Chicago museum director stripped mid-air after booze and pills, but still has his million-dollar role
The Art Institute of Chicago's director, James Rondeau, is set to return to his position Monday after being temporarily sidelined due to a bizarre and embarrassing incident on an international flight that saw him reportedly strip naked mid-air.
Rondeau, who earns more than $1 million annually as the museum's highest-paid employee, was detained by German authorities on April 18 upon landing in Munich. According to reports, he became intoxicated after consuming alcohol and prescription medication, eventually disrobing in-flight aboard a United Airlines flight from Chicago.
The 55-year-old museum chief was taken into custody by German police after the plane touched down, sparking an internal crisis at one of the nation's most respected art institutions.
Rondeau later took a voluntary leave of absence while the museum launched an independent investigation into the incident.
'I deeply regret this incident'
In a statement released through CBS News, Rondeau expressed remorse for the ordeal, "I deeply regret this incident and the impact it has had on the museum and me and on my colleagues. I have dedicated the past 27 years of my professional career to the Art Institute and I am grateful to have the opportunity to continue furthering its mission."
Despite the public embarrassment, the Art Institute has decided to reinstate Rondeau, citing confidence in his leadership.
Museum backs director's return
"Board leadership of the Art Institute of Chicago has conducted an independent investigation of this incident and is confident in James Rondeau's leadership and ability to continue as the president and director of the museum," a museum spokesperson told CBS News.
Rondeau has been with the Art Institute since 1998, when he began as an associate curator. He was appointed president and director in 2016, overseeing the museum's vast collection of more than 300,000 artworks.

Portugal police announce new search in Madeleine McCann disappearance case
AP file photo LISBON: Portuguese police will carry out a new search this week in the municipality of Lagos at the request of German authorities investigating the 2007 disappearance of three-year-old Madeleine McCann, a spokesperson told AFP Monday. The toddler was never found after going missing from the resort in Praia da Luz where she was with her family, one of the most high-profile missing person cases in history. Police said it will carry out "a wide range of actions" between Tuesday and Friday near the southern Portugal seaside resort where the girl disappeared on May 3, 2007. The move is part of a warrant issued by the Brunswick Public Prosecutor's Office, in northern Germany, which is conducting a preliminary investigation into Christian Bruckner, suspected by German authorities of killing McCann, the Portuguese police spokesperson said, confirming information from British and Portuguese media. "All the evidence seized by police will, with prior authorisation from the national public prosecutor's office, be handed over to agents of the German federal criminal police," the spokesperson added. The last search occurred in May 2023, near a lake. "As part of the investigation into the Madeleine McCann case, criminal proceedings are currently underway in Portugal," a spokesman for the Brunswick public prosecutor's office, Christian Wolters, told AFP. "We are aware of the searches conducted by the BKA (the German federal police) in Portugal as part of their investigation into Madeleine McCann's disappearance. The (British) police services are not on-site but we will assist our international colleagues wherever needed," a British police spokesman told AFP. Bruckner, currently serving a prison sentence for rape, was acquitted in October 2024 in Germany in a trial for two sexual assaults and three rapes committed between 2000 and 2017 in Portugal.

Kyiv claims 'Operation Spider's Web' in which it destroyed 40 Russian bombers took a year and half to execute
Kyiv, June 2 (UNI) Ukraine launched a "large-scale" drone attack deep into Russian territory that security officials claim destroyed 40 military bombers, even as Kyiv gears up for another round of talks in Istanbul to explore prospects of a ceasefire. Ukrainian security sources told CBS News that the attack — called "Operation Spider's Web" — took over a year and a half to execute and was personally supervised by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. In his evening address, Zelenskyy said that 117 drones had been used in the operation. He claimed the operation had been headquartered out of an office next to the local FSB headquarters. The FSB is the Russian intelligence and security service. Security Service of Ukraine smuggled drones inside the roofs of mobile wooden cabins carried by trucks deep into Russian territory, the Ukrainian security sources said. At the time of the attack, the roofs were remotely opened, allowing the drones to take off. The drones hit airfields including the Belaya air base in Russia's Irkutsk region, more than 2,500 miles from Ukraine. It is the first time that a Ukrainian drone has been seen in the region. The Security Service of Ukraine said that the operation had destroyed 34% of Russia's fleet of air missile carriers with damages estimated at $7 billion. The claim could not be independently verified. While White House spokespeople declined to comment on the attack, administration sources told CBS News on Sunday that the White House was not aware it was coming. The drone attack came as Kyiv announced a Russian military strike killed at least 12 soldiers at an army training site.
