Ecuador says 11 troops killed in attack by Farc dissidents

QUITO : Ecuador said today that at least 11 military personnel who were carrying out an operation to combat illegal mining in a region near the border with Colombia were killed by dissident Farc guerrillas.
Some armed factions within Farc, once the largest guerrilla group in Latin America, have rejected its historic peace agreement made with the Colombian government in 2016.
Those splinter groups refuse to lay down their arms and pursue criminal activities like illegal drug trafficking and illegal mining.
'Eleven soldiers have been killed and one wounded,' the Ecuadoran military said in a statement.
It said that dozens of military personnel had been involved in the operation and that the 'ambush' had been carried out with explosives, grenades and firearms.
The office of the prosecutor, which earlier gave a toll of eight dead, said a criminal group called the Comandos de la Frontera was responsible for the attack in the eastern province of Orellana.
The group is involved in drug trafficking in the border region of Colombia and Ecuador.
The prosecutor's statement added that work had begun to 'recover the bodies and secure evidence' at the site of the attack.
'We will not rest until those responsible are judged before the law and are held accountable for this crime,' the military said in its statement.
Once-peaceful Ecuador averaged a killing every hour at the start of the year, as cartels battled for control over cocaine routes that pass through the nation's ports.
The bloodshed has spooked investors and tourists alike, fuelling economic malaise and swelling the ranks of Ecuador's poor to 28% of the population.
In Colombia, the Comandos de la Frontera are engaged in peace negotiations with authorities.
The US is seeking the extradition of the group's detained leader, Colombian officials have said.

Justice Jamil Hussin said the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case on both charges as it was unable to prove all elements of the offences with credible evidence. 'The prosecution failed to prove that Yusoff had knowledge, custody and control of the drugs and fake pistols. 'The accused is acquitted and discharged without being called to enter his defence,' Jamil said after hearing oral submissions. Yusoff was accused of trafficking in 305g of cannabis found in his vehicle when it was parked in front of the Kuala Lumpur police surau at 10.15am on Sept 6, 2024. The drugs were allegedly wrapped in a black plastic bag. He was also charged with possessing fake pistols outside the Senada Condominium on Jalan Bukit Kiara at 9.25am the same day. The fake firearms possession charge, under Section 36(1) of the Arms Act 1960, carried a maximum penalty of one year in prison, a fine of up to RM5,000, or both, upon conviction. The drug trafficking charge, framed under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, provided for the death penalty or 30 years' imprisonment as well as a whipping of not less than 12 lashes. Yusoff's defence was that the drugs and pistols were planted to frame him. He was held at the Sungai Buloh prison as bail is not allowed for those charged with drug trafficking. Jamil, who is scheduled to retire in November, also said the two investigating officers failed to investigate Yusoff's claim, made to the recording officer during detention, that he was a victim of entrapment by a certain individual. 'The police officers had ample time to verify his statement but did not do so,' he said, adding that this had prejudiced the accused. Deputy public prosecutors Sabri Othman, Shahrizzat Amadan, and R Haravind appeared for the prosecution. Lawyers Rafique Rashid Ali, Gurdial Singh Nijar, Nurmustanir Nor, and Amirul Ar-Rashid Azman acted for Yusoff.

Teens killed in car-motorbike crash in Temerloh

(PDRM pic) PETALING JAYA : Two teenage girls were killed after the motorcycle they were on was hit by a car at a traffic light junction on Jalan Tengku Ismail in Temerloh, Pahang, last night. Temerloh police chief Mazlan Hassan said Nur Irdina Shaffiya Nazri and Aneez Irdiena Sofya Khairul Azman, both 18, died on the spot in the 11pm accident. Mazlan said an inspection of the car involved in the crash uncovered plastic packets suspected to contain methamphetamine and heroin, estimated to be worth over RM6,000. He said the 38-year-old driver from Kepong, Kuala Lumpur, had been detained for further investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug trafficking. 'Preliminary investigations found that the two were travelling in the direction of Mentakab towards the Bukit Angin roundabout. 'When they stopped at a red light, a Perodua Bezza allegedly rammed into the back of their motorcycle,' Bernama reported him as saying. Mazlan said their bodies were taken to Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Hospital in Temerloh for a post-mortem.

Johor Customs foil drug syndicate's RM1m smuggling attempt via courier service
JOHOR BARU, June 12 — The Johor Customs Department has uncovered an international drug syndicate's tactic of using courier services to smuggle narcotics from Hong Kong to Malaysia, seizing nearly RM1 million worth of drugs. Johor Customs Department director Aminul Izmeer Mohd Sohaimi said the bust was made after enforcement officers inspected two suspicious parcels at a Pos Laju office here on April 23. 'An inspection of the parcels revealed a white bottle containing black liquid, which tested positive for morphine. The liquid weighed 10.194 kilogrammes and had an estimated street value of RM955,687,' he said at a press conference at Menara Kastam here today. Aminul Izmeer said investigations revealed the parcels had been sent from Hong Kong to a two-storey terrace house in Pulai, Johor. However, the owner of the house and the individuals involved are still under investigation. He added that the syndicate had disguised the drugs as candy and placed them in black liquid bottles to evade detection. 'This is a major success for the Johor Customs Department this year. We will continue to intensify inspections of suspicious parcels at all entry points, including courier centres,' he said. The case is being investigated under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug trafficking.
