2nd suspect surrenders in SoHo crypto torture case; man allegedly held for weeks
The Brief
A second man has turned himself in after a victim was allegedly tortured inside an apartment in order to get him to give up his Bitcoin password.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch made the announcement on Good Day New York.
"So far, it's those two that we're looking at. There may be others," Tisch said.
NEW YORK CITY - A second man has turned himself in – NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Tuesday morning on Good Day New York – after a victim from Italy was allegedly tortured inside an upscale SoHo apartment in order to get him to give up his Bitcoin password.
The man, identified as William Duplessie, 33, of Miami, FL, is charged with:
Assault in the 2nd degree.
Kidnapping in the 1st degree.
Unlawful imprisonment in the 1st degree.
Criminal possession of a firearm.
"So far, it's those two that we're looking at. There may be others," Tisch said.
What we know
Cryptocurrency investor John Woeltz, 37, was also charged with kidnapping the man and keeping him locked up for weeks in the apartment, where authorities say he was beaten, shocked and led to believe that his family was in danger if he didn't give up his Bitcoin password.
Woeltz was arrested Friday night after the victim escaped from the eight-bedroom town house and flagged down a traffic officer on the street for help, according to prosecutors.
He was arraigned Saturday on charges of kidnapping, assault, unlawful imprisonment and criminal possession of a firearm, court records show.
The backstory
The 28-year-old victim arrived in New York City from Italy in early May, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press.
The victim said he was bound by the wrists and tortured for weeks inside the apartment. His captors, according to prosecutors, drugged him, used electric wires to shock him, hit him in the head with a firearm and, at one point, carried him to the top of a flight of stairs, where they dangled him over a ledge and threatened to kill him if he didn't share his Bitcoin password.
Believing that he was about to be shot, the victim was able to escape on Friday after agreeing to give up his password, which was stored on his laptop in another room. When the suspect turned his back, prosecutor Michael Mattson said, the victim ran out of the apartment.
The victim was taken to a hospital and treated for injuries that Mattson said were consistent with his descriptions of being bound and assaulted.
A search of the town house turned up a trove of evidence, Mattson said, including cocaine, a saw, chicken wire, body armor and night vision goggles, ammunition and polaroid photos of the victim with a gun pointed at his head.
What we don't know
It's not clear how or if the two knew each other, but the district attorney's office said in an email that prosecutor Michael Mattson told a judge Saturday that the victim, whose name has not been released, was abducted on May 6.

Bitcoin Suddenly Braced For $7 Trillion ‘Critical' Price Tipping Point After Stark BlackRock Warning
06/01 update below. This post was originally published on May 30 Bitcoin has fallen sharply since hitting an all-time high last week, down 6% despite the U.S. vice president JD Vance issuing a huge bitcoin prediction. Front-run Donald Trump, the White House and Wall Street by subscribing now to Forbes' CryptoAsset & Blockchain Advisor where you can "uncover blockchain blockbusters poised for 1,000% plus gains!" The bitcoin price has rocketed over the last two years, turbo-charged by Wall Street adoption led by the world's largest asset manager BlackRock and then U.S. president Donald Trump's embrace of the technology (with Elon Musk quietly plotting what could be a bitcoin price game-changer). Now, as fears swirl the U.S. dollar could be teetering on the verge of collapse, a serious BlackRock warning that quantum computing could pose an existential risk to bitcoin has been escalated by a Google research paper that found encryption-breaking quantum computers could be a lot closer than previously thought. More bitcoin on Wall Street, helping the bitcoin price boom. 'This is a 20-fold decrease in the number of qubits from our previous estimate,' Google Quantum AI researcher Craig Gidney wrote, referring to the number of quantum computer qubits needed to break a public-key encryption algorithm similar to that used by bitcoin. 'If this is even remotely true, combined with everything else happening right now, the only safe trade are hard assets and, dare I say, gold,' investor Chamath Palihapitiya, a vocal supporter of bitcoin who claims to have first bought some when the bitcoin price was just $100, posted to X in response to the paper. 06/01 update: The bitcoin price has now plummeted by almost 10% from its all-time high of $112,000 per bitcoin, falling to just over $103,000 and fast approaching the closely-watched $100,000 level. "Next week will be critical for both the crypto market," analysts with 10x Research led by Markus Thielen wrote in an emailed note that suggested long-term bitcoin holders are beginning to sell. This coming week will see slew of economic and labor market data—topped by Friday's monthly U.S. jobs report—as well as U.S. president Donald Trump's controversial "big, beautiful" tax bill coming to the Senate and legal back-and-forth expected over Trump's market-crashing barrage of global trade tariffs. Meanwhile, bullish bitcoin price analysts are predicting small changes in 'sentiment' could trigger outsized market swings, with huge volumes of cash still sitting on the sidelines. 'With roughly $7 trillion still parked in money market funds and another $2 trillion in fixed income ETFs, even a modest shift in risk sentiment could redirect meaningful capital into crypto and other high-beta assets,' Matt Mena, research strategist at crypto exchange-traded fund (ETF) company 21Shares, said in emailed comments. 'If bitcoin breaks out of the $105,000 to $110,000 range with conviction, we could see a sharp move to $120,000 and, more importantly, reach our previously year-end price target of $138,500 per bitcoin by the end of the summer.' Earlier this month, BlackRock quietly added a serious warning about quantum computing to the list of risks to its huge spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF). BlackRock, which manages after around $10 trillion worth of assets for investors, spearheaded Wall Street's campaign to bring a long-awaited spot bitcoin ETF to market in 2023, with a fleet of funds debuting in January 2024. The fund now holds around 3% of the 21 million bitcoin that will ever exist, worth $70 billion at the current bitcoin price, which some have warned could be giving BlackRock outsized control over the network. 'If quantum computing technology is able to advance […] it could potentially undermine the viability of many of the cryptographic algorithms used across the world's information technology infrastructure, including the cryptographic algorithms used for digital assets like bitcoin,' BlackRock's amended regulatory filing for its bitcoin fund read. The quantum computing risk to bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies has exploded recently, with tech giants including Google making strides in quantum computing research. 'At this point, no blockchain is ready to withstand a quantum attack when this becomes possible, which could very well be much earlier than 2030,' David Carvalho, the chief executive of decentralized post-quantum infrastructure blockchain Naoris Protocol, said in earlier emailed comments that warned bitcoin is 'sleepwalking into a disaster.'

Crypto kidnapping victim's dizzying view during alleged weeks-long torture ordeal
This is likely the dizzying view forced on crypto kidnapping victim Michael Valentino Teofrasto Carturan when he was allegedly dangled over a five-story staircase while being tortured for his Bitcoin password. Real estate photos of the eight-bedroom $21 million-dollar townhouse on Prince Street in SoHo where authorities said Carturan, 28, was abused and held captive for 17 days show the spiral, multi-level plunge he is believed to have faced during the harrowing ordeal. The native of Italy, who is worth $30 million, suffered serious injuries in the horrific episode, during which Manhattan prosecutors alleged he was tied to a chair with electrical wire, tased while standing in water, cut on his legs and arm with a chainsaw, urinated on and forced to take drugs. Advertisement 3 This is the staircase the victim is believed to have been dangled over. Compas His accused tormentors — crypto entrepreneur John Woeltz and Swiss business man William Duplessie — also allegedly destroyed Carturan's passport. Carturan was rescued after he fled the townhouse barefoot on May 23 and flagged down a traffic cop for help. Advertisement 3 The victim dashed out of the house, barefoot, when his captor looked the other way, sources said. WNBC The former captive has already contacted the Italian consulate on the Upper East Side in order to get a new passport, Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported. 'Only on Saturday did the first contacts take place between the family (who said little or nothing keeping the conditions and the account of what happened confidential) and the Italian Foreign Ministry,' according to the outlet. His family owns a herbalist shop, according to the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera. Advertisement 3 John Woeltz of Kentucky was accused of torturing the victim for his Bitcoin password. Michael Nagle Carturan was living in Rivoli, a town in the city of Turin in northern Italy, with his family before venturing to the Big Apple on May 6 to meet Woeltz, according to authorities and sources. He had studied psychology before dropping out of school to trade crypto, the Italian press reported. He was apparently hoping to retrieve Bitcoin allegedly stolen from him by Woeltz and Duplessie, who then turned the tables, took him captive and threatened to kill him and his family unless he gave them the password to his bitcoin wallet, prosecutors said. Advertisement Woeltz, 37, of Kentucky, is believed to be worth $100 million. Polaroids that were found at the property showed Carturan — who reportedly has a net worth of $30 million — with a gun pointed at his head and being forced to smoke crack cocaine, authorities said. The pair are due in court June 11.

Prediction: These 3 Cryptos Will Outperform Bitcoin in 2025
Ethereum has outperformed Bitcoin over the past 30 days, primarily due to investor enthusiasm over its recent blockchain upgrade. Solana, which could be getting new spot ETFs later in the year, has the potential to triple in value over the next three years. XRP, which exploded in value after the 2024 election, could benefit from an end to ongoing tariff uncertainty. 10 stocks we like better than XRP › Right now, Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) is in the driver's seat. The world's top cryptocurrency is up 17% for the year and is once again in the spotlight after cruising to a new all-time high of $112,000 on May 22. But as we head into the second half of the year, three top cryptocurrencies have the potential to outperform Bitcoin. Let's take a closer look. First up is Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH). Despite its well-publicized problems over the past few months, Ethereum appears to be on the verge of a comeback. It's now up 45% over the past 30 days. By way of comparison, Bitcoin is up only 14% over that same period. Every year, Ethereum rolls out a new upgrade of its blockchain, and this year was no exception. The new upgrade (known as Pectra), which went live in early May, promises to make Ethereum faster, cheaper, and easier to use. Given how much competition Ethereum faces in the Layer 1 blockchain space today, these performance enhancements are critical. Moreover, Ethereum could be getting some good news on the regulatory front in the second half of the year. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is scheduled to offer formal guidance on staking, a process that is at the core of a proof-of-stake blockchain such as Ethereum. In a best-case scenario, the SEC will rule that investment products can include staking mechanisms. That would provide a real boost to the spot Ethereum exchange-traded funds (ETFs), which have thus far been unable to offer staking rewards to customers. Investors are already well-acquainted with how high Solana (CRYPTO: SOL) can soar when it is firing on all cylinders. In 2023, for example, Solana skyrocketed more than 900%. I'm not predicting the same type of performance in the second half of 2025, but Solana can definitely go parabolic. Standard Chartered is currently predicting that Solana can hit a price of $275 by the end of 2025 and $500 by 2029. Currently, Solana is trading at $175, which gives it the potential to nearly triple in value over the next few years. There's just one caveat, however. According to Standard Chartered, Solana is a "1-trick pony" because so much of its recent growth has been driven by the explosion of investor interest around meme coins. Solana has a super-fast, super-efficient blockchain, and all that throughput capacity and speed would be better put to work in areas such as financial services or artificial intelligence. The good news is that Solana is likely to receive SEC approval for new spot ETFs sometime in late 2025. Already, spot Solana ETFs trade in Brazil, and a variety of exchange-traded products (ETPs) trade in Europe. So, U.S. approval of these ETFs appears to be a near certainty. If this approval happens as expected, new investor money could flow into Solana at a rapid rate. Finally, there's XRP (CRYPTO: XRP). Similar to Solana, XRP has already shown investors what it can do. In the three-month period following the 2024 election, XRP was the world's top-performing cryptocurrency. At one point, it was up nearly 600%. But then came tariffs, and the investor euphoria that once surrounded XRP dissipated. XRP is now trading at just $2.30, more than 30% below its 52-week high of $3.40, set in January. The investor concern about XRP these days is understandable. The core use case for the XRP token is cheap and fast cross-border payments. So, if international trade is grinding to a halt due to tariffs, it's easy to see why XRP usage is also grinding to a halt. A best-case scenario for XRP is for tariff uncertainty to end and for global trading partners to resume trading. XRP could get a boost later in the year, as that's when the SEC is scheduled to rule on its spot ETF applications. A new spot XRP ETF started trading in Brazil earlier this year, so the current thinking is that new U.S. spot ETF approvals are going to be coming soon. All three of these cryptocurrencies -- Ethereum, Solana, and XRP -- have the potential to skyrocket on their own. But there's one more factor that could positively impact all of them: the arrival of altcoin season. During this time, risky altcoins soar in value, far surpassing anything Bitcoin is capable of doing. This is a well-documented phenomenon that occurs as investors begin to rotate their money into riskier and riskier segments of the crypto market. There's a lot of debate right now in the crypto community about whether an altcoin season is coming in 2025. However, the growing consensus is that Bitcoin hitting a new all-time high could be the signal for its official kick-off. Bitcoin might be getting all the buzz right now. But a few months from now, you might be wishing you had shifted just a tiny portion of your crypto portfolio to these three altcoins with explosive upside potential.
