SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Josef Martínez found the net in the second minute of second-half stoppage time to polish off a league-record seventh hat trick, leading the San Jose Earthquakes to a 6-1 romp over D.C. United on Sunday and moving him into the No. 6 spot on the league's all-time goals list.
Martínez scored in the 16th minute after Cristian 'Chicho' Arango scored in the 8th to give the Earthquakes (3-3-1) a 2-0 lead. Martínez made it 4-1 in the 81st minute. He capped the scoring after substitute Amahl Pellegrino found the net in the 90th. San Jose's other goal came on a penalty kick by Cristian Espinoza that made it 3-0 in the 20th minute.

Martínez went six years, 259 days between hat tricks — the second longest streak in league history behind Dwayne De Rosario (7 years, 313 days).
Martínez has 120 goals in 190 career appearances since joining the league in 2017, including four in his first season with San Jose. He moved ahead of Bradley Wright-Phillips. Jaime Moreno (133) and Jeff Cunningham (134) are next on the list. Chris Wondolowski is the all-time leader with 171, scoring his final 167 for the Earthquakes.
Arango scored for the fourth time in his first season with San Jose and has 57 goals in 99 career appearances.
Espinoza collected two assists, tying him with Charlotte FC's Pep Biel for the league lead with five. Espinoza's first goal this season came on the PK, giving him 33 in 194 career appearances.

Niko Tsakiris, Jamar Ricketts, Mark-Anthony Kaye and Pellegrino all had assists for San Jose.
DC United (1-3-3) made it 3-1 at the half when reigning Golden Boot Award-winner Christian Benteke scored two minutes into stoppage time with assists from defender Derek Dodson and Gabriel Pirani. It was the fifth goal this season for Benteke after scoring 23 times last year.
Daniel De Sousa Britto finished with nine saves in goal for San Jose. He also had nine saves last week against the Seattle Sounders in a 1-1 draw.
Kim Joon Hong saved three shots for DC United.
DC United returns home to play FC Cincinnati on Saturday. The Earthquakes travel to play Los Angeles FC on Saturday.

Missing the final three months of the season entering his draft eligible year, the 17-year-old said, is nothing compared to what NHL Central Scouting's top-ranked North American skater has already endured . Schaefer lost his mother, Jennifer, to breast cancer in February 2024. Two months earlier, his billet mother in Erie was struck and killed by a train, with her death ruled a suicide. 'I've been through a lot in my life and I'd rather an injury than losing someone I love,' Schaefer said Friday at the NHL's annual pre-draft combine in Buffalo. 'I mean, there's a lot worse things that can happen than injuries. As for recovering from the collarbone he broke in December, Schaefer said: 'I'm pretty positive with my mindset and I'm driven to want to come back. So yeah, obviously injuries, they're not fun. But I'm driven to get better and come back even stronger.' Schaefer was cleared to resume skating May 1 and plans to take part in all of the combine's strength and agility tests with the exception of the bench press and pullups. Upbeat and talkative, he showed no hint of the pain he's dealt with by engaging reporters in opening the press conference by saying: 'What's going on today? Everybody good?' Schaefer then proceeded to playfully joke and also compliment Saginaw Spirit forward Michael Misa, with whom he shared the podium and is the No. 2-ranked North American skater. 'Not able to play as much, I got to watch a little more and got to know him. Great guy on and off ice,' Schaefer said, before saying he'd be happy if Misa was selected ahead of him. Schaefer then displayed humility by acknowledging being surprised to maintain the No. 1 ranking despite having his season cut short after being hurt representing Canada at the world junior championships. 'I played only 17 games and, you know, why are you at the top of that list?' he said. 'I played in those 17 games, I took it as opportunities and I worked as hard as I could and left it all out there.' NHL Central Scouting chief Dan Marr told The Associated Press the debate in ranking Schaefer over Misa was close, and wouldn't be surprised if Misa or perhaps, Boston College center James Hagens , goes No. 1 in the draft in Los Angles on June 27. Hagens is from Long Island and the top-ranked American-born skater. The top-ranked European skaters are Sweden junior teammates, center Anton Frondell and right wing Victor Eklund, who's brother William plays for San Jose. The New York Islanders have the first pick , followed by San Jose and Chicago. What separated Schaefer from the rest in the rankings, Marr said, was what he showed in his 17 games with Erie, and his performance at the Canada's Under-18 summer camp. From Hamilton, Ontario, Schaefer displayed his offensive abilities in scoring seven goals and 22 points with Erie last season. That's what scouts were looking for following his rookie season in which Schaefer had three goals and 17 points in 56 games. Listed at 6-foot-2 and 183 pounds, Schaefer is a two-way defenseman with strong skating and play-making ability. Misa, is from Oakville, Ontario, and enjoyed a breakout third season in Saginaw while making the switch from wing to center. Granted exceptional status to play at 15 in 2022, he led all Canadian Hockey League players this season with 134 points (62 goals, 72 assists) — the most by an OHL player 17 or younger since John Tavares in 2006-07. Tavares, now with Toronto, went No. 1 pick 2009 draft to the Islanders. Schaefer enjoyed the interview process over the past week, and said he had dinner with both the Islanders and Sharks. 'I'm a talker. I love all these interviews and stuff, it keeps me busy,' Schaefer said. He then jokingly frowned when informed Misa had four dinners. Olympic Gymnastics Coach Receives Lifetime Ban For Abuse

Qi Han, founder of Everest Gymnastics in Cornelius, N.C., is a former Chinese national team gymnast turned U.S. coach. The U.S. Center for SafeSport is an independent, non-profit organization responsible for investigating and responding to allegations of abuse in Olympic and Paralympic sports. On Thursday, June 5, SafeSport ruled Han 'permanently ineligible" on the centralized disciplinary database. The organization cites Han's emotional misconduct, physical misconduct, and the violation of USA Gymnastics policies and bylaws. Han coached former elite gymnast Ashton Locklear to an Olympic alternate spot in 2016 and a World title in 2014. He also coached Haleigh Bryant, a three-time NCAA National Champion with the LSU Tigers. The permanent suspension comes after Han was temporarily sanctioned for the reported misconduct in 2023. During the sanction period, Han was barred from training or contacting athletes without supplementary adult supervision. The process has been tedious for Han's victims. Allegations first surfaced in 2016, with Locklear, his most prominent athlete, reporting emotional and physical abuse to the U.S.A. Gymnastics and the U.S. Center for SafeSport in 2017. Locklear reported 'yelling" and abrupt expulsion from the gym, and accused Han of 'throwing a cellphone at her.' Han denied Locklear's claims, and in 2018, she told The New York Times that those allegations initially fell on deaf ears. 'They know about his abuse and they did nothing," she reported. The case was passed over to SafeSport in 2017, and Locklear was far from alone. According to the center, allegations against Han came from over 80 witnesses, with details measuring 'thousands of pages of evidence' and 'that span decades.' Han opened his Charlotte-area gym in 2004, nearly two decades before his initial sanction in 2023. Monica Avery, the owner of OSEGA Dream Academy in Asheville, N.C., reported Han's abuse to U.S.A Gymnastics in 2016. Avery alleged that she had seen Han 'kick an athlete' at a gymnastics competition in Texas. Avery also expressed frustration with the speed of Han's case. 'The emotional damage all these girls go through is so heartbreaking, and it could have been prevented if Han would have been stopped years ago,' she said. While the ruling is subject to appeal, the interim CEO of the U.S. Center for SafeSport, April Holmes, delivered the following statement regarding the verdict. 'This outcome sends a clear message that sport culture is changing and accountability is moving the needle.'
