Live Music Under the Stars: CineMoon Ensemble brings classical sound to school community

Qatar Tribune03-05-2025

Under a starlit Doha sky, the CineMoon Ensemble, member of the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, delivered a memorable concert at the German International School Doha.
Titled 'Live Music Under the Stars', the concert combined musical performance with educational engagement in a setting designed to bring students and professionals altogether. The concert started with a performance from the school's band then followed by the performance of the CineMoon Ensemble.
Merve Kenet Bulun, founder and artistic director of CineMoon Ensemble, said: 'The highlight of this evening was really the message behind it. Our collaboration between the CineMoon Ensemble and the school band was very meaningful to me. Music brought us together — experienced musicians and young students just starting their journey. It was a joy to share the stage with them, and I truly admire their professionalism and the happiness they showed while performing.'
The evening's repertoire featured a mix of classical pieces, captivating an audience of around 180 guests. The open-air setting of thecampus, described by Principal Kai Darmstädter as a 'garden party', provided the perfect ambiance for an intimate yet vibrant musical experience.
Darmstädter described the concert as part of the school's effort to promote cultural engagement within the wider community. He explained that the event, which is the second time that they are doing, is a chance to invite people into the school, not only to enjoy music, but to see that classical music is accessible and enjoyable. Acknowledging that many students are more familiar with pop music and digital content, Darmstädter noted the value of exposing them to orchestral instruments and live ensembles.
He noted that they have limited time for music in the curriculum, and events like this help bridge the gap as they give students a different kind of musical experience. The concert also served as a learning opportunity, with teachers using the occasion to introduce students to orchestral arrangements, instrument families, and the work of the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra. The partnership with CineMoon Ensemble has already prompted discussions about future collaborations. Bulun said, 'I believe music is a universal language — it carries happiness, joy, sadness, and imagination. I would encourage every young person to try learning an instrument or to sing. Music is truly a gift for the soul and one of the most beautiful presents humanity has received: a world filled with wonderful sounds.' (TNN)

Iranian President invites Iraqi counterpart to Eid festival in Tehran

According to Iranian media reports, the two presidents discussed the current state of ties between Tehran and Baghdad during a phone call. Pezeshkian emphasized the historical and cultural bonds shared by Iran and Iraq and reiterated his administration's commitment to unity with Muslim nations, including Iraq, to safeguard the dignity of Islamic countries. President Rashid, for his part, affirmed that the Iraqi government is prepared to enhance coordination and cooperation with Tehran for the mutual benefit and sustainable development of both countries. Celebrated on the 10th day of the Islamic month of Dhul-Hijjah, it coincides with the Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca. The festival involves special prayers and the ritual sacrifice of an animal—usually a sheep, goat, or cow—with the meat shared among family, friends, and those in need.

Reviving Syria's farms: New plan for food security

Shafaq News/ On Thursday, Syria's Ministry of Economy and Foreign Trade unveiled an agricultural plan to strengthen domestic production. Once a cornerstone of the economy, Syria's agriculture sector has suffered severe setbacks since 2011 due to war-related damage, infrastructure loss, and prolonged drought. The ministry stated that the plan targets expanded cultivation, improved access to farming inputs, and direct financial support to producers. 'We are reactivating the agricultural sector through incentives and logistical backing,' Hassan al-Ahmad, director of the ministry's media office, told Shafaq News. Al-Ahmad attributed the sector's deterioration to previous policy decisions that reduced farmer support and overrelied external supply agreements. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), wheat output has declined from over four million tons pre-conflict to under one million tonnes in recent years, forcing Syria to import more than 90% of its wheat needs. However, the former regime's policies 'dismantled local production and pushed the country into dependency,' al-Ahmad stated, adding that the goal of the new initiative is to 'reduce foreign reliance and achieve sustainable food security.'

Iraq's World Cup dreams: High stakes against South Korea

Shafaq News/ Iraq will host South Korea on Thursday night in a pivotal 2026 World Cup qualifier, with Basra International Stadium fully operational but fan turnout trailing expectations due to ticketing issues and Eid travel. The match, scheduled for 9:15 p.m. local time (6:15 a.m. GMT), is part of the ninth round in Asia's third qualifying stage and marks Basra's most significant sporting event since the 2023 Gulf Cup. Director of Basra Sports City Lutfi al-Jazaeri confirmed that upgrades to lighting, sound, and access systems had been completed. Additional parking for 8,000 vehicles was arranged near the venue. 'All components, from entrances to transport coordination, were finalized to ensure seamless movement,' al-Jazaeri stated, adding that the South Korean visitors expressed strong approval of the infrastructure and event planning. 'They viewed the complex as a modern facility and a reflection of Iraq's growing sports capabilities,' he said. Despite the preparations, only 40,000 tickets had been sold by Thursday afternoon. Organizers attributed the drop to a now-revoked policy bundling tickets with team shirts priced at 10,000 dinars ($7.5). 'The additional cost discouraged buyers. Even after removing the requirement, sales remained below expectations,' said Ghalib al-Zamili, a member of the organizing committee, also citing the Eid holiday, as many families are engaged in travel or celebrations.
