Armed robbers dressed as petrol attendants rob garage during hold-up
According to Johan Oberholzer, the operational manager of Mid Alarms, an undetermined number of suspects descended on Sasol Doornkop on Sunday morning at 01:30, where they held up staff members inside the convenience store.
A reaction officer from Mid Alarms arrived at the Sasol, and during his initial scan of the scene, petrol attendants were walking around outside, and everything seemed normal.
As the reaction officer approached one petrol attendant to ask whether everything was well, the disguised robber pointed a firearm at him, and forced him into the shop, where he was held up with the rest of the hostages.
'The officer could not raise an alarm, and two of the suspects left with his reaction vehicle,' Oberholzer explained.
A second reaction officer also responded minutes later, where things also appeared normal to him, 'The second reaction officer was also held at gunpoint and taken inside.'
According to Oberholzer, the armed robbers then stole cigarettes and other items from the convenience store before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Once the robbers were gone, the SAPS was dispatched.
'The SAPS responded quickly, and our reaction officers successfully managed to recover our stolen vehicle. A Volkswagen GTI was also stolen, but was recovered by the police later that day at a school in Doornkop.'
While another publication reported that two people were shot, Oberholzer refutes those reports, adding that no one was shot or injured during the robbery.
'We have very clear imagery of the two suspects in our reaction vehicle, and we appeal to anyone with information on the suspects to please come forward,' Oberholzer urged.
Although the number of suspects is unknown, Oberholzer said that it was a large group of between six to nine suspects.
Anyone with information that could identify the suspects or assist in their arrest is asked to please call 082 802 6399.

Two arrested after high-speed chase ends in crash
MEMBERS of Marshall Security recovered a stolen vehicle and a range of car break-in tools after a high-speed chase ended in a crash on Saturday (June 14) in Newlands East. Two suspects were detained and handed over to Newlands SAPS. Marshall's Special Operations Team (SOT) were on a routine patrol on Inanda Road when they spotted two VW Polos, a white and a silver sedan, driving at excessive speed. Also read: Effingham robbery suspects arrested, goods recovered 'As the drivers became aware they were being followed, both vehicles suddenly turned off onto Joyce Road toward Newlands. Believing that the white Polo may have been stolen and the silver Polo acting as an escort vehicle, our SOT members initiated pursuit,' said Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell. 'A high-speed chase ended when both vehicles lost control and crashed at the corner of Joyce and Ringside Roads. The white Polo continued up Hippo Road before coming to a stop, at which point two suspects fled on foot. Meanwhile, the silver Polo came to a halt in a residential driveway, where two suspects were apprehended inside the vehicle.' Powell revealed that the white Polo had been reported stolen from the Mayville area. 'The silver Polo was confirmed to be the suspects' own vehicle and was fitted with false registration plates. Upon searching the vehicle, officers uncovered a range of car break-in tools, including multiple vehicle computer boxes, equipment often used to bypass vehicle security systems.' SAPS and Polmed team up for Youth Day
As South Africa celebrates Youth Day, the South African Police Service together with Polmed, have teamed up to provide support to young officers. The National SAPS Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, said SAPS has trained and employed over 30 000 youth between the ages of 18 and 35 in the last three years. 'These young police officers are now deployed to bolster crime combatting efforts at the grassroots level of policing where police visibility and services are most needed', said General Masemola. He said some of the officers are now in community service centres, where they interact directly with victims of crime. General Masemola said they are grooming an additional 4000 officers to become detectives, to enhance the conviction rate. He said a further 5000 officers have received training as Public Order Police unit members. General Masemola said they deploy the members to police protests and crowd gatherings daily. One of the 5000 members is 29-year-old Constable Nsuku Reanoldar Mathonsi, from Burgersfort in Limpopo. She recently won a gold medal at this year's Comrades Marathon. MATHONSI MAKES HISTORY THROUGH POLMED SUPPORT Limpopo SAPS spokesperson, Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, said Mathonsi is the first female officer ever to receive the Robert Mtshali Medal. The Comrade's Marathon awards the medal to runners who complete the race under 9 hours and 10 minutes. 'Mathonsi completed this year's Comrades Marathon in a time of 08:17:33,' said Mashaba. 'As a medical scheme dedicated to the health and wellbeing of South African Police Service members, we are honoured to have been part of her incredible journey,' said Polmed Principal Officer, Neo Khauoe. Khauoe further said that Mathonsi's achievement reflects what members can achieve when they receive holistic support. SHOULD SAPS MAINLY CONSIST OF YOUNG MEMBERS?
