15-hour flights to nowhere and over 160 diversions: How Iran's strike on a US air base upended aviation
A Qantas flight that returned to Australia after 15 hours in the air was one of over 160 diversions following Iran's strike on a US air base in Qatar on Monday.
Flight 33 departed Perth around 8 p.m. local time on Monday and was supposed to land in Paris the following morning.
However, seven hours after takeoff, the Boeing 787 U-turned over the Indian Ocean. It landed back in Perth around 11 a.m. local time the next day.
Another Qantas flight, from Perth to London, diverted to Singapore in a 12-hour ordeal.
In a statement on X, the airline cited "additional airspace closures and congestion through the Middle East."
Qatar closed its airspace shortly before Iran launched missiles toward the Al Udeid Air Base, in retaliation for the US bombing some of its nuclear facilities on Saturday.
The region was already home to some of the world's most congested airspace before Iran, Iraq, and Israel closed their airspace on June 13, forcing detours.
Kuwait, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates also briefly closed their airspace on Monday night.
Air India, which, like Qantas, frequently flies over the Middle East, announced Monday that it had ceased all operations to the region, Europe, and the east coast of North America. It said Tuesday it would "progressively resume" flights.
Meanwhile, carriers in the region, such as Qatar Airways and Emirates, operate huge hubs that connect passengers across the globe.
Dubai is home to the world's busiest airport for international traffic, while Doha's is the 10th busiest.
Using flight-tracking data, Business Insider found over 160 flights that were forced to land at a different airport due to the incident.
The majority of those, more than 100, were supposed to land at Doha's Hamad International Airport.
A Qatar Airways flight from Barcelona spent six hours in the air before going back after turning round over Turkey. Another one from London Heathrow landed back in the British capital after nearly seven hours.
Monday night's disruption not only affected the passengers on board but also caused dozens of airplanes to be left out of place, delaying future flights.
For example, Qatar Airways Flight 706 departed New York but had to divert to Medina in Saudi Arabia after 15 hours. It eventually continued to Doha, six-and-a-half hours behind schedule.
A Xiamen Airlines flight from Beijing U-turned over Pakistan and diverted to China's Xinjiang region in a nine-hour ordeal.
According to data from FlightAware, 43% of flights leaving Dubai and 24% of those leaving Doha were delayed on Monday.
Israel and Iran negotiated a cease-fire overnight, easing tensions, though Israel on Tuesday morning accused Iran of breaking the cease-fire, which Tehran denied.

Amid rising tensions in the Middle East, one major airline canceled all flights to and from the East Coast of the United States and Canada. "We request the understanding of all passengers who may be affected by this disruption that's beyond an airline's control. Air India is in continuous consultation with its external security advisors and is vigilantly monitoring the evolving situation. We will keep our passengers informed of any updates. The safety and security of our passengers and staff remain our number one priority," the airline said. Just a day later, Air India revealed it plans to resume flights to certain parts of the Middle East on June 25, while flight to and from Europe are being reinstated on June 24. UK calls China a major challenge but an essential economic partner
LONDON (AP) — China's attempts to spy, destabilize and disrupt Britain's economy and democracy have grown, but Beijing is still a vital economic partner for the U.K., the government said Tuesday. Foreign Secretary David Lammy said 'China's power is an inescapable fact' and freezing relations with the world's second biggest economy is 'not an option.' He spoke to lawmakers as he outlined findings from the government's 'China audit.' 'China is our third biggest trading partner, our universities' second largest source of international students. China will continue to play a vital role in supporting the U.K.'s secure growth,' Lammy said. The Labour Party government pledged to conduct an in-depth examination of U.K.-China relations after it was elected almost a year ago, in an effort to balance the country's economic interests and its security. Many details of the review will remain classified for security reasons, Lammy said. Its conclusions were summarized in a document outlining the U.K. government's broader national security strategy. It said that 'instances of China's espionage, interference in our democracy and the undermining of our economic security have increased in recent years.' Yet the government resisted pressure from China hawks in Parliament to label China a threat on a par with Russia. The security review called it a 'geostrategic challenge' but also an essential player in tackling major issues such as climate change, global health and economic stability. 'We will seek a trade and investment relationship that supports secure and resilient growth, and boosts the U.K. economy,' the government said. 'Yet there are several major areas, such as human rights and cybersecurity, where there are stark differences and where continued tension is likely.' Opposition Conservative Party foreign affairs spokeswoman Priti Patel said the government was showing 'signs of naivety' about China. Another Conservative lawmaker, Harriet Cross, branded Beijing 'at best unreliable and at worst hostile.' U.K.-China relations have chilled since the short-lived 'golden era' announced by then-Prime Minister David Cameron in 2015, after a series of spying and cyberespionage allegations, Beijing's crackdown on civil liberties in Hong Kong, a former British colony, and China's support for Russia in the Ukraine war. There was no immediate comment from China on the review. China was one of many challenges identified in a review that the government said marked 'a hardening and a sharpening of our approach to national security' in an increasingly dangerous world. Prime Minister Keir Starmer's government has pledged, along with other NATO members, to increase spending on security to 5% of gross domestic product by 2035. The total includes 3.5% on defense and 1.5% on broader security and resilience. The U.K. currently spends 2.3% of national income on defense and says that will rise to 2.6% by 2027.
