UNAMI committed to Iraq's future as withdrawal plan proceeds

Iraqi Newsa day ago

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) -Omani diplomat Mohamed Al Hassan, the United Nations Special Representative for Iraq and head of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), briefed the UN Security Council in New York on June 10.
Al Hasan noted recent progress in Iraq's stability, regional integration, and democratic processes, as well as UNAMI's evolving role.
In his address, Al Hassan expressed strong support for Iraq, stating, 'I reaffirm my full confidence in Iraq and the Iraqi people, and in the ability of this ancient nation — one of the founding members of the United Nations — to reclaim its civilizational stature.' He added that the UN, and he personally, remain fully committed to assisting Iraq and will 'spare no effort in doing so.'
Al Hassan also outlined ongoing structural changes within UNAMI as part of a transition strategy. As the mission moves toward a drawdown, it has begun closing offices in Kirkuk and Mosul and is gradually reducing staffing levels.
Despite the scale-back, UNAMI will continue working closely with the Iraqi government to ensure a smooth and timely transition while fulfilling its remaining mandates.

Turkish delegation to visit Iraq soon with key issues on agenda

Shafaq News/ A high-level Turkish delegation is expected to visit Baghdad in the coming days, a source familiar with the matter told Shafaq News on Thursday. The delegation, headed by the President of the Turkish Council of Higher Education and including several ministers, will hold discussions on key issues, including the security situation in Syria and the presence of Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) elements. The talks will also address economic matters, particularly mechanisms for resuming oil exports through the Ceyhan port, as well as the issue of financial penalties imposed on Turkiye. Additional commercial agreements and other files will also be on the agenda during meetings with the Iraqi government. Turkiye halted oil flows through the pipeline linking the Kurdistan Region to the Ceyhan port in March 2023 after a tribunal ordered Ankara to pay Iraq approximately $1.5 billion in compensation for unauthorized oil exports, refusing to pay the fine and asking Erbil to assume the liability. The shutdown halted around 500,000 barrels per day (bpd) of Iraqi oil exports. A restart could partially ease the impact on oil markets, which have faced reduced shipments from Iraq, a key crude supplier. Iraq previously exported between 400,000 and 500,000 bpd from northern fields, including those in the Kurdistan Region, through the now-idle pipeline. Earlier, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani visited Turkiye on May 8, 2025, where he met with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The visit focused on strengthening bilateral relations and concluded with the signing of 10 memorandums of understanding in areas including energy, trade, investment, and security. Meanwhile, trade between Iraq and Turkiye reached approximately $13 billion in 2024 and is expected to grow further in 2025.

Iran's Araghchi warns of 'complications' after IAEA resolution

Shafaq News/ On Thursday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that a resolution by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) accusing Tehran of violating non-proliferation commitments would further complicate nuclear talks with the United States set for Sunday. Speaking to local media outlets, Araghchi confirmed holding a meeting in Oslo with his Omani counterpart to discuss preparations for the upcoming round of talks with the US. 'We will go to Muscat on Sunday to defend the rights of our people and the achievements of our nuclear scientists,' he stated. The IAEA Board of Governors had issued a rare resolution declaring Iran non-compliant with its nuclear safeguards obligations, marking the first such move in nearly two decades. The announcement came at a critical time, with reports saying that Israel might conduct a military operation against Tehran, and Washington decided to evacuate diplomats and personnel from its embassy in Baghdad and several Gulf countries. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said that Iran would rebuild its nuclear facilities if they were destroyed. 'These capabilities exist in our minds,' he said. Quds Force Commander Esmail Qaani also declared, 'We are not seeking war, but no one dares to wage one against us. Weakness in Iran and the resistance is a mere illusion.'

Iraqi armed groups to meet over growing threat to Iran

Shafaq News/ The Iraqi Resistance Coordination Committee (IRCC) will hold a key meeting within hours, amid growing consensus among armed factions to intervene directly if Iran comes under military attack, a source revealed to Shafaq News on Thursday. IRCC is a body for various Iranian-backed Iraqi armed groups, particularly those that have been part of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI). it emerged in October 2020 and has been involved in actions against US forces and Israel. 'The factions have unanimously agreed to engage directly in any war targeting Iran, whether led by the United States or Israel. However, political and governmental pressure is mounting on certain faction leaders to avoid involvement in any imminent regional escalation,' the source revealed. He further pointed out that the meeting will include most of the armed factions in Iraq and be attended by senior faction leaders to discuss the latest regional escalation, ongoing US threats, and the possibility of war against Iran, 'to outline the role of the factions should conflict erupt.' Earlier, the Secretary-General of the Kataib Sayyid al-Shuhada, Abu Alaa Al-Walai, threatened to send dozens of suicide fighters to strike American interests in the event of war with Iran.
