A tarp covers red paint on Canada's National Holocaust Monument in Ottawa on Monday. (Dave Charbonneau/CTV News Ottawa) Crews are cleaning up Canada's National Holocaust Monument in Ottawa on Monday, after it was defaced with red paint. The paint was discovered on the monument along the Kichi Zibi Mikan Monday morning. A photo sent to CTV News Ottawa showed the words 'Feed Me' painted on the monument. When CTV News Ottawa cameras arrived at the monument shortly after 9 a.m., tarps covered some of the graffiti and crews were cleaning the monument. Three red paint cans remained at the monument. 'A disgusting and cowardly act — Canada's National Holocaust Monument was defaced overnight,' Melissa Lantsman, Conservative MP and Deputy Leader, said on X. 'Parliament is just steps away — that's where dissent belongs. Defacing sacred ground in honour of the millions of victims of the Holocaust in the middle of the night with spray paint isn't protest, it's vandalism. According to the National Holocaust Monument website, the monument in Ottawa commemorates the six million Jewish men, women and children murdered during the Holocaust, and the millions of other victims of Nazi Germany and its collaborators. The monument was inaugurated by former prime minister Justin Trudeau in September 2017.

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney is pledging that Canada will achieve NATO's two per cent target this year — five years ahead of his prior commitment which promised to meet the mark by 2030 . Carney, who is set to attend the NATO Summit later this month, made the announcement in a speech at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy in Toronto on Monday. He said Canada's strategy is focused on four pillars: investing in the men and women who serve, expanding and enhancing military capabilities, strengthening the government's relationship with the defence industry and diversifying Canada's defence partnerships. He also committed to a larger and sustained Canadian Armed Forces presence in Canada's north, year-round. He said the government will expand the reach and security mandate of the Canadian Coast Guard and integrate those investments into Canada's defence capabilities.
