Calls for better lighting, crosswalk near Baymeadows Rd. bar where teacher carrying son hit, killed
The friends of a Jacksonville teacher who was killed, along with his 1-year-old son, are calling for change.
They want to see a crosswalk and better lighting where the man and toddler were hit by a car Friday night and died.

Mitchell Patch, who taught at Bayview Elementary School, was carrying his son, Everett, near Wicked Barley Brewing in the 4100 block of Baymeadows Road when they were struck by a Honda.
They were both pronounced dead at the scene.
Friends of the family are petitioning the mayor, Jacksonville Transit Authority, and Florida Department of Transportation to install a crosswalk near the bar.
The nearest crosswalks, they say, are 1,600 feet away at San Jose Boulevard, or 3,400 feet away at Craven Road.

The school's principal sent the following message to parents about Patch, who was also a math coach at the school:
Good afternoon Bayview Braves,
This is Principal York, and it is with a heavy heart that I convey some very sad news impacting our school family.
I am sorry to share with you that one of our beloved staff members, our Math Coach Mr. Mitchell Patch, and his young son died tragically last night when they were struck by a car while crossing a street.
We will all certainly remember Mr. Patch for his incredible commitment to students and to the teaching profession. He was a dedicated educator and well loved and respected member of our Brave family.
Our sympathies go out to Mr. Patch's family, friends, and our entire school community during this difficult time. I am deeply saddened, and I know the students, staff and family members who new Mr. Patch will miss him tremendously.
To support our school community, we will have specially trained school counselors and social workers on campus on Monday, and additional support will be made available as needed. Please join me in keeping Mr. Patch's friends, family, and loved ones in your thoughts during this difficult time.

Bloomfield officer shot during traffic stop dies
Jun. 1—A Bloomfield police officer has died, less than a week after being shot during a traffic stop. At about 10:55 p.m., May 26, Timothy Ontiveros, 32, pulled over Dennis Armenta, 58, for a traffic violation. Armenta refused to roll down his window or provide identification to Ontiveros, Bloomfield Police Department Chief Phillip Francisco said. After over eight minutes of negotiation, Armenta continued to refuse to comply. Officers decided to arrest him for concealing his identity, Francisco said. Armenta was inside his locked car with the windows up, prompting officers to break a window to take him into custody. At that point, Armenta opened fire with a handgun, "hitting Ontiveros and narrowly missing a second officer at the scene," Francisco said. Ontiveros was taken to multiple hospitals before dying in Albuquerque Sunday, he said Sunday. "Officer Ontiveros was a valued member of the Bloomfield Police Department," Francisco said. "In his short time with the agency, he demonstrated kindness, professionalism, and dedication to the safety of the community he served. Ontiveros had been with the Bloomfield Police Department since December. He was also a volunteer firefighter with the Aztec Fire Department. He previously worked for Farmington police. "We are grieving his loss and ask for your prayers and support for the family of Officer Ontiveros and the Bloomfield Police Department as we navigate this tremendous loss," Francisco said. A GoFundMe page was set up to support Ontiveros' family. On the page, family friend Heather Eckhoff described Ontiveros as having a "heart of gold" who loved serving and protecting his community. "I extend my deepest condolences to Officer Ontiveros's family, friends, and fellow officers," Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said in a statement. "Today, all New Mexicans honor his life, his service, and the sacrifice he made to keep others safe." Funeral arrangements have not been set, Francisco said.

U.S. Marshals release age progression photos of man who escaped from Ohio prison over 50 years ago
The U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) is still looking for a man who escaped from an Ohio prison over 50 years ago, according to a spokesperson with the USMS Northern District of Ohio. [DOWNLOAD: Free WHIO-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] Lester Eubanks, 81, escaped from the Ohio State Penitentiary in 1973 while serving a life sentence for the death of 14-year-old Mary Ellen Deener. The USMS worked with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) to release age progression photos of Eubanks. The spokesperson said the original image was completed in August 2019, but the USMS Cold Case Unit and NCMEC have been updating it since then. Eubanks killed Deener on Nov. 14, 1965, while she was walking to the laundromat. The spokesperson said Eubanks was out on bond at the time for an attempted rape. A jury found Eubanks guilty of murder while perpetrating rape on May 25, 1966. He was sentenced to death for his crimes two days later. Eubanks' sentence was commuted to life in prison while he was serving his time at the Ohio State Penitentiary in 1972. Less than two years after the sentence modification, Eubanks was placed in the Ohio Corrections Medical Center and given an 'honor assignment,' which allowed him outside of the prison walls. Eubanks escaped prison while on assignment on Dec. 7, 1973, and hasn't been seen since, the spokesperson said. The case was turned over to the USMS Cold Case Unit in northern Ohio in 2016. 'Since then, the USMS has followed up on hundreds of leads and conducted dozens of interviews not only throughout the country, but internationally as well,' the spokesperson said. Eubanks was officially listed as a USMS 15 Most Wanted Fugitive 45 years after his escape on Dec. 7, 2018. There is a reward of up to $50,000 available for information leading to his location. The spokesperson said Eubanks was last seen in southern California in the late 1970s and was using the alias 'Victor Young.' Person hurt after crashing into utility pole in Keystone Heights, FHP says
A person was hurt Sunday morning in a single-car crash in Keystone Heights, the Florida Highway Patrol said. FHP responded to 191 South Lawrence Boulevard, where troopers said a person crashed a vehicle into a utility pole. The crash was believed to possibly be the result of a medical issue, FHP said. The person had moderate, non-life-threatening injuries, and they were taken to UF Health Gainesville.
