. If I could offer you only one tip for the next few days, suncream would be it. The long term benefits of suncream have been proved by scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience on the phenomenon some people call BazBall (and some people don't.) I will dispense this advice now Enjoy the power and beauty of this England Test side. Seriously. You will not see a team like this again. FACT. Trust me, in twenty years you'll look back at Ben Stokes and his crew and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much of a shot in the arm they've provided to Test cricket and to your viewing pleasure. How fabulous, exciting and yes, maddening they really were. Don't worry about the future; Australia. The Ashes. The Urn. Or, do worry about Pat Cummins bowling one of those impossibly jagging bail trimmers to Joe Root in December but know that worrying is as effective as trying to learn Mandarin by downing Guinness. The real troubles right now are Jasprit Bumrah, stuttering and scudding, blitzing away Zak Crawley's Teflon coating like a bullwhip power hose before the Western Terrace have even had their first slip of Tetley's. The strains of Jerusalem still wafting over Cardigan Lane. Do one thing every day that scares you Reverse-Ramp. Don't be reckless with your young spinner; make him feel twelve feet tall despite his county record. Don't bring mid-on up even when Rishabh Pant is going tonto. Scoop. Don't waste your time on the naysayers, the doubters 'the media agenda', sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind. Sometimes you'll declare a bit prematurely, sometimes you'll collapse in a stinking heap. The race is long, but the summer is short. Five Test's in seven weeks. You're entertainers. No more draws. But actually, maybe the odd draw? Only if you really need to, honestly, they're not so bad. Remember to be where your feet are. Head to the danger. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how Keep your vice-captain at number three. Put Jacob Bethell on ice until you need him. Stay humble Don't let Ben Duckett do too much press. Maybe Yashasvi Jaiswal isn't indebted or inspired by the way you play. Maybe he's on his own remarkable journey. Be smart. Reign it in a bit. Learn from those mistakes, the ones that got away. Edgbaston, Wellington, The Oval. Hamilton. Wear your bucket hats. Fine. But don't bring back 'The Sprinkler'. Say a prayer for Ben Stokes' knees. And his hamstrings. We'll miss them when they're gone. Maybe this mad lot will go down in history, maybe they won't Maybe they'll win the Ashes, they probably won't Maybe they'll keep going until 2030, that'd be fun. Maybe Jack Leach will come back and dive head first into another boundary hoarding? Maybe Chris Woakes will get the kudos he deserves? Maybe Mark Wood will bowl rockets and Jofra will be back for Lord's. Keep your field placings funky. Your choices are half chance; so are everybody else's. Don't be afraid of pensioning off your record breaking fast bowler. He was the greatest instrument you'll ever have but maybe the time was right. Switch bails. But only when you really need to. (Ask Stuart) Read the riot act, occasionally you might have to. Understand that teammates come and go, Alex Lees, Moeen Ali, Matthew Potts, Jonny Bairstow, Will Jacks, Rehan Ahmed, Liam Livingstone, Tom Hartley. They've all played a part. Remember Trent Bridge – 'Don't you dare try and hit one down' Remember Rawalpindi, Hyderabad and Old Trafford before the rain. God they were good. Accept certain inalienable truths, Ollie Pope will start skittishly, he'll also get a ton. Harry Brook will look a million dollars but find a way to get out in the most inexplicably ugly fashion. Stokes will try and bowl eight on the bounce when his dander is up, don't let him do this. Jamie Smith will launch one out of the ground. Brendon McCullum will sit on a balcony with shades on and trotters up. Inscrutable. Beard tapered as if he's leading a Cinch sponsored Armada. People will talk about golf. Don't expect summers like this to come around forever. Changes are needed. Maybe you'll be thrilled. Maybe you won't. Maybe you'll be glued to every ball or maybe you'll dip in and out as life intervenes. You know it'll be there though, humming away in the background, gripping you at times, leaving you in despair at others. Maybe you're amazed at the way you need this. Strap in, buckle up, most of all – enjoy the ride. But trust me on the suncream. (slip, slap, slop). Hello and welcome to the first Test match between England and India from Headingley. I've just disembarked from the Iron horse at Leeds station and am on the way to the ground. Play begins at 11am and the coin will be flipped at about 10.30am. Please do get in touch if you are tuning in. It promises to be a scorcher, in more ways than one.

Marnus Labuschagne axed by Australia after World Test Championship final defeat

Australia have dropped Marnus Labuschagne for next week's first Test against West Indies in Barbados with Sam Konstas and Josh Inglis coming into the batting line-up for the erstwhile opener and Steve Smith, who is injured. Labuschagne opened the batting in the World Test Championship final, contributing scores of 17 and 22 to Australia's cause as the defending champions lost to South Africa by five wickets. Smith dislocated his finger while fielding at Lord's, leaving a vacancy at the top of the batting order for the first match in the three-Test series in the Caribbean. "Steve needs more time for the wound to heal so we'll give him another week's rest and assess his functionality after that," head selector George Bailey said in a Cricket Australia statement. "We have made the decision to give Josh and Sam the opportunity to replace Steve and Marnus. We are excited to see them get the chance to further their fledgling Test careers." Both Konstas and Inglis have played two Tests, the former opening the batting against India in Melbourne and Sydney last season and the latter batting in the middle order in Sri Lanka earlier this year. Bailey said Labuschagne's Test career could be revived if he could rediscover the form that took him to the top of the world batting rankings in 2023. "Marnus at his best can be a really important member of this team. He understands his output hasn't been at the level we, or he, expects," he said. "We will continue working with him on the areas of his game we feel he needs to rediscover. We continue to value his skill and expect him to work through the challenge positively." The batting order for the first Test, which starts next Wednesday, will be determined closer to the game, Cricket Australia said. Australia also face West Indies in Grenada and Jamaica on the tour.

As for her musical buddy, who also works with her at Gold 104.3, Gareth wore a black jacket over a black shirt, unbuttoned to show a little bit of chest hair for the night out. However, it was Georgia's caption of the post which really raised eyebrows and sent tongues wagging. 'Your mum and dad had a midweek night out and sent a photo as proof,' she wrote across the picture while tagging Gareth. 'Just two people who have grown in different directions while still holding deep respect and care for each other.
