Siblings die by suicide in East Delhi

Hindustan Times2 days ago

A 32-year-old man and his 30-year-old sister died by suicide and their bodies were found in their rented apartment in east Delhi's Dilshad Garden on Sunday morning. Police said the siblings likely died a few days back as foul stench was emanating from the flat, which prompted the neighbours to call police.
When police reached the flat in pocket D at around 8.30am, they found the flat locked from outside. 'When the door was opened with the help of the landlord, the siblings were found dead. They had been living there on rent since 2021,' deputy commissioner of police (Shahdara) Prashant Gautam said.
The deceased hailed from Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh, police said, adding that the brother worked in an IT firm in the Capital while the sister was pursuing MBA from a private college in the city.
Investigation revealed that the siblings had been living alone after their mother's death in 2021. Their father, who was in the Indian army, had died in 2011.
A senior police officer said, 'We didn't find any suicide note or signs of foul play. It looks like they ended their lives a few days back. Neighbours said the duo hardly interacted with anyone and didn't leave their house much. We also contacted distant family members who said the siblings had no close relatives and kept to themselves.'
The landlord told HT, 'I live close by and was called in the morning. I didn't expect this. I was shocked. They (siblings) were very nice and humble. They always gave rent on time and never created any issue. It was only last month when they failed to pay the rent but I didn't push because I was sure they would pay later.'
A neighbour said she would try to talk to the siblings but they didn't interact with anyone. 'I even invited them for my brother's wedding, but they didn't come. I knew about their parents and felt bad as they always stayed indoors,' she said.
Meanwhile, police said they reached out to relatives who said they tried to indulge with the siblings on multiple occasions and for family functions but the two stopped coming after 2021. 'They shifted to Delhi and focused on their work and studies. We don't know if finances were an issue because they never took anyone's help,' a relative told the police.

‘His Heart Beats For Pakistan': BJP Slams Rahul Gandhi Over ‘Surrender' Remark Against PM Modi

Rahul Gandhi compared the Modi government to the regime of Indira Gandhi, saying she didn't back down during the 1971 war even when the US sent its 7th Fleet The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) hit back at Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi after he alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi 'surrendered" after a call from US President Donald Trump during the India-Pakistan military conflict after Operation Sindoor. Following the Congress MP's remark, BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari said that the LoP's hearts beat for Pakistan and dismissed his statement as a reflection of his values. 'Rahul Gandhi's words reflect his values as he makes such indecent remarks against the country's Prime Minister. But this is what can be expected from Rahul Gandhi, whose heart beats for Pakistan," he said. Bhandari credited PM Modi for giving a befitting reply to Pakistan's terror masters. 'From Salman Khurshid to Shashi Tharoor, every Congress leader is talking about this and Pakistan itself is giving evidence of this… The people of the country see this uncivilised Rahul Gandhi as an agent of Pakistan," he added. The BJP leader also referred to an incident where Gandhi did not remove his shoes when he was paying a floral tribute to the statue of his g randmother and former PM Indira Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi compared the Modi government to the regime of his grandmother, former PM Indira Gandhi, saying she didn't back down during the 1971 war even when the US sent its Seventh Fleet. 'A call came from Trump and Narendra ji immediately surrendered – history is a witness, this is the character of BJP-RSS, they always bow down," he said during the launch of the Congress' 'Sangthan Srijan Abhiyan' in Bhopal in the presence of Congress leaders and workers. 'I know BJP-RSS people; if you put even a little pressure and give them just a slight push, they run away out of fear," he said. The Congress from Rae Bareli stated that India broke Pakistan in 1971 despite America's threat. 'Congress's Babbar Sher and lionesses fight with superpowers, they never bowed down," he added. He said no phone call came during the 1971 war. 'Even though the 7th fleet, weapons, and an aircraft carrier arrived, Indira Gandhi didn't surrender and said she would do whatever she wanted," Rahul Gandhi said. '(Mahatma) Gandhi, (Jawaharlal) Nehru, and (Vallabh Bhai) Patel never surrendered, they fought superpowers," the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha added. Did Trump Broker India-Pak Ceasefire? US officials were engaged with Indian and Pakistan governments after New Delhi struck nine terror camps in Pakistan and PoK during Operation Sindoor leading to a military conflict of two nuclear-armed nations over the next two days. On May 10 (evening IST), Trump announced the ceasefire on his Truth Social handle. However, India's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MEA) rebutted Trump's claim and said an understanding was reached with Pakistan in direct talks. According to the MEA statement, the Director General of Military Operations of Pakistan called the DGMO of India and agreed that both sides would stop all firing and military action on land and in the air and sea.

‘Is it 1 nation, 1 husband scheme?': Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann's sindoor dig sparks BJP outrage

Chandigarh: chief minister on Tuesday accused the of turning "sindoor" (vermilion) into a joke and asked if it was a "one nation, one husband" scheme, eliciting a sharp reaction from the BJP, which accused the AAP leader of "mocking" . Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Replying to a question about the Ludhiana West assembly seat byelection, Mann said BJP was seeking votes in the name of Operation Sindoor. "These people have turned 'sindoor' into a joke. They are sending sindoor to every home. If it comes to your house, will you apply 'sindoor' in (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi's name? Is this a 'one nation, one husband' scheme?" Mann said. Mann was briefing media after a meeting of the state cabinet. Later, Mann added in a press statement that the BJP's Operation Sindoor tactic wouldn't sway voters, as people wouldn't be fooled by such moves. He called these actions mere "theatrics" that the citizens of the state and country would never fall for. Mann said it was ironic the BJP and Centre were "sending sindoor to every household without any logical reason". Punjab BJP spokesperson Pritpal Singh Baliawal termed the remark shameful. In a post on X, he accused Mann of mocking Operation Sindoor. "There is no BJP activity of sending sindoor to every household. The name Operation Sindoor was used because terrorists were killing Hindus after checking their religion — sindoor was a marker they used to identify women. This operation was about terrorism, martyrdom, and the protection of Indian lives. But how would Bhagwant Mann, a man with zero sensitivity, understand that?" he said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Union minister of state Ravneet Bittu demanded an unconditional apology from Mann and described his remarks as "crass". "I never expected Mann to stoop so low by mocking the widows of Pahalgam using the disgraceful phrase 'one nation, one husband'," he said. AAP spokesperson Neel Garg defended Mann, saying the right to sindoor belonged only to a husband and not a political party. "BJP says it will distribute sindoor to every home. I ask: does the BJP now have a right even over a woman's sindoor? Is this the BJP's idea of respect to women? In Hindu culture, sindoor is a symbol of affection, dedication, and marital bliss, not a political gimmick. But the BJP has turned even this into a PR event. A woman's sindoor is her dignity, not a plea for votes. Sindoor is given only by her husband, not by the BJP," he added. BJP Ludhiana West candidate Jiwan Gupta is in a four-way contest in the bypoll and faces AAP's Sanjeev Arora, Congress' Bharat Bhushan Ashu, and Shiromani Akali Dal's Parupkar Singh Ghumman. Appeal for border areas Mann said during a recent meeting of NITI Aayog, he asked the Centre to set up colleges and industries in border areas. He said it was imperative to give a major push to the development of border districts of the state that lagged due to several reasons. He added he also flagged the issue of problems being faced by the farmers of the state having their land between the international border and the fence. 'Locals have right to be upset' Replying to a question about residents of Bhai Bakhtaur village in Bathinda district putting up a poster that declared their village was sale, Mann said locals had a right to be upset. "We launched a massive anti-drug campaign. In between, there was tension at the border and Centre's autocratic directives on the BBMB. There is no patronage to those selling drugs, unlike the previous practice of ministers supporting the drug trade," he said. 'Paddy sowing on, can't debate' Asked about Kisan Mazdoor Sangarash Committee (KMSC) president Sarvan Singh Pandher expressing readiness for a meeting with the state govt, CM Mann responded, "Right now, I am more concerned about agriculture as paddy sowing season just began." He added, "For them, the priority might be to hold debates... I held meetings for over seven hours with them in the past." Call for water pact review Mann stated that due to frequent changes in water levels, every water agreement should be reviewed every 25 years. He asserted that Punjab had no spare water to share with other states, vowing that "even a single drop of water will not be given to anyone". Responding to a question if Ferozepur farmers were receiving water diverted from Pakistan, Mann said the area wasn't getting water from Hussainiwala previously anyway, as "that water only goes to Rajasthan feeder". He clarified that the Centre only stopped water to Pakistan from the Sind and Chenab rivers, adding: "If they give it to us, we will distribute it."

‘Differ Politically, But Not On Terror': Kanimozhi Says World Lauded India's Cross-Party Unity

Last Updated: India stands as one against cross-border terror, says DMK MP Kanimozhi. In the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack and India's strong response under Operation Sindoor, a cross-party delegation of Indian leaders has returned from a global diplomatic outreach spanning over 30 countries. DMK MP Kanimozhi, who led one such delegation, on Tuesday said the unified political front left a strong impression abroad. 'The very strong message even before we spoke was that this was an all-party delegation, led by an opposition MP and comprising mostly opposition members. That itself spoke volumes," she told reporters. 'It showed that whatever our differences, India stands together in the face of terrorism." Kanimozhi said many countries had already condemned the attack in Pahalgam, but direct engagement helped clarify India's position. 'We told them terrorism doesn't stop at India's borders, it spills over. The world must come together to fight it." While in Spain, DMK MP Kanimozhi drew applause after responding to a question on India's national language by saying, 'The national language of India is unity in diversity." Her reply quickly went viral online. She also firmly stated that India is seeking to renegotiate the Indus Waters Treaty, calling it 'currently in abeyance," and added, 'India cannot be blackmailed. India cannot be silenced". During their meetings in Athens, Greece, an all-party delegation led by the MP from Tamil Nadu received backing from the Greek government in India's campaign against terrorism, sources said. Greece endorsed India's diplomatic boycott of countries like Turkey, which had supplied weapons to Pakistan and expressed solidarity with New Delhi's efforts to expose states that support terror. Greece also conveyed condolences for the Indian lives lost in the April 22 Pahalgam attack and backed India's right to respond, sources told News18. The Kanimozhi-led team included Rajeev Rai (Samajwadi Party), Mian Altaf Ahmad (Jammu and Kashmir National Conference), Brijesh Chowta (BJP), Prem Chand Gupta (Rashtriya Janata Dal), Ashok Kumar Mittal (Aam Aadmi Party) and former diplomats Manjeev S Puri and Jawed Ashraf. In Russia, Kanimozhi said the delegation met several Russian thinkers, lawmakers, and even the former Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov, who now heads the Russian Institute of Strategic Studies. 'This country is a very important strategic partner and a very old ally of India," she said. 'We explained our position in detail—what happened before, during, and after the Pahalgam attack and sought Russia's understanding and support in the fight against terrorism". 'Terrorism is not just India's issue, it's a global challenge," Kanimozhi added. 'No country should be harbouring or supporting terrorists." The delegation's itinerary included visits to Russia, Slovenia, Greece, Latvia and Spain to present India's position on cross-border terrorism to lawmakers, diplomats and civil society leaders.
