Celtic star stunned by Rangers legend in red-faced return to action against minnows
Alistair Johnston has back on the grass for Canada after missing his crucial spot kick at Hampden against Aberdeen
Alistair Johnston had another nightmare on his return to action as 77-year-old former Rangers boss Dick Advocaat pulled off a shock against Canada.
The Hoops defender missed the crucial final penalty in the Scottish Cup Final which meant Aberdeen won the trophy at Hampden last month.
He was nursing a minor back injury and recently tied the knot with new wife Peyton before heading off on honeymoon to St Lucia.
But it was on another Caribbean he returned to action this weekend at the Gold Cup against minnows Curacao, who are now managed by Advocaat, after he came out of retirement for the fifth time to take charge of his eighth international country earlier this year.
But after coming on as a late sub, he gave the ball away to former PSV Eindhoven striker Jeremy Antonisse deep into injury time who netted to claim a remarkable 1-1 draw in Houston and kick off off scenes of celebration for the tiny nation.
Advocaat - who has now managed the Netherlands three times, Belgium, Russia, Serbia, South Korea, Iraq, UAE and now Curacao - said: "That was a great achievement for us to get a draw against a huge country like Canada. But it was the least we deserved and credit to the players."
Canada had gone ahead inside the opening 10 minutes thanks to Nathan Saliba's early strike but Antonisse grabbed a goal in the fouth minute of added time to spark wild scenes.
The result leaves Canada top of the section with four points from two games and Curacao currently sit third with two points on the board. They trail Honduras in second spot in the section by a point.

Kris Boyd on what happens after Rangers rows with Celtic hero Chris Sutton once Sky Sports cameras stop rolling
The pair have regularly sparred on air over the Glasgow giants - but things off screen appear to be very different Kris Boyd insists that Celtic hero Chris Sutton knows how to exploit his "vulnerability" when the pair clash on Sky Sports. But the Rangers fan favourite reckons he gives as good as he gets - with the duo remaining pals off screen despite the Glasgow divide separating their allegiances. Last season the sparring between the two ranged from 'dead rubber' derby claims to promises of cuddles in car parks as temperatures boiled over in the Sky Sports studio. But Boyd has revealed that the pair will often have a beer after the on-screen exchanges. And he insists the back and forth only proves that the duo are not "bluffers" as they appear alongside James McFadden and host Eilidh Barbour for Scottish Premiership clashes. He told the Sunday Post: "I believe there is a real good chemistry with everyone in the studio, up in the gantry and behind the scenes. Eilidh Barbour anchors it well. " Chris Sutton is excellent at his job and isn't afraid to give his opinion. James McFadden is diligent, respected and likeable. "Ian Crocker is one of the best in the business and has been leading Scottish football commentary for almost 30 years. Luke Shanley gets some great interviews. "We all work really hard to do our jobs to the best of our ability. We are not bluffers. Nobody would last if they tried to cut corners. "People might think it's easy but live television is far from a walk in the park. "When managers aren't doing their jobs well enough you need to call them out and criticise. I know many of the guys but I will not try to cover up for them. "That said, it's not easy to criticise. Some people just can't do it and I've seen pundits crumble when they are put on the spot and asked for an honest assessment of a player or manager. "You also need to be ready to take on your fellow pundit. If any vulnerability is sensed, then it will be quickly pounced upon. "I'll do it to Chris and he will do it to me. We have frank exchanges but we are always fine afterwards. "We'll have a beer or two together. We get on well.* You can get all the news you need on our dedicated Rangers and Celtic pages, and sign up to our newsletters to make sure you never miss a beat throughout the season. here and our Celtic community here.

Former Hearts and Rangers striker Kyle Lafferty has admitted his career could be nearing an end after he put pen-to-paper on a new one-year deal with West of Scotland League Premier Division side Johnstone Burgh. The 89-times capped former Northern Ireland international made his name with current English Premier League club Burnley before joining Rangers during the summer of 2008. A four-year stay at Ibrox brought three Premiership titles, two League Cup final wins and a single Scottish Cup final triumph as Lafferty scored 31 goals in 104 appearances before linking up with former Rangers and Italy midfielder Gennaro Gattuso at Swiss club FC Sion. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad SNS Group The striker went on to spend time with the likes of Palermo and Norwich City before joining Hearts on a two-year deal in June 2017. After scoring 13 goals in 37 appearances and helping his side end Celtic's 69-game unbeaten run in domestic competitions, Lafferty returned to Rangers after a one-season stay at Tynecastle before wrapping up his professional career with short spells with Sunderland, Reggina, Kilmarnock, Anorthosis Famagusta and Linfield. A move into the semi-professional game came during the summer of 2023 as Lafferty penned a two-year deal with Johnstone Bergh - although a serious knee injury suffered in his second game for the club hampered the impact he made during his first season at James Y. Keanie Park. However, the former Hearts man made a big impression last season as he scored the decisive penalty to help the Burgh lift the first Scottish Junior Cup for the first time since 1968. Now 37, Lafferty has committed to one more season with the club and is targeting one last hurrah by guiding the Burgh into the Lowland League before he hangs up his boots. He said: 'I would like to be [at Burgh next season]. I know I am getting on and, if I am here next year, it will probably be my last season. I would like to go out leaving the club in the Lowland League. Even after I hang up my boots, I would like to stay on as a coach at the club. It is something I have looked at. I have my own soccer academy as well so I think I can pass on my experience and hopefully bring the young lads on because I think we don't have a lot of lads from the 21s coming through. Hopefully that will be a side I can look after.' Your next Hearts read: Hearts transfer latest: Key reasons why pair have opted for club detailed and Premiership player talks Jambos

Hibs latest as player details exit reasons and ex star signs Premiership contract
Here are some of the latest transfer headlines with Hibs flavourings Sign up to our Hibs football newsletter Sign up Thank you for signing up! Learn More Sorry, there seem to be some issues. Please try again later. Submitting... Hibs are into the swing of their planning for next season after a short break, and transfer business is on their minds. Already, midfielder Jamie McGrath and goalkeeper Raphael Sallinger have signed for the club. A Europa League second round qualifier against FC Midtjylland is on the horizon next month and the likes of Nectar Triantis are on their radar to bolster a team that finished third in the Premiership last term. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Here are some of the latest transfer headlines with hints of Hibs woven through, from one ex-star's possible exit from Rangers and a striker's reasons for leaving Leith. Ex star signs contract with Premiership club A former Hibs player has signed a one year contract to continue with Livingston into the Premiership. Andrew Shinnie spent between 2016-17 on loan at Hibs and has been at Almondvale since 2021, helping them out the Championship at the first time of asking in late May. Now it has been confirmed the ex Hibee will return to the Premiership with boss David Martindale and co. A statement said: 'Livingston is delighted to capture the signature of Andrew Shinnie for another year, after scoring some key goals along the way in the 2024/25 campaign. Shinnie is David Martindale's 8th signing this summer. Welcome back.' Former ace on Rangers future Kevin Thomson came through the ranks at Hibs and spent four years at the start of his senior career with the Easter Road side before joining Rangers. He returned for two more stints before his playing days ended and has since moved into coaching, back at Rangers having previously been in the academy before taking charge at Kelty Hearts. Amid a takeover at Ibrox, the ex midfielder admits he's in the dark over what comes next. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad He told Sportsound: 'I went back in the second week in February. We finished up the third in May. Obviously in that time there's been a takeover, a new manager. My contract's finished on June 30. As of yet I've not really had much dialogue with the club. I'm just waiting to see what's what. Moving forward, if there's an opportunity there then brilliant. If there's not, then you know what I'm like, I just bash on and keep grafting away." Dylan Vente gives exit reasons One player who has moved on from Hibs is Dylan Vente, who has permanently joined SC Heerenveen after a spell back in the Netherlands with PEC Zwolle. He has detailed why the move is a good one with him, packing in some time for a laugh on the impact of a holiday abroad. Vente told club media: 'I have to hold my stomach in for the photos, because I've been to Ibiza! I like to joke around, but only when I can. When I have to be serious, I am. I am a hard worker for the team. I can play along, but I also have deep runs. I can vary that. After the matches we received a schedule, which also included the sprints and sprint meters. I always had a lot of that. I believe that if you do that, you will be rewarded with goals. The idea that he (Robin Veldman) has, how he sees the coming years, appealed to me. That story, and the size of this club, were reasons to come here."
