Montreal beats New York City FC 1-0 on Victor Loturi's goal to net first home win
MONTREAL (AP) — Victor Loturi scored in the 23rd minute and Montreal won its first home game this season in nine attempts with a 1-0 victory over New York City FC on Saturday night.
Montreal (3-12-5) completed the season sweep over New York (8-7-4) for the first time ever.
Dante Sealy found himself isolated with a defender on the right side of the 18-yard box and he sent in a powerful shot that was spilled to Loturi for a one-touch finish. It was Loturi's first goal for the club.
Montreal had two other good opportunities to double the lead in the second half.
Luca Petrasso was left unmarked in front of the goal following a corner kick, but he was unable to control the bouncing ball. Moments later, Jules-Anthony Vilsaint was denied by a fingertip save from Tomas Romero.
Jonathan Sirois secured his fourth clean sheet of the season.
Montreal will face Inter Miami on July 5 if the Florida side is eliminated from the Club World Cup.

Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernadeschi have become free agents after having their contracts with Toronto FC mutually terminated, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. Former President Manning, though, said Insigne helped the club recruit Bernardeschi, and that the pair had a 'very professional teammate relationship,' adding: 'They weren't buddies, but they were close enough.' Hernandez said in January that Insigne 'can influence MLS to a great degree' when he is at his best, but added: 'We just haven't seen enough of that from him when it comes to his availability.' There is an understanding that TFC have a long road ahead of them get back to their glory days of the last decade. Ridding themselves of players who are not part of the future has been a priority for the entire club, including MLSE President Keith Pelley. While these moves might make TFC a worse — or at least less productive — club, the team felt they were necessary to continue changing the culture from the ground up. Given his lack of production, enormously high price tag and detrimental attitude on and off the field, it's worth calling Insigne among the biggest busts in MLS history.

The New York Giants have focused on improving their secondary over the past few seasons through both the draft and free agency. They've brought in Deonte Banks, Tyler Nubin, and Dru Phillips in the draft and this offseason, signed Paulson Adebo and Jevon Holland. Advertisement While the team is high on all of those players, it has been one on their roster for years that has been balling out at organized team activities (OTAs). Safety Dane Belton, a fourth-round pick out of Iowa back in 2022, has been standing out in workouts this spring. He is entering the fourth and final season of his rookie contract and appears intent on forcing the Giants to extend him. "Dane has been really good for us here early. Like he's had a really good spring," defensive coordinator Shane Bowen said this week. "Finding ways to get him on the field, what he can do for us to help us." Belton had another interception in practice on Thursday, his third this spring. That had to please Bowen, who earlier in the day outlined his defensive philosophy for the upcoming season. Advertisement "The main thing is emphasizing takeaways. We got to get better at takeaways," Bowen said of his unit, which was 28th overall in the NFL in that category last season. Belton did get to start six games but only when there was injury to the starters. He made 15 total tackles in the Giants' Week 15 loss to Baltimore and had an interception against Indianapolis in Week 17. The offseason was full of surprises for the New York Giants, and most of them were positive in nature. The biggest storylines were the early development and success of rookies Jaxson Dart and Abdul Carter, as well as the emergence of third-year wide receiver Jalin Hyatt, who packed on more than 20 pounds. Earlier this offseason, it appeared as if he was about to become an afterthought following the signing of Jevon Holland. But think again. "He has been really good for us here early. As Raanan notes, Belton hauled in three interceptions in the limited number of practices opened to reporters. It was noted that he had at least one additional interception during closed practices and returned a total of two for touchdowns. Because of his performance during the offseason workout program, those of us at Giants Wire named him one of the offseason's biggest winners. Ballhawking Belton was at it again all spring, totaling at least four interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns. He's on a path to solidify himself not only as safety No. 3, but as a player who warrants more time on the field alongside Jevon Holland and Tyler Nubin.
