Anca Mateiu wins Emirates Golf Club's Ladies Club Championship with a flurry of birdies

Khaleej Times25-02-2025

Anca Mateiu delivered a commanding performance to claim the Emirates Golf Club Ladies Club Championship, lighting up both rounds with a dazzling display of birdies.
The championship teed off on the Faldo Course before shifting to the Majlis Course, where gusty winds added an extra layer of challenge. Despite the tricky conditions, Mateiu remained composed, carding rounds of 70 and 76 to finish with a total of 146 (+2), comfortably securing the title.
Mateiu set the tone early in round one, firing a birdie on the second hole and adding two more at holes 7 and 9. She carried her momentum into the back nine, sinking further birdies at holes 10, 14, and 18 to finish with a stunning 70.
Round two presented a tougher test as she stumbled out of the gate with back-to-back bogeys. But the resilient Mateiu bounced back with a birdie at the 7th, keeping her game steady with crucial pars on 10 and 11. A bogey on 12 threatened to derail her charge, but she responded in style, picking up birdies on 15 and 17 to seal a well-earned victory.
Battle for Second Place
Jayshree Gupta took runner-up honours, carding rounds of 80 and 78 for a total of 158 (+14). She started strong on the Faldo Course with a birdie at hole 1 but encountered turbulence on holes 6, 7, and 8. However, she steadied herself on the back nine to close out her round with an 80.
In round two, Gupta made an early birdie on hole 2 but dropped a shot on the very next hole. A late surge saw her roll in consecutive birdies on holes 10 and 11, cementing her second-place finish.
Nonita's Steady Play Secures Third
Rounding out the podium was Nonita Chand, a key player for The A Team in the recent Ultimate Golf Challenge Season 2.
Nonita returned consistent scores of 80 and 81, finishing with a total of 161 (+17). Her first round saw a rocky start with a bogey at hole 1, but she recovered well with three straight pars. A series of bogeys on holes 5, 6, and 7 threatened to slow her down, yet she remained composed, posting a solid 40 on the back nine.
Her second round was highlighted by an impressive finish, playing the last four holes at one under par, a testament to her perseverance under pressure.
Net 36-Hole Champions Shine
In the Silver Division (handicap +3.5 to 11.5), Shiba Wahid stormed to victory with rounds of 73 and 68, finishing at 141 (-3 net). A net eagle on hole 14 and back-to-back net birdies on 15 and 17 in round one positioned her well. She carried that momentum into round two, carding net birdies on holes 3, 4, 10, and 12 before capping it off with a net eagle on 16.
The Bronze Division (handicap 12-36) title went to Emirates Golf Club Lady Captain Josie Tracey, who also posted a winning total of 141 (-3 net). Tracey's tournament was highlighted by a fast start with a net eagle on hole 1 and a clutch performance on the back nine in round two, where she collected five net birdies.

The competition saw several standout performances across both rounds:
Best Gross Round 1: Chitose Okada (78, +6) – A rock-solid front nine saw her string together seven consecutive pars before closing with a bogey on 9.
Best Gross Round 2: Arathi Appaiah (82, +10) – A challenging front nine was followed by a stellar comeback, shooting 39 on the back, including a birdie at 16.

From Speed to Swing: Trailblazing golfer-racer Bao drives Legends Tour back home

For Nguyễn Gia Bảo, golf has always been more than a game. It's a way to stay rooted in her heritage, dream beyond borders, and inspire change - especially for the next generation of players. This November, all those threads will come together in one powerful moment as Vietnam prepares to host one of the most prestigious senior golf events in the world: the Legends Championship Vietnam 2025. The European Senior Tour event for professionals aged 50 and over returns to Vietnam from 28–30 November, two years after its inaugural staging in Southeast Asia. Bao played a key role in helping bring the tournament back to her home country, working closely with the Legends Tour team from her base in Dubai to support its return. While Bao originally came to support the event in 2023, she unexpectedly found herself on the course, playing alongside the very legends she once admired from afar. 'I was just there to meet the legends,' she recalls. 'Then suddenly, I was offered a slot by the President of the Legends Tour himself... Honestly, I was afraid — my handicap was higher, and I felt pressure representing Vietnam on a live global stage. But their belief in me gave me the courage to say yes.' That moment, playing alongside major champions and Ryder Cup icons, was a turning point. But for Bao, who has spent over 17 years in the game, it was also a continuation of a lifelong journey. A Dubai-based entrepreneur and passionate sportswoman, Bao plays her golf at the Emirates Golf Club, where she continues to compete in regional amateur events. She is also the founder of The Golf House Vietnam, an academy focused on developing grassroots golf in her home country, which she plans to open in Dubai in the future. Bao the Trailblazer Beyond golf, Bao is a trailblazer. She became Vietnam's first female professional race car driver, representing the country at the FIA Motorsport Games in France in 2022 - a remarkable pivot from her early fear of speed to competing internationally in a male-dominated sport. Her journey began as a personal challenge, evolving into professional training across Europe and the U.S., and eventually reaching the global stage. 'If you want to be a warrior, then be a warrior,' she says. 'You just need the will inside you. Golf can teach you that kind of strength.' Her golfing resume includes standout victories at the Mercedes Championship Vietnam in 2013 and 2016, and a divisional win at the World Mercedes British Open in 2017. Most recently, she finished Top 3 in the Best Amateur category at the 2023 Legends event. Bao's vision for Vietnam's golfing future is shaped by her wide-ranging experiences - from her years on the fairways to breaking barriers on the racetrack. With success in business, including ventures in leather footwear and furniture export, she exemplifies the kind of multidimensional resilience she hopes to pass on. 'I want to help create golfers with the spirit of warriors - not just technique, but the perseverance and mindset to succeed. That's how we grow the game in Vietnam,' she concludes.

One Shot at a Time: Anca Matheiu's journey from Tiny Tot to chasing big dreams in Dubai

At just 16, Anca Mateiu is living a golfing journey that many only dream of. Born and raised in Romania, now thriving in the UAE, her story is powered by raw talent, deep passion, and an unshakable ambition. It all began when she was just three or four years old when her father placed a golf club—two sizes too big—into her tiny hands and encouraged her to give it a try. "They were regular clubs, too big to handle but I felt a spark and everything just went from there," she recalls with a smile. That first swing marked the start of something special. 'In the beginning, it was about playing for my dad because he got me into it. That was important to me.' That early start laid the groundwork for where she is today. Anca is the 2025 Ladies Club Champion at Emirates Golf Club, proudly represents the UAE National Team on international stages like the Pan Arab and GCC Championships. She's also the 2021 Romanian National Junior Girls Champion—a nod to her roots and a reflection of how far she's come. Thriving on Dubai Fairways But it's her time in Dubai that has truly accelerated her growth. 'It's been life-changing,' she says. 'In Romania, I didn't have the opportunity to play that much golf. But over here in Dubai, I've really been able to play the game as much as I can.' The access to world-class facilities, experienced coaches like Marion Duvernay and the ability to train all year round have all contributed to shaping her game. Anca trains across three premier courses—Emirates, Jumeirah, and Dubai Hills—while balancing her studies at Kings' School, practice, and tournaments. Though the schedule is demanding, she remains grounded. 'I try not to think too much on the course. I just take it one shot at a time and stay in the moment,' she explains. 'If I get ahead of myself, things don't happen the way I want them to. So I always focus on my routine and aim for the best possible outcome.' This mindset, along with her unwavering work ethic, has set her apart—not just as a talented golfer, but as someone deeply passionate about the sport asshe pursues her aspirations 'I'd love to turn pro. It's been my dream,' she says with conviction. 'I want to play golf for the rest of my life.' Pathway to Turning Pro Her goal is to join the LET Access Tour, and with the continued support of the Emirates Golf Federation (EGF), she hopes that day will come sooner rather than later. Anca holds deep appreciation for those who have championed her journey, especially General Abdullah Alhashmi, Vice Chairman of the EGF. 'He's been incredible,' she says. 'The support from him and the EGF has helped me focus and improve. It's made a huge difference.' When asked where her allegiance lies—Romania or the UAE—Anca responds thoughtfully. While she hasn't made a definitive decision about which country she wants to represent long-term, she shares that her ties to both are meaningful. 'More UAE right now,' she says. To young girls in the Middle East dreaming of a golfing future, Anca has a clear message: 'There's so much on offer in Dubai. If you're serious about golf, you have to devote a lot of time to practice. As cheesy as it sounds—try to get one percent better every day. Stay focused, keep practicing, and improvement will come.' Family Keeps Her Grounded But more than that, she emphasizes the value of having a solid support system. 'You need people around you who understand what you want from the game. When you don't play well, or things don't go your way, your team—especially your family—is what keeps you going.' Anca Matheiu is not just one of the UAE's finest young golfers—she's a symbol of what passion and purpose can achieve. With her eyes set on a professional career and a heart full of dreams, every shot she takes now feels like a step toward the future she's always imagined—living her dream on the Pro Tour.
