UK would back giving German missiles to Ukraine
The UK would support Germany if it decides to give long-range Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine, The Telegraph reported on Wednesday, citing British government sources.
London has long backed arming Kiev with the German-made weapons, which have a 500km range and are capable of striking targets deep into Russian territory, the report stated. Moscow has warned that supplying long-range missiles to Kiev and allowing it to strike Russian territory will be considered an escalation of hostilities.
'We continue to work with our partners, including Germany, to equip Ukraine as best we can to defend its sovereign territory,'
a British foreign policy official told the outlet, commenting on the potential Taurus deliveries.
The report follows recent remarks by incoming German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who signaled he was willing to supply Taurus missiles to Kiev.
'I have always said that I would do it,'
Merz told German state broadcaster ARD on Sunday.

'Our European partners are already supplying cruise missiles… The British are doing it, the French are doing it, and the Americans are doing it,'
he added, referencing the UK's Storm Shadow and France's Scalp missiles respectively.
The move must be agreed upon with Berlin's European partners, Merz said. His CDU party has said the missiles could be used to strike Russian command centers and supply routes, including the Kerch Bridge to Crimea.
Merz's stance contrasts sharply with that of outgoing Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who has repeatedly refused to give Kiev Taurus missiles and warned that the move could escalate the conflict and draw Germany directly into war with Moscow.
Merz is expected to take office in May, once his Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Scholz's Social Democrats (SPD) finalize a coalition agreement. CDU defense spokesman Roderich Kiesewetter told The Telegraph that the missile delivery issue
'remains a point of contention'
in coalition talks.

SPD members have expressed concern over the Taurus' range and power, arguing it poses a greater escalation risk than British or French systems. Party leader Matthias Miersch this week suggested Merz might change course once he receives classified intelligence on the missiles.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, an SPD member, has previously stated there are
'many good arguments'
against the delivery, citing confidential national security concerns.
Moscow has repeatedly warned that Western arms supplies won't stop it from achieving its goals in the Ukraine conflict and that such deliveries only drag out the conflict and hinder peace efforts.

Envoy to Ukraine to become Germany's top spy
Germany's ambassador to Ukraine, Martin Jager, will soon be appointed as the head of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND), Der Spiegel has claimed. Under the new leadership, the agency is expected to get a boost in funding, as well as 'more flexibility' in conducting overseas espionage operations, the media outlet reported. Since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, Berlin has been one of Kiev's top backers in terms of weapons deliveries. Under the new chancellor, Friedrich Merz, Germany has doubled down on these policies, saying that Ukraine could receive long-range Taurus cruise missiles and pledging to help Kiev produce its own long-range weapons. In its article from Wednesday, Der Spiegel suggested that Merz had already made the decision to appoint Jager as the next BND president. According to the publication, the BND will also see a major reorganization and an expansion of its intelligence gathering activities. Der Spiegel described Jager as 'one of the most experienced crisis diplomats in the German Foreign Office,' citing his tenures as the German ambassador to Afghanistan and Iraq before his appointment as Berlin's envoy in Kiev in 2023. Speaking to Ukrainian media last year, the German diplomat insisted that 'Ukraine's future is in NATO,' with a 'clear' path to full membership once the conflict with Russia is over. Moscow has repeatedly described Kiev's aspirations to join the military bloc as one of the primary reasons behind the escalation of hostilities in February 2022. In its outline for a potential peace agreement, the Kremlin has emphasized that Ukraine must adopt permanent neutrality. In a separate interview with Ukrainian media in 2023, Jager stated that Germany's goal was to help Kiev 'win this war,' which, according to the envoy, meant the 'complete restoration of the territorial integrity of Ukraine.' When asked to clarify, he said that Kiev should, among other things, regain control over Crimea, which voted to join Russia in a 2014 referendum. Earlier this week, incumbent BND chief Bruno Kahl claimed that Russia could attack NATO in the coming years, as 'there are people in Moscow who no longer believe that NATO's Article 5 would be upheld,' especially with respect to the Baltic States. The Kremlin, for its part, has consistently denied harboring any aggressive plans toward the military bloc. Commenting on Berlin's increasing antagonistic moves of late, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned in late May that 'Germany is sliding down the same slippery slope it already followed a couple of times in the last century – down toward its own collapse.'

White British children are minority at one in four schools in England
White British children are currently a minority in one in four schools across England, The Telegraph has reported, citing government records. The report, published on Saturday, was based on the results of school census data collected from more than 21,500 educational institutions across the country in early 2025. According to the figures, in 72 English schools there are no white children at all, while in 454 schools they make up less than 2% of the pupils. At Rockwood Academy in Birmingham, none of the 1,084 students were recorded in the census as 'white British,' while there were only 12 out of 2,779 attending Loxford School in the London borough of Redbridge, The Telegraph reported. The 'demographic shift' is most visible in cities such as London, Birmingham, Manchester, Bradford, and Leicester, the paper said. In the capital, white British children are a minority in schools in all 32 boroughs, with the exception of Bromley, where they make up 50.3%. In Newham and Harrow, there are only 5% and 7% of white children, respectively, the report said. 'The school census data demonstrates that the white British share of the young population is in decline in many areas,' The Telegraph noted. Last week, a report came out forecasting that white British people will become a minority in the UK population in the early 2060s. According to the paper, which was based on analysis of migration, birth and death rates data, by the end of the century their share will drop from the current 73% to around 33.7%. The author of the study, Buckingham University Professor Matt Goodwin, said that his predictions raise 'profound questions about the capacity of the UK state to both absorb and manage this scale of demographic change.' Goodwin stressed that they are certain to provoke a 'considerable degree of anxiety, concern and political opposition' among many voters, which 'need to be… addressed if the UK is to avoid considerable political turbulence and polarization in the years and decades ahead.'

Russians find new biggest enemy to replace US
Russians do not consider the US 'the most unfriendly country' anymore, and the title now goes to Germany, according to a survey by the Levada Center, a Western-funded organization which has been designated as a 'foreign agent' in Russia. The US has lost the top spot for the first time in 13 years, dropping to fourth place in the poll, which was published on Thursday. Only 40% of those surveyed mentioned the US among Russia's primary enemies, with the number dropping by 36% compared to last year, it said. Attitudes towards America shifted with the return of US President Donald Trump. Since his inauguration, the White House has been making efforts to broker a diplomatic solution to the Ukraine conflict, the pollster noted. According to the study, Germany is now in first place, with 56% of respondents describing it as an 'unfriendly country' towards Russia, followed by the UK at 49% and Ukraine at 43%. Before the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022, only 16% of the Russians considered Berlin an enemy, the Levada Center's data suggests. German chancellor Friedrich Merz, who assumed office in early May, has intensified aggressive rhetoric towards Russia, while also making steps to boost military aid provided to Kiev by Berlin during the conflict with Moscow. Last month, Merz said that Ukraine would be allowed to use Western-supplied weapons against Russia without range limitations. He claimed that would be 'possible' to provide Kiev with German Taurus missiles, which have a range of over 500 kilometers and are capable of reaching targets deep within Russian territory, including Moscow. The new chancellor also pledged to assist the government of Vladimir Zelensky with the production of long-range weapons inside Ukraine. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reacted to the statements by Merz by stressing that Berlin's 'direct involvement in the war is now obvious.' 'Germany is sliding down the same slippery slope it already followed a couple of times in the last century – down toward its own collapse,' Lavrov said, referring to the defeats suffered by the country in the First and Second World Wars. The Levada Center also asked the respondents about the countries they consider Russia's 'closest friends.' Belarus (80%), China (64%), Kazakhstan (36%), India (32%) and North Korea (30%) were the top five.
