PM Modi To Lay Foundation For Phase-2 Of Varanasi-Kolkata Expressway Today

In a landmark move to boost infrastructure and connectivity in eastern India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone for the second phase of the Varanasi-Gaya-Ranchi-Kolkata Expressway (NH-319B) on Thursday, during his visit to Bihar.
This expressway, which is part of the Bharatmala Project, is a massive infrastructure initiative that promises to transform road travel and economic activity across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal.
The 690-kilometre-long expressway, with a width of 36 metres, will be Bihar's first six-lane greenfield expressway.
Starting from Barhauli near the Varanasi Ring Road in Uttar Pradesh, it will traverse through Kaimur, Rohtas, Aurangabad, and Gaya in Bihar before entering Jharkhand and continuing to Kolkata.
The expressway promises to halve travel time between Varanasi and Kolkata from 12-14 hours to just 6-7 hours.
The total estimated cost of the project is Rs 35,000 crore, with around Rs 5,994 crore allocated for Bihar alone, and Rs 1,200 crore earmarked for Gaya district.
In Gaya, the expressway will cut through the heavily forested and historically Naxal-affected blocks of Imamganj and Dumaria, covering 29 revenue villages (mauzas) across 33.5 kilometres.
The route includes Anwar Salaiya, Barha, Chhakarbandha, Tarchua, and Dhakpahari, areas that were once difficult to access due to insurgency.
A construction company from Rajasthan has begun setting up a work centre in Chhakarbandha forest and a project office in Baseta to oversee operations.
"Till just a decade ago, even common people hesitated to visit Chhakarbandha due to Naxalite dominance. Today, the expressway is a symbol of development reclaiming such regions," said a local resident, Rahul Manjhi, while noting the missed opportunity of not having an interchange point at Chhakarbandha itself.
Deepa Manjhi, MLA from Imamganj, hailed the project as a game-changer for traffic and economic growth.
"The expressway will improve inter-city connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, and boost freight movement. Industrial development will follow, generating employment and fostering economic prosperity," she said.

HP to charge ₹10 consultation fee from patients in govt hospitals
Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh govt has decided to charge a consultation fee of Rs 10 from all patients at the time of registration in govt hospitals across the state. In a step to strengthen the Rogi Kalyan Samitis across the state, the govt, on the recommendations of the cabinet sub-committee, has authorised Rogi Kalyan Samitis to levy user charges on a need basis. This decision was made to improve the services undertaken by Rogi Kalyan Samitis, including sanitation, hygiene, and maintenance of infrastructure and equipment. The govt's decision to charge Rs 10 as a consultation fee from patients has come under criticism from the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party in the state. Former chief minister and the leader of the opposition, Jai Ram Thakur, said on Wednesday that there is nothing left on earth that the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu-led Congress govt has not taxed. "When the central govt is providing free testing and treatment, why is the Sukhu govt taking it away?" questioned Thakur. The journey of this fee-imposing govt, which started with toilet tax, has now reached taxing the toilets and washrooms of hospitalised patients, quipped the leader of the opposition. The Sukhu govt has ordered the collection of money from every sick person who reaches the hospital for treatment in an emergency or helpless condition, he stated, adding that the govt must revoke this order at the earliest.

Salaries rebound at top campuses: MBA, BTech offers up after 2024 slump
ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT The Class of 2025 has higher salary offers across top campuses after a flat 2024, signalling a pickup in hiring activity, according to the Deloitte Campus Workforce Trends: Placement Cycle 2025 report, which analysed placements across 508 salaries for MBAs and BTechs are expected to rise 8.3% and 4.3% year-on-year, respectively, after declining 9% and 0.1% in 2024. At the top 10 MBA colleges (according to NIRF rankings), the median package is set to touch Rs 26 lakh per annum in 2025, up from Rs 24 lakh last year. For the top 10 BTech colleges, it's Rs 17 lakh, up from Rs 16.3 lakh in report attributes the uptick to pent-up demand after last year's muted hiring, sharper skill-based recruitment, and attrition confirmed the trend. 'Average salary has risen, and this growth is largely driven by expanding opportunities in highgrowth sectors such as private equity, renewable energy and healthcare,' Himanshu Rai, director of Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Indore, told highlighted a significant rise in the variable pay component, particularly in consulting and finance roles, which reflects performance-linked structures and sector-specific Ahmedabad, the country's leading management institute, is in the process of consolidating data from the previous placement cycle audited, its placement committee chairperson Viswanath Pingali said. Cabinet nod for Quantum Mission in Amaravati capital
Vijayawada: The state Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday, accorded approval to the establishment of state Quantum Mission to fuel the growth of the information technology sector in Amaravati greenfield capital. Announcing this at a press conference at the Secretariat after the Cabinet meeting, Information and Public Relations Minister K Parthasarathy said the Cabinet had given consent to the Quantum Mission proposed by the Department of IT, Electronics and Communications as part of India's National Quantum Mission (NQM). A Quantum Valley, which will be set up in the capital city, will promote research in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cyber security in partnership with TCS, IIT-Madras and IBM to attract world class researchers. The minister said Naidu aims to make Amaravati number one in quantum computing and added that India is currently at the sixth position in this segment in the world while AP is on top within India. "In future, Andhra Pradesh will be on top in the world in quantum computing. From schools to universities, all of them will be involved in training," he said. Parthasarathy said the government formed a committee of experts on quantum computing and noted that 50 acres of land has been allocated in Amaravati for Quantum Valley development. Further, the minister said the Cabinet gave its nod for viability gap funding of Rs 57 crore and Rs 82 crore for drinking water projects at Uddhanam in Srikakulam district and Kuppam in Chittoor district respectively. The Cabinet also approved the promotion of 248 Andhra Pradesh Special Police (APSP) constables as head constables in the department. The Cabinet also approved the Home Department's proposals for the release of 17 life-term prisoners. For the establishment of Andhra Pradesh Police Academy, the Cabinet approved the free transfer of government land in Eluru district to the Home Department. Similarly, the Cabinet greenlighted the Health and Family Welfare Department's proposals to achieve a world record on International Yoga Day on June 21. Moreover, the Cabinet approved the Industries Department's proposal to set up one MSME park per assembly constituency, totalling 175 across the state as part of 'One Family, One Entrepreneur' programme, among others. Further, administrative approvals included the formalisation of the YSR district's name change to YSR Kadapa district. Earlier, the Cabinet extended congratulations to the Chief Minister Naidu for the successful implementation of several welfare schemes in the past year.
