Student slapped for eating bread: Tahfiz warden fined RM1,200
PETALING JAYA: A warden at a tahfiz centre who previously slapped a student for eating bread without permission was fined RM1,200 by the Kemaman Magistrates' Court today.
Magistrate Sharifah Amirda Shasha Amir Sharifuddin handed down the sentence after the accused, Mohd Norzaizhul Zainudin, pleaded guilty to the charges read out in court, Kosmo reported.
The 41-year-old was charged with slapping the victim on both the left and right sides of the face, causing injury.
The incident reportedly took place at the tahfiz centre in Kemaman at 3.45pm on 26 April this year.
The accused was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code for assault which carries a penalty of up to one year's imprisonment, a maximum fine of RM2,000, or both, upon conviction.
The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutor Lim Zhan Yi, while the accused was represented by lawyer Masliela Ismail.
Kemaman district police chief, Superintendent Mohd Razi Rosli, previously stated that the 16-year-old student was slapped for breaking the rules by eating bread that had been set aside for breakfast the following day.
The student was admitted to Kemaman Hospital for further treatment.
On April 27, the student lodged a police report at the Kemaman district police headquarters at 9.50am.
The accused was reportedly appointed as a warden at the tahfiz centre in December 2024.

Civil servant arrested for allegedly scratching neighbours' cars
AMPANG: A civil servant at a public university was arrested for allegedly scratching two neighbours' cars using a key in the parking area of their apartment in Taman Pandan Mewah here. Ampang Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azam Ismail said the man, 41, is believed to have committed the offences on May 19 and 22, targeting two different cars parked at a particular spot. "The victims, both Malaysian women, had parked their vehicles in the same spot during the separate incidents," he said in a statement today. "On May 19, the victim found scratches on the front and rear right doors of her Honda, but could not identify the culprit. "In the second incident on May 22 about 1am, another victim's cousin parked a Toyota in the same spot and discovered scratches on the rear door about 6.40am." The victims later lodged complaints with the apartment's management, leading to a review of closed-circuit television footage that captured the man walking near the cars. "Following this, police detained the suspect at 5.35pm on Wednesday in the apartment parking area. A bunch of keys believed to have been used to scratch the cars were also seized." The suspect, a university clerk living in the same apartment, is not personally known to the victims. Azam said the motive remains under investigation. The man has no prior criminal record. The case is being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code for causing mischief.

NFA in Teoh Beng Hock case: DAP seeks clarification from A-G
KUALA LUMPUR: DAP has called on Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar to provide a detailed explanation for his decision not to pursue criminal charges in the case involving the death of political aide Teoh Beng Hock. In a joint statement issued by DAP national chairman Gobind Singh Deo and secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook, the party expressed disappointment over the Attorney-General's decision to classify the case as "no further action" (NFA), despite previous court rulings that pointed to foul play. "The Attorney-General must explain why he believes there is insufficient evidence to prosecute anyone for Teoh Beng Hock's death, especially in light of the findings of the Court of Appeal and civil proceedings," the statement read. According to DAP, the case was referred to the Attorney-General by police on May 21 and was subsequently classified as NFA. A letter dated May 30 was later sent to the family's legal representatives, stating that the investigations did not uncover sufficient evidence to support a criminal prosecution. Teoh, who was a political aide to a Selangor state executive councillor, died in 2009 while in the custody of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). "DAP has been consistently calling for accountability in the case. "The party previously assembled a legal team that initiated an inquest into Teoh's death, which revealed bruising on his neck. "However, the 2011 Coroner's Court returned an open verdict." Subsequent legal challenges saw the Court of Appeal overturn the Coroner's decision, concluding in 2014 that Teoh's death resulted from "an unlawful act or acts of persons unknown, inclusive of MACC officers who were involved in the arrest and investigation." In a related civil suit, the government and MACC admitted liability for negligence, resulting in a RM600,000 settlement to Teoh's family, along with RM60,000 in costs. "These court decisions form a solid basis for further investigation to identify those responsible for Teoh Beng Hock's death. "Whilst the duty to investigate the case and to identify those responsible lies with the police, it is for the Attorney-General to decide his next step based on that investigation," the statement added. The party also voiced its support for the family's reported move to challenge the NFA decision via a judicial review. "We call upon the Attorney-General to reconsider his decision and move forward with pressing charges against those responsible, without further delay."

Five nabbed for murder of Indonesian in Kluang
KLUANG: Police have arrested five men in connection with the death of an Indonesian man at an oil palm plantation area here. Kluang OCPD Asst Comm Bahrin Mohd Noh said the suspects, aged between 21 and 31, were arrested at 1am on Sunday (June 8). 'At about 9.36am on Saturday, we were alerted about a man in his 30s who died at Enche' Besar Hajjah Khalsom Hospital after being stabbed on the left side of his chest. 'Further investigation led to the arrest of the five suspects, who are all Indonesian men,' he said in a statement here on Sunday. He said the suspects, who have no criminal records, have been remanded for seven days starting Sunday. 'We are still investigating the cause of the fight that led to the man's death,' he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
