Ranking all 16 SEC football programs by 2025 NCAA academic progress rate
Ranking all 16 SEC football programs by 2025 NCAA academic progress rate
The SEC has been at the forefront of the college football landscape for nearly two decades. Though the Big Ten has won the last two national titles, no conference has had as much success as the SEC. The SEC and the Big Ten have emerged as the top two conferences on the field and also in the classroom.
The NCAA tracks academic progress rates (APR) over a rolling four-year period to determine a program's eligibility. If a team falls below an APR of 930, like Akron did this year, that program isn't eligible for the postseason. It also matters for teams on the bubble of bowl eligibility. It takes a .500 record for a team to be eligible for a bowl game, but in recent years, some 5-7 teams have earned an opportunity to go bowling because of their academic progress rate. APR can be used to break a tie among teams on the fringe of bowl eligibility.
The SEC boasts the No. 2 team in the nation in APR this year, along with the No. 20 team in the nation.
The APR, or Academic Progress Rate, holds institutions accountable for the academic progress of their student-athletes through a team-based metric that accounts for the eligibility and retention of each student-athlete for each academic term.
While the SEC can boast some strong academic success, the Big Ten boasts four teams in the top 20 in the nation in APR. The SEC has just two.
The metric now includes the four-year composite of the 2020-21, 2021-22, 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years. Here's how all 16 SEC teams rank in NCAA academic progress rate.
APR Score: 952
2024 APR: 934 (No. 16)
LSU was just above the cutoff line last year but showed significant improvement to raise their APR by 18 points, the second biggest improvement in the SEC.
APR Score: 956
2024 APR: 951 (No. 14)
Texas A&M fell one spot despite an improved APR. The Aggies were in their first year under Mike Elko after he took over for Jimbo Fisher. It'll be interesting to see how they trend under their new leadership.
14. Tennessee Volunteers
APR Score: 964
2024 APR: 945 (No. 15)
The biggest mover in APR score year over year, Josh Heuepel, dealt with some controversy in the Nico Iamaleava saga. However, the Volunteers made the playoffs, and Heupel has academic improvement to point to on the recruiting trail.
12. (tie) South Carolina Gamecocks
APR Score: 975
2024 APR: 979 (t-No. 6)
Shane Beamer and South Carolina's APR score dropped and they suffered a significant drop in the SEC rankings. But the Gamecocks had a banner year on the field and were just a few plays away from making the College Football Playoff last year.
12. (tie) Oklahoma Sooners
APR Score: 975
2024 APR: 965 (No. 13)
Oklahoma improved its APR score year over year but suffered on the field. A second 6-7 season in Brent Venables put the Sooners in must-win mode for 2025. It's not necessarily playoff or bust, but they have to be in the hunt.
APR Score: 979
2024 APR: 984 (No. 5)
Jeff Lebby's first year at the helm in Starkville didn't yield much success, and the Mississippi State Bulldogs didn't fair well in the classroom as well, dropping three spots and five points total in academic progress rate.
8. (tie) Georgia Bulldogs
APR Score: 979
2024 APR: 968 (No. 12)
Georgia improved four spots in APR and won the SEC title. Amid off-field issues with the program, Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs found success on the field and in the classroom.
APR Score: 979
2024 APR: 971 (No. 11)
The Kentucky Wildcats missed bowl eligibility for the first time since 2015. However, Mark Stoops and the Wildcats earned a bump in academic progress rate.
8. (tie) Vanderbilt Commodores
APR Score: 979
2024 APR: 976 (No. 10)
It was a huge year for Clark Lea and the Vanderbilt Commodores, and they improved in APR along the way. They picked up a big win over Alabama and has the Commodores on the way up with Diego Pavia at quarterback.
7. Ole Miss Rebels
APR Score: 980
2024 APR: 987 (No. 3)
A disappointing 2024 season for Lane Kiffin and the Ole Miss Rebels was matched by a disappointing drop in APR. They didn't have the biggest drop in the rankings, but in point totals, the Rebels fell the most.
6. Florida Gators
APR Score: 982
2024 APR: 981 (t-No. 6)
Florida held steady in APR under Billy Napier. One of the coaches on the hot seat in the SEC, Napier helped Florida improve from 6-7 to 8-5 with the help of D.J. Lagway.
5. Arkansas Razorbacks
APR Score: 983
2024 APR: 979 (No. 9)
Along with Texas, the Arkansas Razorbacks were a big mover in academic progress rate, moving up four spots from last season. The Razorbacks matched the academic success with a three-win improvement from 2023 to 2024.
4. Texas Longhorns
APR Score: 986
2024 APR: 980 (No. 8)
Texas jumped four spots in APR this year after their second consecutive playoff appearance. Steve Sarkisian's recruited well and they're one of the top preseason picks to win the national title in 2025.
APR Score: 989
2024 APR: 990 (No. 2)
A bit of a dip for Eli Drinkwitz and the Missouri Tigers, but they stayed top three in APR. It was a strong year on the field for the Tigers who won 10 games in back-to-back seasons for the first time since the 2013 and 2014 seasons.
2. Auburn Tigers
APR Score: 990
2024 APR: 986 (No. 4)
The other Alabama school earned the No. 2 spot after coming in fourth last year. The Auburn Tigers jumped two spots in academic progress rate this year.
1. Alabama Crimson Tide
APR Score: 998
2024 APR: 997 (No. 1)
Alabama maintained their standing as the top academic program in the SEC. That didn't match the results on the field with loses to Vanderbilt and Oklahoma in 2024. Kalen DeBoer is hoping to turn the Tide's fortunes in 2025 and return to the College Football Playoff.

HC Mike Elko is highly confident in Texas A&M's veteran 2025 offensive line
HC Mike Elko is highly confident in Texas A&M's veteran 2025 offensive line During Mike Elko's assistant coaching career, which included his three year stint as Texas A&M's defensive coordinator (2018-2021), he experienced one of the Aggies' best seasons since the memorable 2012 campaign during the 9-1 2020 COVID-inflicted season, which included an elite performance from Texas A&M's offensive line. Throughout the offseason, included during Wednesday's Houston Coach's Night, Elko has continued to emphasize Texas A&M's veteran offensive line that includes every returning starter from the start of the 2024 season, including center Mark Nabou, who missed the season's entirety after an early lower body injury. Elko also mentioned Texas A&M's deep running back room, headlined by senior back Le'Veon Moss. "If you think back to the core of the 2020 football team, the offensive line is where it all started. We bring back all four tailbacks. That is not something you see all the time." This group's size, experience, and NFL potential, especially left tackle Trey Zuhn, left guard Chase Bisontis, and right guard Ar'maj Reed-Adams, are considered some of the best at their positions, and will provide a significant impact in both pass pro and run blocking. For starting quarterback Marcel Reed, his success starts in the trenches, as the redshirt sophomore looks to improve as a pocket passer, which is vital if the Aggies plan to make it through their tough schedule and earn the program's first College Football Playoff berth. The running game will be emphasized, which is a staple of OC Collin Klein's scheme, but know that when opposing defenses shut down the run game, Marcel Reed will be looked at to take full control from the pocket and deliver strikes down the field, and will solid pass protection, Elko is confident that his starting signal caller can get the job done if the line holds up. Everything Texas A&M HC Mike Elko said during Wednesday's Houston Coach's Night
Everything Texas A&M HC Mike Elko said during Wednesday's Houston Coach's Night Texas A&M's 2025 football season is getting closer by the day, as the Aggies will kick off the new campaign against UTSA in Kyle Field on Saturday, August 31. This offseason, second-year head coach Mike Elko has made the media rounds, and is currently finishing out the annual Coach's Night circuit, which continued on Wednesday night in Houston. Expectations remain high for an Aggie roster filled with talent and experience at every level, and while half of the fan base is still skeptical of the team's progress, Elko is supremely confident that his team is on the right track, as he continued to praise several offensive and defensive leaders, including starting quarterback Marcel Reed and junior linebacker Taurean York. Littered with locker room leadership, it's the play on the field that matters most, so it's fair for the skeptics to continue shouting internally, or externally that offseason quotes are "meaningless" despite Elko's authenticity and honesty compared to former head coach Jimbo Fisher. As the countdown to the 2025 season continues to tick down, here is everything Mike Elko had to say during Wednesday's Houston Coach's Night. Mike Elko on Texas A&M's improvement on defense before taking over as the defensive play-caller. "Everybody keeps asking me that - yes, we will be better on defense." Mike Elko compared Texas A&M's 2025 O-line to the memorable 2020 offensive line. "I think that is what we have this year." Mike Elko on how freshman DE Marco Jones will balance playing football and baseball. "down-the-road conversation," but Jones participated in some of the baseball scrimmages before the season and will be "pretty much exclusively football" this fall. Mike Elko briefly reflects on his first season with the program When I look back on everything that has been done in our first year at Texas A&M, it was a foundational year. That's how I would describe it." "We felt the first thing we had to do as a staff was establish a culture. We wanted to build a program that resembles this great university." Mike Elko on how he views Texas A&M's football future "Where this program is going? It's pointed to the sky. We talk about the indicators that show success. Retention is a big part of it… We are proud of keeping all of our coaches and 16 starters." Mike Elko on the 2025 roster's veteran leadership "We have 23 kids on our roster who will play their last year of college football. We are an older roster." Mike Elko on the team's offensive strengths in the trenches "If you think back to the core of the 2020 football team, the offensive line is where it all started. We bring back all four tailbacks. That is not something you see all the time." Mike Elko provided an update that RB Le'Veon Moss "got some work in" on Monday. Mike Elko is well acquainted with new WR KC Concepcion, who he faced during his two-year coaching career at Duke. "I played against him his freshman year when I was at Duke. He has been a really mature kid. He has that captain make-up." "Mario Craver came from Mississippi State. If you ask our corners, he is the toughest one they covered last year." Mike Elko's confidence in QB Marcel Reed continued on Wednesday. "We are really excited about him. He can make plays with his arm and his feet." "I think you will see him take a really, really big step forward." Mike Elko on LB Scooby Williams playing through his meniscus tear during the entire 2024 season. "Scooby Williams tore his meniscus on the first drive of the first game last year. It was the same play Dalton Brooks got ejected. You didn't see the best of Scooby." Mike Elko on his fiery postgame comments after Texas A&M's bowl game loss to USC. "We didn't meet my or our standard for what defense should look like. Part of that is Year 1. Part of that is the Tyreek Chappell injury, so we had to play more zone. Part of it is coaching it and the players doing it." Mike Elko on if NIL has changed his coaching methods "Not at all. I made a decision when this started that I wasn't going to coach differently. We have established a standard for how you should act and behave." Mike Elko (asked by a fan in the audience) on playing Texas this year on Black Friday. "I will say this. Our team is very excited for that Friday night across the state. We will leave it at that." Mike Elko on the state of Texas A&M recruiting. "We are still very committed to bringing in a large high school class every year, around 24 to 26 guys. We still go through the recruiting process the way we always have." Mike Elko on what he believes will take Texas A&M to the "next level." "It's NFL talent. The amount of talent you have will be measured by the number of draft picks you have. The last seven to eight years, it's not comparative. For us to get where we want to go, that has to happen." Mike Elko with the quote of the night to end Wednesday's event. "I think this is really important. Our goal is to build the best program we are capable of being… When we do that, it won't matter who we play or who is in the SEC. No one will be able to stop us." Notre Dame football's top-5 offensive players entering the 2025 season
Long gone are the days where Notre Dame football's offense has been in question, as the Irish showed last year they can score with the best in the country. The Mike Denbrock-led offense scored 36.1 points-per-game last year, good for No. 10 nationally, and while they did lose some weapons, most notably quarterback Riley Leonard, there is plenty of returning talent that will carry this unit. Advertisement While the season is still a few months away, we are getting plenty of new information about the direction of the team and what to expect from the Irish in 2025. Find out below my top-5 offensive players for Notre Dame this fall as of early June. No. 5 - Quarterback CJ Carr There has yet to be a decision between Carr and Kenny Minchey, but you have to expect that Freeman will go with the higher upside player considering they both have virtually no playing experience. Carr was the No. 68 overall recruit in his class in the 247Sports Composite, while Minchey was No. 170 in the next cycle. Both are more than capable of running the Irish offense, but at this point with Steve Angeli no longer with the program, Carr is the frontrunner in my opinion. No. 4 - Wide receiver Jaden Greathouse The breakout is coming, especially after Greathouse showed the nation in the last two games of the College Football Playoff that he's a gamebreaking talent. He accounted for 13 receptions for 223-yards and three touchdowns, as he torched both Penn State and Ohio State. While the quarterback position is still a question mark, we know that Greathouse can make plays. Notre Dame will play him more in the slot, creating mismatches for him to exploit due to a player later on this list. No. 3 - Running back Jadarian Price Price was second on the team in rushing attempts last year, and averaged 6.2 yards-per-carry, which was just behind the team leaders. He scored seven times as well, and looks to be ready to take the next step this fall. While he will share carries with a player later on this list, Price still seems poised to top last year's impressive numbers. No. 2 - Wide receiver Malachi Fields While Fields wasn't able to practice with the Irish during the spring due to transfer rules, he's going to be a difference-maker this fall. Over the last two years he's caught at least 55 receptions, which would have been first on last year's Notre Dame team. His five touchdowns would have been first, as well as his 808 receiving yards. No Irish receiver has topped those marks since Kevin Austin in 2021, and there's not doubt in my mind that Fields is a much better player. No. 1 - Running back Jeremiyah Love This was an easy choice, as it should be. Love is one of the best players nationally, is getting plenty of pre-season love and could end up in New York after the season concludes. Coming off a year with 1,125 rushing yards with 17 touchdowns to go along with 237 receiving yards and another two scores, the Heisman talk is legit. As long as Love stays healthy, he's one of the best players in the nation. This article originally appeared on Fighting Irish Wire: Predicting Notre Dame's top-5 offensive players of 2025
