Access to Care Could Have Saved My Son's Life. Other Vets Should Have a Chance.

My son was the best person I ever knew. Kind, loving and generous, Logan never met someone who wasn't a friend. Just like his father, Logan wanted to join the military. He had a strong sense of duty and wanted to help people.
But I hardly recognized Logan when he came back from service. He struggled with his mental health throughout his time in the Navy, eventually receiving an honorable discharge. He came home reserved, withdrawn, anxious and, unbeknownst to me, had attempted suicide multiple times.
At the time, I worked at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Fayetteville, North Carolina, as a pharmacy technician. I knew the VA existed for the very purpose of helping men and women like my son, especially those with disability ratings and mental-health struggles due to their service.
I encouraged Logan to seek help, and finally, after years, he agreed to come to the VA and ask for a mental-health appointment.
Under the current VA MISSION Act law, the VA has standards in place for how to handle scheduling appointments for mental-health care. They look for an open appointment at the facility, and if they can't get the veteran in to be seen within 20 days, they refer them to outside doctors in the community. The Community Care Program, as it's titled, allows a veteran such as my son to use his VA benefits to see non-VA doctors.
Long wait times aren't always an option for mental-health care, so the Community Care Program is often a lifeline veterans can hold onto.
Logan told me he was given an appointment, though he didn't tell me when. I was just grateful to the VA and hopeful for his future. But that hope was short-lived.
The wait time for his mental-health appointment was five months long. That should have made him eligible for community care, but to my knowledge, nobody from the VA ever contacted Logan about coordinating that care.
Two months into waiting for an appointment, Logan took his own life. My only child died waiting for help from the VA that wasn't coming.
I believe the VA stands in the way of veterans getting access to community care. It's become a tangled bureaucracy that is focused on itself rather than helping the veteran. That was clear to me in how my son was treated, and then how I was treated after his death. I was held at arm's length, given little information as a next of kin and treated with such coldness that I chose to leave VA employment last year through early retirement.
If there is something I can cling to for purpose now, it's that I won't let another mother feel this pain if I can do something about it. My child is gone, but I'll ensure he can still help others, just like he did in his 27 years of life.
It starts with giving veterans access to desperately needed care.
Even though the Community Care Program is built with standards for veterans to use their benefits to get care outside the VA when wait times are too long, VA administrators have found ways around the law. Veterans are often stuck in the maze of trying to advocate for themselves to get community care, if they even know they have that option.
As I've gone through the process of sharing Logan's story, I've been encouraged by members of Congress and organizations such as Concerned Veterans for America who want to make things right for veterans at the VA.
In particular, the Veterans' ACCESS Act would make it law that the VA has clear standards for veterans using community care and that the VA communicates those standards with veterans. Two more pieces of this bill, though, are more critical to me. First, the VA would need to create a portal so veterans can self-schedule at the VA or a community care provider. Second, the bill would create a pilot program for veterans that need certain kinds of mental-health-care access to get community care without VA pre-approval first.
No need to get a referral from the VA; just go get the help you need.
This kind of access could have saved my child's life. It could still save another mother's child.
I beg Congress, if you care about veterans, their mental-health struggles and the families who support them, to pass the Veterans' ACCESS Act. Our children's lives depend on it.

Nunavik's tuberculosis outbreaks are a result of decades of colonial neglect, professor says
Nunavik is on track to set another record number of tuberculosis cases, which one scholar says is unacceptable in this day and age. There have been 56 cases so far this year of tuberculosis reported in the region, according to Quebec's health department. On Monday, the region's 14 mayors released a letter, calling on the Quebec government to declare a public health emergency over the rates of tuberculosis. The Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services has said the incidence of tuberculosis in the region is 1,000 times higher than among non-Indigenous people born in Canada. Health Minister Christian Dubé told CBC News he "will continue to follow the recommendations of public health experts on the subject," though he stopped short of committing to a declaration. Natasha MacDonald, a McGill University professor from Kuujjuaraapik who researches culturally responsive care for tuberculosis in Nunavik, said she doesn't believe Quebec is treating the tuberculosis situation in Nunavik with the same urgency as elsewhere in the province. This interview has been edited for length and clarity. What do you make of this call from the mayors to declare a public health emergency over the tuberculosis situation? It's unfortunate that we are in a time and place where we have to make such calls to action. Under a number of international, national and provincial jurisdictions, including the Viens Commission, the Quebec government has a responsibility to ensure that health care in our communities is adequate and is on par with those of non-Indigenous populations. Because of the urgent situation that Nunavik is in right now, the mayors have had no choice but to unite together as one voice to demand that the government do its job. Why do you think we're seeing this upward trajectory in cases of tuberculosis, in 2025? What's unbelievable is that we are a first world nation in Canada, and we have a third world disease within Canada. It exists in Nunavik in our Inuit communities, and it's the same strain that has been in Nunavik since 1928. Quebec made efforts with the City of Montreal, not that long ago, to stop the spread of tuberculosis. Cases were found, contact tracing was done, people were isolated and medicated. In Nunavik, it has been left to grow and we have outbreaks in six of our 14 communities. This is unacceptable, and it should not happen. We are part of Quebec, we are part of Canada. You've alluded to the damage that tuberculosis has wreaked on families historically, with Inuit being sent south for care. Given that history, what do you believe we, as a society, still don't understand treating tuberculosis in Nunavik? What's happening in Nunavik is a result of decades of systemic colonial neglect. Inuit are expected to adapt to those systems, rather than the government adapting those systems to meet the needs of Inuit. The way the regional health board has been implanted by the provincial government makes it a very program-centred health-care system and not a person-centred health-care program. One of the infectious disease nurses said at one point, in all of Nunavik, they ran out of sputum testing kits. So she had to beg and plead from the province of Manitoba to send over 40,000 sputum testing kits. Quebec didn't have any and it wouldn't procure more. There aren't even X-rays in most of our communities, much less X-ray technicians in those communities. And Inuit feel uncomfortable going to the clinic or hospital because of decades of mistrust in medical care and the systemic and individual racism that exists. One of the calls to action in the mayors' letter is about Inuit health sovereignty. What does that look like? For things to change in our communities, Inuit need to be the ones who determine how our programs and systems run, so that they are tailored to the way we think and work. Inuit are being expected to move around the calendars and schedules of health-care workers, and they are workers are told they should not be going house to house for testing. If it were Inuit leading our organizations, we would have a better understanding on how to do more screening. It's not somebody from Quebec City who should be dictating how much money should be going toward basic equipment, We should be. We're the ones in our communities. We're the ones that know that the X-ray machine is broken in this one town, or that we have a new graduate who's just finished their radiography course who could be hired into a position within their community. What we are talking about here is structural change. Can you compare what the system looks like now with Nunavik's health organizations, to that ideal vision you've just talked about? Systemic change would come when Inuit are able to create a new system altogether, through self-determination or self-government. Or if we can appropriate the system and have an Inuk lead who can hire resources, because we know best on how to allocate our resources and where the needs are. The midwifery program in Nunavik is a perfect example of that. This is a system where Inuit have designed how our mothers want to give birth in a community with support, in an Inuit way, and it is unbelievably successful. This is not rocket science. We also understand that translators are as key as any doctor or nurse. Right now, you have French-speaking nurses and doctors that come into our community, and English is often the lingua franca because most Inuit in Nunavik still speak Inuktitut. When you're translating, for example, with a term like tuberculosis, you have to be very careful to make the difference between tuberculosis, which is a disease that can kill you, and something like bronchitis. You can't just say it's a lung problem. I understand that we have to collaborate with the Ministry of Health in Quebec, but at the same time, they have to understand we are not just another region within Quebec. We are distinct and we have needs that have not been met for decades. It's also an example of systemic racism because Inuit in Nunavik have been ignored, have been left behind, have been left to die for decades, and this is unacceptable. It was unacceptable after the first TB case. It was unacceptable after the first death. It's unacceptable now when our numbers are record high. We have nurses who are burnt out. And if this were anywhere else in Quebec, there would be an outcry and the government would be immediately addressing this, so we are expecting the same.

Anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles shutter downtown VA medical center services
Approximately 220,000 veterans reside in Los Angeles County, and inside the downtown area of Los Angeles is a crucial outpatient VA medical center. As part of the Greater Los Angeles VA Healthcare System, this clinic plays a central role in serving veterans in the DTLA area, offering a variety of on-site preventative and interventional services. Mental health care is a significant focus of the downtown VA medical center in Los Angeles. Veterans facing ongoing issues related to their service – problems like post-traumatic stress, depression, anxiety, or substance abuse challenges – have access to same-day appointments, counseling, and group therapy. With nearly 3,000 veterans in LA County experiencing homelessness, mental health support isn't just helpful, it's essential. The clinic offers a comprehensive range of support and services tailored to meet the everyday health needs of veterans who visit its doors, including primary care, laboratory work, management of chronic conditions, and coordinated referrals to specialists. Female veterans also receive dedicated, thoughtful care. From OB-GYN services and maternity support to trauma-informed counseling and preventive screenings, the clinic acknowledges and addresses the unique needs of women who have served but whose needs are too often overlooked in more traditional healthcare settings. Specialty services, including dermatology, audiology, oral surgery, and nutrition counseling, are also offered, making it easier for veterans to access comprehensive care in one place. This location also offers amenities such as wheelchair accessibility, valet parking, and VA-covered transportation to help reduce the barriers that might otherwise prevent a veteran from accessing the facility. This clinic often becomes a stabilizing force for those trying to rebuild their lives, and even during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, its doors remained open to veterans. For the first time, its doors were closed, and veterans were turned away from in-person care. On June 6, 2025, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) began a series of raids to arrest illegal immigrants, who the Department of Homeland Security says have significant criminal histories. What began as peaceful protests against the raids quickly morphed into pockets of violence as demonstrators and law enforcement squared off, prompting the federal agents to seek backup support. As the disturbances continued, the Los Angeles police officers on the scene were also drawn into the melee. Many LAPD vehicles were hit with a barrage of bricks, fireworks, and rocks. It was a scene of riotous violence broadcast live on national television. The protests against ICE erupted into full-scale riots in some areas, with protestors defacing government buildings – like the downtown VA clinic – with graffiti and threats. VA Secretary and Air Force Reserve Col. Doug Collins made the difficult decision to close the clinic for in-person appointments for the entire week due to security concerns for the veterans and on-site staff. He shared the above message and photo of the destruction on X. We Are The Mighty reached out to the VA leader for a statement on the closure. 'California leaders have repeatedly put the interests of illegal immigrants and criminals above those of hard-working citizens and now Los Angeles veterans are paying the price,' Secretary of Veterans Affairs Doug Collins said. 'We are thankful President Trump has the courage to bring order and safety back to the citizens of Los Angeles, something the California leaders have failed to do. The LA Ambulatory Care Center will reopen as soon as it is safe to do so and in the meantime, in-person appointments at the facility are being rescheduled or shifted to telehealth.' President Trump activated and deployed the National Guard on June 7, 2025, to restore order. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth issued the order just a day later, authorizing 700 Marines to provide additional support to law enforcement on the ground. After hundreds of arrests L.A. Mayor Karen Bass instituted a public curfew for the downtown area due to the extensive looting and rioting. That evening, rioters could be seen hurling objects at National Guardsmen protecting the Edward R. Roybal Federal Building. Governor Gavin Newsom also addressed the nation and the protestors themselves, asking them to peacefully go home. As of Wednesday, June 11, 2025, the pockets of violent protesting continued, and the marines deployed to help contain the area continued their training to be ready to support federal law enforcement and guardsmen on the ground. With the closure of the VA clinic in downtown Los Angeles, many veterans were unable to be seen at all and had to be rescheduled for later dates. With significant wait times for primary care or mental health appointments, the rescheduling is more than just an inconvenience for these veterans. It can mean the difference between life and death. As National Guard Arrived in Los Angeles, VA Docs Scrambled to Make Sure Veteran Patients Received Care
As protests in Los Angeles became more widespread and some turned violent over the weekend, leaders of the Veterans Affairs L.A. Ambulatory Care Center made the tough call to close the facility, which serves thousands of patients a week. The center is one of four federal buildings in a block in Los Angeles' Little Tokyo neighborhood, the focus of demonstrations against Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids and the center of ongoing operations by the Los Angeles Police Department and Army National Guard. Not knowing how long the ambulatory care facility would be closed, Veterans Affairs providers scrambled Sunday evening to make sure their patients -- including vulnerable veterans who require daily medication -- could access vital medical care in the coming week. A VA staff member with knowledge of the events told it was an overwhelming response by employees. "When a crisis like this happens, [the center] is able to respond," the employee said. "Most places don't have the resources we have at the VA." VA officials said Tuesday that the center would remain closed at least through Wednesday, with a reassessment of the situation regarding operations through the end of the week. VA Secretary Doug Collins said the facility will reopen "as soon as it is safe to do so, and in the meantime, in-person appointments at the facility are being rescheduled or shifted to telehealth." "California leaders have repeatedly put the interests of illegal immigrants and criminals above those of hard-working citizens, and now Los Angeles Veterans are paying the price. We are thankful President Trump has the courage to bring order and safety back to the citizens of Los Angeles -- something California leaders have failed to do," Collins said in a statement to California Gov. Gavin Newsom and L.A. Mayor Karen Bass both opposed the deployment of military troops to the city, saying local law enforcement was equipped to handle the protests over the Trump administration's increasingly aggressive immigration raids across the country. Over their objection, Trump commandeered the California National Guard, ordering about 4,000 soldiers and 700 Marines to L.A. Newsom filed an emergency motion in court Tuesday to stop Trump from expanding the mission, saying that "sending trained warfighters onto the streets is unprecedented and threatens the very core of our democracy." Meanwhile, the health of veterans with mental health conditions or those prescribed medication for substance use treatment are considered particularly at-risk because their conditions may worsen without treatment or they could suffer debilitating withdrawals or relapse. Patients who abruptly stop taking methadone, for example, may experience nausea, vomiting, pain, agitation and insomnia, according to the National Institutes of Health. VA Press Secretary Peter Kasperowicz said that since Monday, the facility's patients who have needed urgent care are "being supported at nearby facilities," and those who require daily medication were offered "courtesy pick-up and take-home doses" from the West Los Angeles VA. The VA's vocational rehabilitation and employment counselors, who work for the VA's Regional Benefits Office at the site, also have pivoted to provide support via virtual appointments, according to Kasperowicz.
