Edu dept mulls various reforms to improve results of students

Ranchi: The school education and literacy department has prepared a roadmap for reforming the examination system and also improving education standards in govt schools this year.

Addressing a function held for the declaration of JAC Class X results, department secretary Uma Shankar Singh said the council has decided to conduct the 2026 Class X examination within the first two weeks of February and the intermediate examinations between the first and the third week of the same month. He also said evaluation of the answer papers would be completed in March and the results would be declared in April first week.
Singh further said his department has asked the JAC to inform about additional expenditures and manpower requirements to implement the new schedule. "There should be no excuse at the moment," Singh said.
In future, college teachers would also be engaged in the evaluation of answers sheets so that the workload of school teachers is lessened and currently, the latter are engaged in the assessment for around two months, which affects teaching in schools, Singh said, highlighting that in some subjects, the number of teachers in govt schools is also less.
Under the roadmap, the govt has also decided to conduct oral examinations for Classes I and II, Singh said, informing that examinations for Classes V to VIII would be in the form of short and long answers instead of objective-type questions, at present.
"There is also a proposal to transfer the responsibility of conducting the Class VIII examination from JAC to the Jharkhand Council for Educational Research and Training," the official said.

Speaking on the steps taken to improve education quality, the education secretary said when the Santhal Paragana division was ranked last in 2024, the department conducted a survey to locate the schools with poor performance. "Later, instructions were issued to ensure proper attendance of students and teachers in these schools. The district officers concerned were also instructed in this and the measures brought results," he said.
The secretary further said regular assessments for improved learning would be conducted every month and the reports would be submitted on e-vidya vahini within a week. "This will track the below-average students and they would be helped to improve in their studies," he added.
