LA mayor issues city curfew TONIGHT as violence reaches 'tipping point'
Mayor Karen Bass issued a curfew for downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday 'to stop the vandalism, to stop the looting,' following four days of protests against
Trump's immigration crackdown
in the city.
She said in a news conference that she had declared a local emergency and that the curfew will run from 8 p.m. Tuesday until 6 a.m. Wednesday. The curfew will be in place in a 1 square mile (2.59 square kilometer) section of downtown that includes
the area where protests have occurred
since Friday.
'We reached a tipping point' after
23 businesses were looted
, Bass said.

Mayor Bass said that the curfew is likely to continue for several days, until law enforcement and elected leaders deem it unnecessary.

The curfew will likely last for several days, she said, and will only end after a consultation is made with law enforcement and elected leaders. It will not apply to individuals living within the designated area, individuals experiencing homelessness, credentialed media or public safety emergency personnel, according to LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell.
The mayor suggested earlier Tuesday that she had been considering a curfew if violence broke out again, but said it would not be necessary citywide.
The curfew zone
in downtown will extend from the 5 Freeway to the 110 Freeway, and from the 10 Freeway to where the 5 and 110 Freeways merge, Bass said.

Police have arrested more than 150 people during the four days of protest, which
California
lawmakers said have been mostly peaceful. Some protestors were seen lobbing water bottles at CHP officers Sunday.
Members of
Los Angeles
law enforcement have been filmed
shooting a non-lethal rubber bullet
at an Australian reporter,
spraying tear gas
and
throwing flash grenades
at protestors, and attempting to
stomp a protestor while on horseback
.
Bass and other Los Angeles officials have asked protestors to remain nonviolent, though the appearance of graffiti on downtown buildings has gone against her requests to Angelenos.
Protestors temporarily halted traffic on the 101 Freeway Sunday when a large crowd spilled onto the two-way, multi-lane highway.

Israel to deport six more activists detained on Gaza aid boat, rights group says
Israel is deporting six more activists who were detained when it seized an aid boat bound for the war-ravaged Gaza Strip, according to the rights group representing them. The six include Rima Hassan, a French member of the European parliament who Israel had previously barred from entering Israel and the Palestinian territories, citing her support for boycotts of the country. 🚨 Messages from Rima and other members of the Freedom Flotilla crew.#FreedomFlotilla #FreeMadleen — Rima Hassan (@RimaHas) June 11, 2025 They were among 12 passengers, including climate campaigner Greta Thunberg, aboard the Madleen, a boat that sought to break Israel's blockade of Gaza and deliver a symbolic amount of aid. Israel seized the vessel early on Monday and deported Miss Thunberg and three others the following day. The last two activists are expected to be deported on Friday, according to Adalah, a local human rights group representing them. It said the activists were subjected to 'mistreatment, punitive measures, and aggressive treatment, and two volunteers were held for some period of time in solitary confinement'. Israeli authorities declined to comment on their treatment. Activists, including Greta Thunberg, sailed on the Madleen, a boat that sought to break Israel's blockage of Gaza (Salvatore Cavalli/AP) Israel says it treats detainees in a lawful manner and investigates any allegations of abuse. Israel portrayed the voyage as a media spectacle, dubbing it the 'selfie yacht'. It says the blockade, which it has imposed in various forms along with Egypt since Hamas seized power in 2007, is needed to prevent the militant group from importing arms. Critics view it as a collective punishment of Gaza's roughly 2 million Palestinians. The Israeli Foreign Ministry said those activists who signed deportation documents would be deported immediately, while those who refused would be brought before a judicial authority to authorise their deportation in keeping with Israeli law. The activists have protested that they had no intention of entering Israel and were brought there against their will. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition, which organised the journey, said it was aimed at protesting Israel's blockade of Gaza and ongoing military campaign there, which experts say has pushed the territory to the brink of famine more than 20 months into the Israel-Hamas war.

Los Angeles 'safe and sound for last two nights'
Los Angeles "was safe and sound for the last two nights", US President Donald Trump has said, as he hailed troops for helping to restore order in the city after days of anti-deportation protests. "Our great National Guard, with a little help from the Marines, put the LA Police in a position to effectively do their job," Mr Trump said on Truth Social, adding that without the military, the city "would be a crime scene like we haven't seen in years". The mostly peaceful protests ignited last week over a sudden escalation in efforts to apprehend migrants who were in the country illegally. But there were also pockets of violence, including the burning of self-driving taxis and hurling stones at police. Mr Trump deployed several thousand National Guard troops and some 700 active-duty marines over the objections of Democratic California governor Gavin Newsom, the first such action by a US President in decades. In his post, Mr Trump said Mr Newsom "had totally lost control of the situation". "He should be saying THANK YOU for saving his ass, instead of trying to justify his mistakes and incompetence!!!" he added. Similar protests also ignited in other cities across the United States, as California prepared for a legal showdown of Mr Trump's deployment of the military. A second night of curfew was in place as city leaders tried to get a handle on the after-dark vandalism and looting that scarred a few city blocks in the 1,300-square kilometre metropolis.
