Street slaughter banned in Cairo, fines up to LE10,000 for violators
Cairo Governor Ibrahim Saber announced on Monday that environmental citations will be issued to individuals who slaughter sacrificial animals in the street and leave behind waste and blood. The fine amount will vary based on the extent of the violation, he said, potentially reaching up to LE 10,000. The governor also emphasized stricter oversight to ensure no slaughtering occurs outside designated abattoirs. This measure aims to protect the environment, public health, and general cleanliness, as well as to ensure meat safety. All government abattoirs in Cairo will be open throughout the Eid holidays to offer free slaughtering services to citizens. These complimentary services include pre-slaughter animal inspection, meat inspection, temporary holdings until slaughter and preparation are complete, and designated parking areas. Furthermore, Saber prohibited setting up any makeshift stalls for displaying live animals on public roads, whether by citizens or butcher shops, to prevent traffic obstruction. He urged the importance of promptly and decisively addressing violators and taking necessary legal action. He confirmed that all abattoirs under the directorate will operate 24 hours a day during the Eid period. The Governor also directed the Cairo Cleaning, Beautification, and Illumination Authority to immediately remove slaughter waste from the streets to safeguard the environment and public health, and issue the necessary environmental pollution reports.

Health Ministry Eliminates Medical Paper Records
The announcement was made at a ceremony recognising Egypt as the first in the region to meet WHO's hepatitis B control target. Jun 04, 2025 The Ministry of Health and Population has announced the complete elimination of paper records across all health offices, marking a step in Egypt's healthcare digital transformation. Deputy Minister Dr. Amr Qandil confirmed that a unified digital system has been rolled out across health and vaccination offices nationwide, in order to improve service delivery and administrative efficiency. As part of the new system, parents receive automated SMS reminders 48 hours before scheduled vaccination appointments. The ministry currently operates around 5,300 vaccination points across the country, administering approximately 65 million doses annually. These include vaccinations for newborns, schoolchildren, healthcare workers, high-risk groups such as dialysis patients, and refugees. The announcement was made during a ceremony celebrating Egypt's achievement in hepatitis B control, where the country was recognised as the first in the Eastern Mediterranean region to meet the World Health Organization's target of reducing prevalence below 1% among children aged five and older. This digital shift is part of the broader national strategy to integrate technology into public health infrastructure and expand access to comprehensive healthcare services.

Egypt increases health budget to LE 496 Billion in 2024/2025
CAIRO – 2 June 2025: The Information and Decision Support Center (IDSC) under the Egyptian Cabinet has revealed that Egypt has firmly established a robust pharmaceutical manufacturing base in recent years, significantly boosting both technical capabilities and production output. As a result, the country has achieved an impressive 91 percent self-sufficiency in medicine. Today, Egypt is home to more than 179 pharmaceutical factories, including 11 internationally accredited facilities, along with 150 factories for medical supplies, 5 for raw material production, and 4 specialized in biological products. Altogether, the nation operates over 986 pharmaceutical production lines, marking a major leap in local healthcare manufacturing. In a parallel effort to reinforce the healthcare system, the Egyptian government has increased the national health budget by 24.9 percent for the 2024/2025 fiscal year, raising the allocation to approximately LE 496 billion, up from LE 397 billion in 2023/2024. This increase meets the constitutional obligation for healthcare funding in the new state budget. Moreover, the government affirmed its continued commitment to the state-funded medical treatment program, with no interruptions planned. The budget allocated to this program has been raised by 16.1 percent, reaching LE 10.1 billion in 2024/2025, compared to LE 8.7 billion in the previous fiscal year. These developments reflect Egypt's strategic focus on health sovereignty and public wellbeing.
