Thailand commits £880m to F1 bid with street circuit in Bangkok

Independent11 hours ago

Thailand 's cabinet has approved a $1.2billion (£880m) bid to host an F1 race on the streets of Bangkok.
The target for the south-east Asian country is to be on the schedule from 2028, with an initial five-year contract in place.
Tourism minister Sorawong Thienthong mentioned the figure at a press conference last week, with prime minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra having met with F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali earlier this year to discuss plans for a race in the Thai capital.
Thailand does already have a FIA Grade 1 circuit in Buriram, about 300km north-east of Bangkok, but the allure of hosting a street track in the capital is said to be the driving factor behind the bid.
However, with the 2026 schedule already set at 24 races – a number Domenicali has previously insisted he is not keen to go over – it remains to be seen where Thailand would slot into any future calendar and which race it would replace.
The Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort falls off the calendar after next year's finale, while from 2028 Spa-Francorchamps will host a race once every two years under a new rotation policy. Imola, which dropped off after this year's race, and Barcelona are also hopeful of being included in a rotational deal.
F1 is also keen to host a race in Africa, for the first time since 1993. South Africa – with Kyalami in Johannesburg and Cape Town the two listed bids – Rwanda and Morocco have all put broad proposals on the table.
Meanwhile, Alex Albon, the British-Thai driver who races under the Thai flag, has also given his firm backing to the Thai bid, during a visit to the country a few months ago.
'It's moving along, obviously nothing's finalised but it's really good to see the commitment from Thailand,' Albon said.
'They're taking it very seriously. I think as a product, they have a very strong product. If you see the projects… if you see how serious they are.
'I've seen a generic look at what they're trying to do with it. And yeah, it looks good, I don't think I can say [much more]. So I'd rather stay quiet on it. Again, I don't want to say too much but I'm following a lot of interesting events.'
F1 currently has seven Asian races on the calendar – China, Japan, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Qatar and Abu Dhabi – with Thailand bidding to become the eighth, which would result in a third of the calendar being hosted in Asia.

Fashion Is Obsessed With Formula 1 – And You Can Shop The Celeb-Approved Styles

Naomi Campbell DJ-ing at the Monaco Grand Prix, Jennifer Lopez walking the paddock in a pink leather jumpsuit at the Saudi Arabia race, and Blackpink's Lisa and Timothée Chalamet spotted visiting the F1 teams at the Miami Grand Prix mean it's official: the world's most fashionable people, not to mention a host of luxury brands, have fallen in love with Formula One. Style and speed are natural bedfellows. 'Throughout history, there's been a connection of romance and glamour with speed sports,' says Mai Ikuzawa, founder of the lifestyle label Team Ikuzawa, and who grew up pit-side as daughter of Japanese racing legend Tetsu Ikuzawa. 'There is a hero-factor in racing drivers risking their lives in high-speed machines. People romanticise that – it's hard to find another sport that connects high adrenaline with such luxury and glamour.' Naomi Campbell ©Tag Heuer Alongside a range of racing-inspired apparel, Team Ikuzawa has also collaborated with TAG Heuer on a sell-out chronograph. The watchmaker this year became the official timekeeper of F1, as parent company LVMH signed on a 10-year global partnership. Meanwhile, F1 fandom is about to hit fever pitch on 25 June, when the much-anticipated F1: The Movie hits cinemas. Featuring Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Damson Idris and Kerry Condon, expect a seat-gripping ride alongside some stellar performances. As well as the movie bringing the racetrack to a new audience this summer, brands are taking note of the sport anew as the female fanbase reaches a record high. Today's F1 viewers are more than 40% female, notably thanks to the hit Netflix series Drive To Survive. According to a report by More Than Equal, an organisation that aims to develop the first female F1 world champion, female fans are more likely to be introduced to F1 through lifestyle and social media content, friends and family, while male audiences have engaged with motorsport though live broadcasts. No wonder the likes of Charlotte Tilbury, Tommy Hilfiger and TAG Heuer have all partnered with the F1 Academy, which seeks to increase female participation in motorsport (and which now has its own Netflix series, too). This is being translated into real products as well: cue the upcoming collaboration between luxury ski wear label Perfect Moment and the BWT Alpine Formula One Team, now available to pre-order. The line of skiwear and base layers, alongside après-ski hoodies, T-shirts and accessories, parlays the two brands' French roots and passion for racing suits that are 'built for high speeds and sharp turns,' says Jane Gottschalk, Perfect Moment co-founder and creative director. 'F1 has become a global movement, it's no longer just about the race – but culture, community and the lifestyle that surrounds it,' she says. Schiff credits Lewis Hamilton with upping the ante. 'He's been at the forefront of bringing fashion into the space and allowing people to showcase themselves across their wardrobes,' Schiff says of the seven-time F1 world champion and co-chair of last month's Met Gala. 'Now we have this incredible, almost red carpet of drivers walking into the paddock... it's had a real trickle-down effect on the community. Everyone wants to show up at the Grand Prix looking their best.' In the meantime, motorsport remains one of the most exciting things to watch. 'In a world of social media and AI where glamour and luxury can be fake, the idea of making sportsmen heroes is really relevant,' says Ikuzawa. 'F1 drivers are the world's top athletes and a connection with real, authentic persona and talent? That's the ultimate luxury.' 1. Perfect Moment X BWT Alpine Formula One Team 2. Brazilian tourist found dead days after fall hiking Indonesian volcano

Brazilian hiker Juliana Marins, 27, was found dead on Tuesday after falling off a cliff on Mount Rinjani, Indonesia's second highest volcano, over the weekend. Marins was hiking with five friends on Saturday when she slipped on the 3,726-metre mountain. Rescue efforts, involving 50 people, were hampered for four days by adverse weather, difficult terrain, and poor visibility. Initially located at a depth of 150 meters, Marins had slipped further to 500 meters by Monday morning due to the soft, sandy terrain. The Mount Rinjani hiking track will be closed to facilitate evacuation and as a mark of respect for Ms Marins and her family.

Ogura steps down as Singapore coach for personal reasons

June 24 (Reuters) - Tsutomu Ogura has stepped down as head coach of the Singapore national team for personal reasons, the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) announced on Tuesday. The Japanese coach took charge in February last year, guiding Singapore to the semi-finals of the ASEAN Championship. "Mr. Ogura informed the FAS of his decision several weeks ago, citing the need to return to his home country to attend to pressing personal matters," it said in a statement. "The FAS respects Mr. Ogura's decision and extends its sincere appreciation for his professionalism, commitment, and contribution to Singapore football during his time at the helm." Following Ogura's departure, former Tampines Rovers head coach Gavin Lee will step in as the country's interim manager.
