Star Trek Fans Were Already In For An Exciting Summer, But It Just Got Even Better Because Discovery's Shazad Latif Is Leading A New Sci-Fi Series

It's been a long wait, but finally, the wait for upcoming Star Trek shows is almost over. Pretty soon, we'll be spending a summer watching new adventures with a Paramount+ subscription, but that's not the only thing Trekkies should be checking out on the 2025 TV schedule.
A new sci-fi show from Discovery star Shazad Latif is coming to AMC, and damn, does it look good! While it's not set in space, the spirit of traveling into the great unknown in search of adventure is still alive, and I can't wait to see the actor I'm sad didn't appear in Section 31 back in action.
Shazad Latif stars as Nemo in an adaptation of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea in Nautilus. This story will follow Nemo's plot for revenge against the East India Mercantile Company. With the help of some fellow prisoners, they steal a prototype submarine and set out to find a fabled Viking treasure. It sounds wild enough, but the trailer really drives home how awesome this series might be:
It's been so long since I've seen Shazad Latif as Ash Tyler that I forgot how great of an actor he was. It'll be great to see him as a lead in a series in Nautilus, in a captain's role we never really got to see during Discovery. Hey, this might even lead to him being welcomed back to the franchise should the decision-makers at Paramount see him thrive in this new series at AMC set for June 29th.
In addition to Nautilus and all that fun, we're finally getting the return of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds for Season 3. The Season 2 finale ended on a dramatic cliffhanger, and I know I've been dying to find out what will become of the crew when they go head-to-head with the Gorn.

There's a lot to look forward to in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3, especially since Season 4 is already confirmed and has been in production. Plus, we also have Starfleet Academy coming in 2026, so the future is looking bright for Trek once again.
Much like Trekkies have embraced shows like The Orville as Trek-adjacent shows we can love, I hope the same happens for Nautilus. Shazad Latif had no shortage of admirers in the fandom when he was a part of the Discovery crew as Ash Tyler, and the new AMC series seems to have the same adventure vibes as the standard Trek series. It's always said that we've explored the ocean less than space, so you might even say Nautilus will "boldly go" a direction the space series hasn't before.
As mentioned, Nautilus premieres on AMC on June 29th, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 is coming to Paramount+ on Thursday, July 17th. I know I'm psyched for the possibility of a double feature viewing of both shows each week, and I encourage others to check it out and see if they wish to do the same.

The Walking Dead: Dead City is going to have to hang a 'Help Wanted' sign ahead of Season 3. Halfway through Season 2, the AMC drama killed off not one or two but three characters and forewarned us that a fourth wouldn't be around for much longer. Who went down for the count? Negan was thisclose to recruiting him and his gang to fight with the Burazi against the New Babylon Federation's would-be methane thieves when The Croat came in and mucked everything up. Next in line, a power-mad Narvaez seized control of the Foragers' hideout and hanged Roksana when she refused to ally her people with the New Babylon Federation. Maggie was supposed to follow her into the noose, but she was saved at the last minute by Ginny, who felt bad about blabbing that Perlie hadn't killed Negan the way legend had it that he had. Or, for that matter at all. But wait, there was more. As walkers swarmed the real-life game of hangman, a reanimated Roksana feasted on Narvaez. And after all that, Maggie, Perlie & Co. found themselves at Bruegel's mercy. (Having seen how he treated Tony the Bodyguard, I think we can all agree that that is the last place anyone would ever want to be!) Now then, back to the killing. Egged on by Negan, The Croat confronted The Dama about her shoddy treatment of him. Later, all Negan had to do was squash The Dama's precious pet rat and let her think that The Croat had done it. Once again, the two of them argued, this time about which of them was nothing without the other. When all was said and done, a fire had broken out and The Croat had let The Dama burn. Finally, we saw that Ginny had been bitten while saving Maggie. In other words, the girl's days were numbered. So what do you think? Will she even try to kill Negan the next time she sees him? Jon Hamm on Consuming So Many Fake Cigarettes and Onion Water ‘Vodkas' for ‘Mad Men': ‘Oh, The Breath Was Lovely!'
Ten years after 'Mad Men' wrapped, stars Jon Hamm and John Slattery still have fond memories of the landmark AMC drama. Well, perhaps except for the smoking. And the onion water. Reuniting Saturday at Austin's ATX TV Festival. Hamm and Slattery spoke to moderator Noah Hawley (who worked with Hamm on the most recent season of 'Fargo') about the legacy of the show, how it still resonates with both them and their fans — and yes, all those cigarettes. Replied Hamm: 'Oh, it was not. Yeah, I think somebody did a count, and in the pilot alone, I spoke 75 cigarettes… They are fake cigarettes, but that just means that there's no nicotine in them. It doesn't mean you're not burning something.' Because 'Mad Men' was shot in Los Angeles but took place in New York, much of the filming was done indoors. 'We didn't go outside, which was awesome and not awesome,' Hamm said. 'The whole thing, the whole stage is full of fake cigarette smoke.' Slattery noted that the fake cigarettes meant that they were smoking rose petals and marshmallow. While that may sound nice, it wasn't. Then, add to that what was used to replicate a vodka martini: A glass of water with onion in it. 'Oh, the breath was lovely,' quipped Hamm. Slattery pointed out that the 'vodka' was fake, but the onion was very real. 'Pop another pearl onion in your glass of water, and then smoke 26 more fake cigarettes and it's 9:30 in the morning!' he said. At least it was slightly better than smoking real cigarettes — something that Hamm said 'some of the younger actors' tried to do while shooting the 'Mad Men' pilot. 'They were like, 'We're gonna smoke real cigarettes. We really want to, feel it and do it,' ' Hamm recalled. 'And I was like, 'let me know how that goes.' And within three days, they were yellow and sallow. This is a terrible idea.' Hawley pointed out that it's similar to another trick that actors soon learn: Take very small bites when eating food on camera, since you'll be doing it over and over again. 'And move [the food] around the plate,' Hamm added. 'We can't all be Brad Pitt. Would that we could!' Cigarettes, of course, were an important part of setting the scene for what it was like to be an advertising exec on Madison Avenue in the early 1960s. 'I remember at some point, having a conversation with the executives at AMC,' Hamm said. 'They said, 'Do they have to smoke?' That was like, Are you fucking kidding me? Yes, they literally have to. They're addicted to cigarettes. It's kind of why they're sold. They're super popular!' During the panel, Hamm reminisced about how much 'Mad Men' changed his life. 'I started that when I was 35 years old. Went right through to the age of 45,' he said. 'So it's kind of a transitional moment in life and time. Our real lives happen, relationships started and ended, and people had babies, got married and got divorced, and all this shit happened in the real world. It almost seemed displaced from that in a lot, in a weird way, because so much of working on the show was stepping into a time capsule for real. 'If you guys could jump back in time and visit the set, it literally was picture perfect,' he added. 'When you're in gear and smoking cigarette and looking out the fake window, the fake hanging part of Midtown, it was believable. Obviously it's a tremendous honor, and it's a wonderful thing to have worked on and contribute to something that has lasted this long. I'm glad I'm still alive, basically because of the amount of cigarettes I smoked. But the amount of work we put into it feels commensurate with the amount of love we're getting back, which is a nice feeling as well. So that's pretty awesome. I mean, to be sitting here at this incredible festival talking about something you did a decade ago, and have this many people show up just to hear it is tremendous.' Slattery had a similar reflection on his 'Mad Men' experience. 'It felt like a parallel life,' he said. 'There were about six months a year we would do this, and then we would go away. For a couple of years there we were pretty sure we were going to do it again. And to be in the hands of those writers and those designers and those other actors, you had this incredibly intimate relationship with these people that was not your real life. But was just as real and just as demanding and complicated. Yeah, it was all fake, and we went home at the end of the day, but it was such a gift. I think, to pretty much a person, we clocked that right away.' Aaron Paul Shares The Relentless Prank Bryan Cranston Would Pull On The Set Of ‘Breaking Bad': 'He Would Get Everybody In On It'
In spite of the often dark and grueling material of AMC's seminal crime drama Breaking Bad, it's nice to know stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul had a little fun on set — in the former's case, perhaps a bit too much fun. During a recent appearance on Sean Evans' popular Hot Ones series, on which Cranston has previously appeared, Paul relayed a hilarious behind-the-scenes tidbit, a relentless hallmark of production in which his co-star would repeatedly prank him about his character's death. Paul then recalled an instance where The Studio actor came out of the production office and solemnly beckoned him to come over, a seeming harbinger of bad news. 'He goes, 'Come here, it's OK,' and he gives me this long hug,' the Black Mirror actor recounted. 'I'm like, 'What are you doing?' He's like, 'At least you go out in a big way, huh?' And I'm like, 'What are you talking about?' He goes, 'Did you read the latest script?' I go, 'No.' He goes, 'Oh, well, just read it, and I'm here if you need me.'' As such, Paul said he 'sprinted' into the office and asked to read the script — but upon perusing the final pages, he found his Jesse Pinkman alive and (mostly) well. 'He just made it seem like I died,' he said of his Dos Hombres Mezcal co-founder, 'but he would not stop, and he would get everybody in on it, like the costume designers said, 'Hey we gotta do your measurements for the casket, so if you could stay after work, that would be great.' I'm like, 'What are you talking about?'' In fact, his character was originally scripted to die at the end of Season 1, but the writers opted to keep Jesse alive as a result of Paul's chemistry with Cranston and the thematic foil his character offers Walter White; his character notably returns in the 2019 film El Camino. Paul certainly had the last laugh, turning to the camera and triumphantly declaring, 'But I made it!' (And, as we all know, a certain former teacher of chemistry did not.) A juggernaut of the prestige television era, Breaking Bad would go on to be nominated for 58 Emmys throughout its five-season run from 2008 through 2013, winning 16 statuettes, including three consecutive wins for Cranston (who also won a fourth as a producer on the show) and three total wins for Paul. The Vince Gilligan-created series also spawned the equally beloved Bob Odenkirk vehicle Better Call Saul, which clinched 53 Emmy nods but did not receive any awards during its run from 2015 to 2022.
