Altamont city council discusses current and future projects
ALTAMONT – Illinois will remove its 1% grocery tax in January 2026. Municipalities will have the authority to replace that tax, which is what the Altamont City council recently discussed and plans to do.
Instead of the tax money going to the state, it will be going back into the city's general fund.
'It'll just shift,' said City Clerk Sarah Stephen. 'Instead of being dispersed between several different entities, it will all come to the city now.'
The council also approved a $12,700 payment to Courts and Cracks to repaint Nori's Yard Multi-Use Court which will also include a new basketball goal similar to the ones in Gilbert Park.
'It looks very nice,' said Mayor Mike Walker. 'I look forward to everyone using that this summer.'
'I just want to thank … the community team members that raised the money to do this,' said City Commissioner Tayler Polk. 'Looks excellent. There's kids there all the time. Mine, as well.'

Milano & Grunloh Owner and Project Manager Lee Beckman updated the council on some projects in progress around town.
When the new sidewalks are installed along Main Street, they will be 1.5 times bigger than the previous ones and ADA compliant.
Beckman is also planning an Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program project to upgrade lighting, boulevards and sidewalks along both sides of Main Street from the railroad tracks to Route 40.
Effingham County Recovery Oriented Systems of Care Coordinator Samantha Hicks informed the council of how ROSC works with individuals and families that suffer from substance use disorder and mental health disorders.
'One of our main focuses for this fiscal year is to reach the smaller villages outside of Effingham City because that city has a good abundance of resources,' said Hicks. 'But the villages outside of Effingham City face different barriers as far as long-term recovery, sobriety and mental health issues.'
Hicks wants to support the people that need those types of services and connect them with support.
The council also approved the sale of 107 North Main Street which was a continuation of the tabled item from August when the council wasn't full.
The city sold the vacant property to RDM Designs Custom Cabinetry & Flooring so they can expand the business to the north.
The next Altamont City Council meeting is scheduled for June 9 at 6 p.m. at the municipal building.

MOUNT CARMEL, Ky. (WEHT) — The Mount Carmel Pool has been a staple in the community dating back to 1936. Now almost 90 years later the old pool is being demolished and a new pool is being built. Mayor Joe Judge says a big problem arose last year when the main filter bed imploded causing 35,000 gallons of water to leak a day. 'To keep the pool open last summer, we had to put a lot of chlorine in it at a very high expense and the state came in and said we would not be able to reopen in 2025, unless we made all the improvements they had been talking about,' said Judge. Those improvements include fixing electrical problems, becoming ADA compliant, upgrades to the chemical room, and everything else that had to be brought up to code. The city council took a vote making the decision that it would be in the best interest of the taxpayers to build a new pool. 'We told the engineering company we wanted something you know, iconic to replace the pool that we have and they've come up with something that we think will be a hit with not only our community, but with other communities in the area,' said Judge. While the final renderings have not been released, Mayor Judge says the new facility will have aquatic features not seen in the area. 'It'll have the six swim lanes for competition swim,' said Judge. 'It will have several aquatic features that no other pool in the area has, which we're pretty excited about…and you know, one of the big things everybody loves about you know, our iconic pool that we have, is the beach. You know, being able it's a bowl style and we will still have that functionality with the new pool.' Contractors arrived on site today and the entire process should only take up to 2025 days. Elsmere city councilwoman resigns after alleged misconduct and missed meetings
Hours before her fate as a council member was set to be determined at a June 4 meeting, an Elsmere city councilwoman resigned from her position effective immediately, according to an email sent to The Enquirer and other city council members. Serena Owen, who was serving her second term on Elsmere's city council submitted her letter of resignation after months during which she was accused of misconduct and missed meetings. "I am writing to formally submit my resignation from my position as a Councilwoman for the City of Elsmere, effective immediately," Owen wrote. "This decision has not been made lightly but is necessitated by the escalating challenges that have profoundly impacted my ability to serve effectively and safely," Owen said her resignation comes as a result of her fear of being shot at a public meeting by a man she claims has harassed her online, and her "repeated and justified requests for a minimal inexpensive ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) hybrid video teleconference accommodation to attend council meetings virtually (free Zoom/Teams link)" being dismissed. In March, the six-member Elsmere City Council unanimously voted to begin proceedings to remove Owen from office. Since then, they've announced seven charges against her including willful negligence and misconduct. A public meeting was set to be held June 4 from 6-7 p.m. to discuss the removal of Owen from her position on the council. The Enquirer reached out to the City of Elsmere's city clerk Katie Hehman, who declined to confirm the resignation. However, San Francisco was forced to make a roster move after placing one of its relief pitchers on the injury list. Advertisement Reports indicate that relief pitcher Jordan Hicks is being placed on the IL with a toe injury, according to Susan Slusser of The San Francisco Chronicle. The 28-year-old pitcher is officially on the 15-day IL for the Giants. Sean Hjelle is being recalled to take his spot in the bullpen. '[Jordan] Hicks to the IL with a toe injury, [Sean] Hjelle recalled.' It hasn't been the best season for Hicks so far. He's largely struggled on the mound, whether he's playing as a starter or coming out of the bullpen. An injury isn't ideal, however, it could give Hicks the time he needs to re-focus and become a more consistent option for the Giants. Between his nine starts this season, along with some appearances coming out of the bullpen, Hicks owns a 6.47 ERA and 1.541 WHIP while recording 43 strikeouts through 48.2 innings pitched. Advertisement The Giants are in the thick of the playoff race, as they are only three games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers. San Francisco has an opportunity to climb the NL West rankings if the team can manage to go 3-1 in the series against the Padres. San Diego took the first matchup with a 1-0 win on Monday evening. But the Giants didn't go down without a fight. The game went into extra innings, and it just so happened that San Diego managed to score in the 10th inning. We'll see what San Francisco can do on Tuesday after switching things up in the bullpen. The Giants are set to face off against the Padres at 9:45 p.m. EST. Landen Roupp is slated to start on the mound for San Francisco.
