Reports Of Restrictions On Indians Travelling To Saudi Arabia 'Incorrect': Govt Sources

Reports emerged that Saudi Arabia had temporarily suspended block work visas for a dozen countries, including India
The Ministry of External Affairs has dismissed reports about any restrictions on Indians travelling to Saudi Arabia, according to MEA sources.
'The Saudi Government has not issued any notification on this matter. As a matter of practice, during the Hajj season, temporary restrictions are imposed on short-term visas to prevent overcrowding, which will end with the conclusion of Hajj," sources added.
Earlier in the day, reports emerged that Saudi Arabia had temporarily suspended block work visas for a dozen countries, including India. However, the decision has been in effect since May 2025 and is being attributed to security and administrative concerns, particularly in light of pilgrim management and immigration compliance during the busy Hajj period. The travel ban will be in place till June 30.
What Is Hajj?
The Hajj is an annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, undertaken by millions of Muslims from around the world to perform sacred rituals that date back to the time of Prophet Mohammad, over 1,400 years ago.
Recognized as the fifth pillar of Islam, the Hajj is a religious obligation that must be fulfilled at least once in a lifetime by every physically and financially capable Muslim. It represents one of the most profound expressions of Islamic devotion and unity. Since the Islamic calendar follows a lunar system, the timing of Hajj—as well as Ramadan—shifts each year on the Gregorian (solar) calendar.
To manage the influx of pilgrims, a quota system was established in 1987 by member nations of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, capping the number of pilgrims from each country at 0.1% of its population.
The pilgrimage concludes with Eid al-Adha, one of the two major Islamic festivals, during which Muslims honor Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God. The ritual includes animal sacrifice, with a portion of the meat often distributed to those in need.
