Google Messages rival is back from the dead and getting even better

Samsung couldn't bring itself to kill its Messages app apparently and a slew of new features are rumored to breathe new life into it.
The South Korean giant's interest in Samsung Messages had been waning since 2021, which is when it started showing preference for Google Messages. The company removed the app from the Play Store earlier this year, which coincided with its announcement that the app was being phased out. Verizon also briefly removed RCS support for the app, before reinstating it. The app remained available to download on Samsung's Galaxy Store and the company continued deploying new features to it. Considering Samsung had said those who already had the app on their phone would be able to continue using it, the addition of a new features didn't seem all that surprising, even though apps that are on the brink of retirement are usually neglected by developers.
Samsung Messages is set to get even better with One UI 8, which hints that it's not going anywhere. When analyzing the version of the app that will ship with One UI 8, Android Authority found that the app will gain many of the features that are already found on Google Messages and WhatsApp. The first feature is Birthday Reminders, which, as the name suggests, will ping you on a saved contact's birthday to prompt you to send them a greeting.Samsung Messages may also let you share your live location with others, but only if you have a Samsung account, as the feature will not work without the Samsung Find app. You will be able to turn down a live location sharing invitation, stop sharing your live location, share your live location indefinitely, and be notified when someone declines to view your live location.Another feature that will be copied from Google Messages is emoji and sticker reactions. This will allow you to respond to messages with custom stickers.Lastly, the Now Brief feature, which provides personalized information to users, will inform users about phony messages that were blocked.
If Samsung was going to follow through on its announcement to phase out its Messages app, it surely wouldn't dedicate time and resources to the creation of new features for it.

Apple and Samsung dominate Q1 best-selling smartphones list in Europe

Much like the global Q1 smartphone shipment rankings, Apple and Samsung led the way in Europe. The two OEMs shared five devices each with Apple occupying the top three spots with its iPhone 16 series according to Counterpoint Research's latest report. The iPhone 16 Pro was the best-selling device in the region, earning 6% of all smartphone sales for the period. It was closely followed by the 16 Pro Max and vanilla iPhone 16, which held 5% each. Samsung's Galaxy S25 Ultra and Galaxy S25 came in fourth and fifth place with a 3% share, followed by last year's Galaxy S24 and its 2% share. Two more Samsung phones slotted after that, with the Galaxy A55 and A16 5G both garnering 2% of total sales for the period. The big newcomer in the list is the iPhone 16e, which entered the top ten in its first full month of market availability following its announcement in late February. Counterpoint points out that initial sales for the 16e are actually behind the iPhone SE (2020) and SE (2022) models which shouldn't come as a surprise given the 16e's higher starting price in Europe at €699 vs €519 for the SE (2022) and €479 for the SE (2020). Apple is also still offering last year's iPhone 15, which was the tenth best-selling phone for the Q1 period. Apple iPhone 16 Pro Source

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Z Fold 7 could hold the line on pricing this year — with one exception

Referential image of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 . | Image credit — PhoneArena A new rumor suggests that Samsung's upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 could arrive without a price increase in most regions. If this holds true, it would be a surprising move in a year where inflation, tariffs, and rising component costs have pushed other manufacturers toward higher price to a new report, the tip comes from a leaker who claims that both foldables will retain the same pricing as their 2024 predecessors. That would place the Z Flip 7 at around $999 and the Z Fold 7 at $1799 in the United States — assuming the U.S. is counted among the regions where pricing stays put. However, the report does note that there will be exceptions. It's unclear exactly which countries will see different pricing, but this is especially relevant to U.S. buyers, where the ongoing situation with tariffs could play a major role. With talks of changing trade policies and component sourcing, Samsung's strategy might shift depending on how things develop by the time of launch. A new leak claims only a few countries will receive a price increase on the Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip 7 devices. | Image credit — PandaFlash on X We've already covered some of what to expect from Samsung's next foldables, including official confirmation that the Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 will run One UI 8 out of the box, based on Android 14. That detail alone points to Samsung aligning its foldables with the rest of its AI-focused Galaxy ecosystem. There are also rumors that the Z Flip 7 might feature the Exynos 2500 chipset in select markets, which would mark a shift from the Snapdragon-only approach used in previous Flip models. Meanwhile, the Z Fold 7 is expected to continue relying on Qualcomm's flagship Snapdragon processor across the board. In terms of design, don't expect a major overhaul. Leaks so far indicate that Samsung is sticking close to the look and feel of the Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6, with the major difference being the inclusion of a full external display on the Z Flip 7 . Other than that, we can expect refinements, such as a focus on better battery efficiency, enhanced cameras, and deeper integration of Galaxy AI features. Samsung usually unveils its foldables in late July or early August, so we likely won't have to wait long to see if this rumored pricing holds up. Until then, prospective buyers can be cautiously optimistic. Just keep in mind that depending on where you live, the final price could still vary.
