Deadly Tornadoes Leave Large Path Of Destruction Across The South: Here's How To Help

Yahoo17-03-2025

A massive outbreak of severe weather over several days that yielded several tornadoes has now left at least 37 dead in 7 states. Communities across the country, including in Texas, Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and more suffered extensive damage and are now beginning to pick up the pieces.
David Nussbaum, Chief Meteorologist for CBS 42 in Birmingham was live on air, guiding his community as the dangerous weather approached and then as it wreaked havoc across the state of Alabama for hours.
He spoke to Southern Living on Sunday and said, 'In the wake of these storms, the weather turns pleasant with sunshine, low humidity, and cooler temperatures. In a strange way, this makes for good storm clean up weather.'
He continued, 'The aftermath calls for significant help cleaning up the impacted communities. A call for helping hands to dig through debris, chainsaws and bulldozers and other heavy equipment, help with making insurance claims, financial help for those without adequate insurance, food for everyone impacted, places to stay for those now without a home, and prayer.'
Just as Nussbaum said, the skies are now clear and the helpers have already begun to reach out their hands in these hard hit communities. Below are some of our suggestions of vetted organizations already on the ground doing the work. If you are able, here is how you can help their efforts.
The American Red Cross had local teams across the impacted region before the storms even hit. Now, these teams are actively helping those impacted by opening shelters and providing vital supplies to those who need it.

Erin Napier shared an update from her friend and the co-owner of Laurel Mercantile, Mallorie Raspberry. The post stated that Laurel Mercantile is partnering with Jones County Baptist Disaster Relief to collect supplies and monetary donations. This drive will directly benefit those in the hardest hit towns in Mississippi, Tylertown and Taylorsville. For those who are local to Laurel or close enough to drop off supplies, both Laurel Mercantile and Scotsman General Store are collecting donations of supplies. The needs include bottled water, garbage bags, diapers, cleaning supplies, paper products, and more. You can see the complete list in the post below.
If you cannot physically drop off goods, you can also help by making monetary donations via Venmo (@JCBA_Pay) or by mailing checks to:

Virginia-based Mercy Chefs announced Sunday evening that they were deploying to hard hit Tylertown, Mississippi, and the surrounding counties to 'serve hot, chef-prepared meals to those without power and displaced by the storm. Your support is vital in helping us bring hope and nourishment to those who have lost everything.'

Also on the ground to serve up warm, satisfying, and distinctly Southern meals of comfort, Missouri based Operation BBQ Relief have deployed a team to Cave City, Arkansas. This group of philanthropic pitmasters are asking not only for monetary donations but for local volunteers as well.

This is a developing story.

Boise housing organization seeks donations for people experiencing homelessness in summer heat

CATCH is a Boise-based nonprofit housing organization that seeks to end homelessness in the Treasure Valley. (File photo courtesy of CATCH) With the onset of summer heat, a Boise-based housing organization is asking the public to donate emergency summer supplies to be distributed to people experiencing homelessness in Ada County. The Boise nonprofit CATCH is seeking donations of sports drinks, reusable water bottles, socks, sleeping bags, sunblock, bug spray, bicycle lights, underwear and hygiene items for its 'Beat the summer heat' campaign, CATCH Outreach Team Lead Connor O'Hora said. SUBSCRIBE: GET THE MORNING HEADLINES DELIVERED TO YOUR INBOX CATCH's outreach team spends three days a week traveling through Ada County by bicycle and van delivering supplies to people experiencing homelessness. 'We've already broken the record and hit 100 degrees in May in Idaho, so we can expect a hot summer where people will be struggling with heat-related illnesses,' O'Hora said in a phone interview Tuesday. 'As we make contact, we want to be able to offer people something to keep cool and safe while they get started in the direction they feel is appropriate.' CONTACT US O'Hora said many of the items CATCH is seeking for donations can help people and families endure short-term hardships as they work with CATCH team members to get connected to additional support services like shelters, health care facilities and food banks. With summer coming, O'Hora said the need is great and the population of people experiencing homelessness in the Treasure Valley is on the rise. More than 1,800 households are experiencing homelessness in the Treasure Valley, CATCH estimates. The group defines households as any of the nonprofit's clients who are seeking to live together, including traditional families, single parents, individuals and couples. Last year, CATCH ended homelessness for a record 486 people, including 223 children and 114 families, he said. 'There is a great need, and we are seeing our population growing in key demographics,' O'Hora said. 'We see our population is aging and many folks who are living in their vehicles or are staying outside had been renting for five, 10 or even 15 years and then they got priced out of their housing or it was sold to a different property management company.' To donate, people may: Drop off donations at the CATCH office at 503. S. Americana Blvd., in Boise from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. Purchase items online through CATCH's Amazon wish list. Visit to make a financial donation. SUPPORT: YOU MAKE OUR WORK POSSIBLE

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Wind and rain brought a temporary respite from the blazing sun Sunday. The weather also made for some interesting cloud formations (below). The precipitation temporarily interrupted the North American sand Soccer Championships taking place at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. The games were delayed for about an hour, between 4 p.m. and 5:10 p.m., according to . If you'd like to share your weather photos with us, please visit our Report It page. WAVY meteorologist Don Slater breaks down how it all played out: As expected, an active low pressure system (a mini-cyclone) moved eastward from halfway across the U.S. to get us this morning. We had numerous severe thunderstorm warnings from 5:47am to 9:45am, but damage appears to be limited to trees and power lines down. That damage was mostly in Southampton County, VA. Though we did see tree and power line damage in southern Chesapeake. After some quiet time in the late morning and early afternoon, it was also expected that we could see some severe weather in the afternoon. And though the thunderstorms were more widely scattered, we did get some damage to trees in James City County. As of 9:00 pm, more thunderstorms are approaching from the west…especially for areas from the Peninsula and northward. While these storms have not had an immediate history of producing damage, we are watchful just in case they flare up as they move eastward into the area. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
