Chidambaram Dikshitars call Brahmotsavam protest contempt of court

CUDDALORE: The Podhu Dikshitars of the Chidambaram Nataraja Temple have stated that the proposed immolation protest announced by Deiviga Peravai founder Gemini M N Radhakrishnan, demanding the conduct of Brahmotsavam for the Thillai Govindaraja Perumal Temple, amounts to contempt of court and is illegal.
Radhakrishnan had announced that he would stage an immolation protest on May 28 seeking permission to conduct the Brahmotsavam festival at the Govindaraja Perumal Temple, which is situated within the premises of the Chidambaram Nataraja Temple.
In response, the secretary of the Nataraja Temple's general Dikshitars' committee, T Sivasundara Dikshitar, submitted a complaint to Chidambaram Deputy Superintendent of Police T Augustin Joshua Lamech.
The complaint stated, "For the past three years, an individual named Radhakrishnan has continuously made false complaints and public allegations that tarnish the reputation of the general Dikshitars. He has interfered with the administration of the Dikshitars and the peaceful darshan of devotees. He has also filed unnecessary legal cases and made misleading public statements, opposing traditional pooja and darshan practices."

Tantransco flags issue of outage of NLC units, affecting load balance

Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation Limited (Tantransco) has flagged the issue of outage of NLC generation units, resulting in shortage of the State's power allocation from Central generating stations (CGS). Tamil Nadu is losing a share of 745 MW out of the 1,999 MW due to forced outages in May, Tantransco Chairman J Radhakrishnan said in a recent letter addressed to NLC India Ltd Chairman and Managing Director. 'In the recent past years, NLC complex units are maintaining less generation citing various reasons due to which Tamil Nadu is getting less schedule against the allocated share there by facing much hardships in maintaining its 'Load-generation' balance, ', he said. Tamil Nadu State Load Despatch Centre is facing much hardship to maintain load-generation balance especially during non-solar peak hours, Mr. Radhakrishnan said. He called for necessary immediate measures in long term perspective to rectify the outage and maintain full generation from NLC Complex units during the current summer period especially during non-solar peak hours. Tantransco has also pointed out that there was a schedule shortfall of 219 MW from the available running units during the lighting peak hours on May 12, resulting in total affected share of 964 MW out of 1,999 MW. Tamil Nadu grid faces 5 peaks namely morning peak, solar peak, evening peak, lighting peak and Air-Conditioned (AC) night peak. Presently, the solar peak and evening peak is being met through renewable energy sources, namely solar and wind in addition to other generators, as per the State Energy Department's policy note for 2025-2026. Shortage of resources is faced during the morning peak, lighting peak and AC peak especially during the months of February, March, April and May. After meeting the demand with available sources viz., Thermal, Hydro, Central Generating Stations (CGS) share, Long Term Open Access (LTOA), Medium Term Open Access (MTOA) and Renewable Energy sources, the shortage in demand is met through short term tie ups such as Day Ahead Market (DAM), Day Ahead Contingency (DAC) Market, Long Duration contract (LDC) and Real Time Market (RTM), it added. Challenges faced in grid management are thermal outages, CGS share outages among others, the policy note pointed out. Tamil Nadu reached an all-time high peak power demand of 20,830 MW on May 2, 2024, and the record high daily consumption of 454.32 million units on April 30, 2024. Last month, Electricity Minister S.S. Sivasankar had said Tamil Nadu's power demand so far in the current summer has been lower than last year, due to rains in parts of the State. India's energy consumption stood at 148.7 billion units in May 2025, marking a 4% decline compared to the previous year. Unseasonal rains and the early onset of the monsoon kept temperatures lower than usual, leading to reduced electricity demand, as per Indian Energy Exchange.

Plea to conduct 10-day Brahmotsavam festival at Ramanathaswamy Temple

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday directed the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department to file a counter affidavit to a public interest litigation petition that sought a direction to authorities to conduct the Brahmotsavam festival at Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameswaram for 10 days instead of three days. A Division Bench of Justices S.M. Subramaniam and A.D. Maria Clete was hearing the petition filed by an advocate Elephant Rajendran of Chennai. The petitioner said that Brahmotsavam festival is conducted in all temples in the State. However, it was not conducted for 10 years in Ramanathaswamy temple in Rameswaram. The Brahmotsavam festival is conducted for 10 days. However, this year it is going to be held for only three days. The modification of the ancient temple practice is hurting the religious sentiments of the devotees, he said. The Brahmotsavam festival should be conducted for 10 days instead of three days. The petition was filed seeking relief in ensuring the age-old traditions of the temple were not tampered with, he said. He said that to curtail the 10-day festival to three days was arbitrary. The authorities cannot interfere with religious affairs. He sought a direction to authorities to extend the festival by seven more days and conduct a 10-day festival at the temple. During the course of the hearing, the temple authorities submitted that the Brahmotsavam festival had already commenced on June 3 and the authorities will take a decision with regard to conducting the festival for the coming years. The court posted the matter for hearing after two weeks.

Mails from Indians on immigration akin to spam: New Zealand minister sparks row

New Zealand's Immigration Minister. Eric Stanford, sparked an outrage after she revealed how she received heaps of emails from Indians seeking immigration advice. She also stated that she never responded to these emails. She received criticism for the insensitivity of her comments. An Indian-origin Labour MP, Priyanca Radhakrishnan, criticised Stanford for singling out an ethnic group and said it was careless at best and prejudiced at defending her use of her personal Gmail account for official correspondence during a session on May 6, Stanford said, "I receive a lot of unsolicited emails like, for example, things from people in India asking for immigration advice, which I never respond to. I almost regard those as being akin to spam."Defending her actions, she explained that she complied with the Official Information Act and made sure all relevant material was documented and sent to her parliamentary email. The parliamentary question posed to Stanford was not in connection with came up just a day after Stanford revealed she had utilised her personal email account for official purposes, including sending herself advance copies of budget announcements for MP RADHAKRISHNAN CALLS OUT REMARKLabour MP of Indian origin, Priyanca Radhakrishnan, criticised to The Indian Weekender, Radhakrishnan said, "Such comments reinforce negative stereotypes about an entire community." She also called it unacceptable for a minister to single out a specific ethnic a Chennai-born minister, expressed her outrage over the incident on Facebook, sharing her strong reaction to the statement."Earlier this week, in response to a question, the Immigration Minister felt the need to single out people from one country/ethnicity in a negative light. If you're from India, don't bother emailing her because it's automatically considered spam. So much for the National Government's all-of-government focus on strengthening the relationship between India & NZ and focus on people-to-people links," Radhakrishnan rejected Radhakrishnan's allegations, saying she did not say they were spam. "I said I almost regard those as being akin to spam.""While these people are attempting to contact me as the Minister of Immigration, I have no ministerial responsibility for providing non-citizens with immigration advice, nor do my officials at Immigration NZ have any responsibility," Radio New Zealand (RNZ) quoted her as saying.
